Join us today for a final #SeaOtterAwarenessWeek otter highlight, with our very own Schuster! Schuster has always been a bit shellfish, managing to take all the live enrichment for himself. The first time we gave live crabs to the otters he took all three for himself, even though he was only a year old and half the size as the other otters at the time. Recently, they were given crabs again. This time they were given four crabs for enrichment and Schuster took three of them while Nuka and Oswald had to share one! Schuster was originally found stranded as a pup with injuries along his side that were consistent with a shark attack. He was rescued by the Monterey Bay Aquarium and rehabilitated; however, he was not able to be released back into the wild. He arrived at the Oregon Coast Aquarium in February 2012. Schuster is often seen enjoying ice treats with toys frozen inside them. Schuster was immediate friends with Oswald and they can be seen playing together in their exhibit. - @oregoncoastaquarium on Instagram

Say hello to Empanada! She joined us on 8th September after being rescued by British Divers Marine Life Rescue medics from West Cornwall after being spotted without her mum on a busy seal haul out. She was incredibly hungry and began approaching other adult seals. After being monitored for 24 hours by Cornwall Research Group Trust volunteers in the hope that her mum would return, and also receiving a few bites from other seals on the beach, the decision was made to lift her to safety. She was given 24 hours of fluids to rehydrate her and is now being weaned onto fish which she loves! She makes a lot of noise when shes hungry to let the team know, she is still well below birth weight but is gaining weight which is fantastic. Because she is so small she is having a bit of trouble regulating her body temperature so you may see her during your visit under her heat lamp having a little snooze. This has been a very difficult year and whilst we are expecting lots of pups this winter, we have suffered severe financial losses making our work even harder. If you are able to support our work it would make such a difference to us. A curious Weddel seal lounges on some sea ice near the top of the Antarctic peninsula. We were lucky on this day, and managed to get our zodiacs in the water and did a few sea ice landings where we were able to walk out on to some free-floating bits of ice, bound for who knows where. The seals were very curious about what we were up to, and some came right over to us, crossing two bits of ice and scrambled up to meet us, coming incredibly close. Not this one though. This one barely cared enough to spare us a glance as our zodiac motors interrupted his nap on the way past - but he was cute. Here’s an otterly awesome story for Sea Otter Awareness Week! In 2017 our Wildlife Response team rescued a sea otter not once but twice, the first time with a hook stuck in his flipper and a second time with a hook stuck in his mouth. He was successfully treated and released back to the ocean with flipper tags so if he was ever spotted again he could be identified. Just this past week he was seen swimming in the bay here in Seward! From the looks of this photo he is staying healthy and hook free! Ela ocorre apenas no Brasil, Uruguai e Argentina. Sua característica mais marcante é seu rostro extremamente comprido e fino, com uma testa bulbosa. . A toninha é um dos menores cetáceos, podendo atingir até 1,70m, costuma viver em pequenos grupos de dois a cinco animais e tem um comportamento muito discreto, o que a torna muito difícil de ser avistada no ambiente marinho. Ela ocorre em regiões costeiras e se alimenta de peixes, cefalópodes e crustáceos. . A espécie possui longevidade baixa, comparada com outros mamíferos marinhos como as baleias-azuis (Balaenoptera musculus) que vivem até 80 anos ou os golfinhos-nariz-de-garrafa (Tursiops truncatus) que podem viver até 50 anos. . No ambiente marinho, seus predadores naturais podem ser as orcas e tubarões. O hábito essencialmente costeiro da toninha torna a espécie altamente vulnerável a atividades humanas, como tráfego de embarcações, poluição e principalmente capturas acidentais nas operações de pesca (bycatch), mesmo não sendo alvo de pescaria acabam sendo capturadas sem intenção. . As capturas acidentais são as principais causa de morte da espécie e a toninha é o golfinho mais ameaçado do Atlântico sudoeste. A mortalidade em redes de pesca costeiras é registrada há mais de meio século, principalmente de emalhe, no Brasil, Uruguai e Argentina. . Estudos mostram que em toda sua distribuição morrem em média 2000 toninhas por ano em redes de pesca. E se a mortalidade continuar nestes valores alarmantes os estoques de toninha podem colapsar. Em algumas regiões ao Sul de sua distribuição esse colapso pode acontecer em menos de 30 anos. FWC biologists, law enforcement and partners recently rescued a manatee entangled in fishing line in Key Largo. The 10 foot, 1100-pound female had monofilament fishing line entangled around both of her flippers. Biologists were able to successfully remove the line from the left flipper in the field, but the animal needed surgery to remove the deeply embedded line in the right flipper, so the manatee was transferred to SeaWorld Orlando. Upon recovery the manatee will be released back into the waters surrounding Key Largo. Please do your part to prevent entanglements, carry a container with a lid to store trash or used fishing line (e.g., tennis ball canister or coffee can) and recycle all monofilament fishing line into a monofilament recycling bin. Team Update 🍂 As we slowly but steadily march into Autumn, were getting into the rhythm of the new normal. 🍂 This week our Rangers are working across Higher Moors SSSI, with a focus on Fen Restoration. This is hugely important work which results in keeping our wetlands wet and protecting/enhancing our precious water supply. As well as managing succession (effectively preventing the movement from Wetland to Woodland) the work also enhances and encourages biodiversity and creates a healthier more robust water catchment area; benefitting nature but people too. 🍂 Following on from this well also be restarting our Seal Surveys after a break of a few months as a result of Covid. The Team are really excited to be getting out on the water again to see how our Atlantic Grey Seals are doing. What a difference 24 hours makes! 💙 Meet #316, a weanling harbor seal rescued from Kennebunkport and admitted to our critical care facility last night. She is extremely underweight for her age, weighing just 25 pounds. For reference, a healthy harbor seal pup weighs about 25 pounds at birth. 😯 Not only is she malnourished, but she also has several small wounds on her body and around her muzzle. This Atlantic Grey Seal female & pup, hidden in a secluded cove on the Cornish Coast. . I spent an amazing time with these two, watching the young pup sucking on her mother’s rich milk, on average the pup puts on up-to 2Kgs a day (4.4Ibs) . At this time of year it’s vitally important to stay at least 100m away where possible, as they are prone to disturbance and the mother may abandon her young, or it could prevent vital feeding to take place. (Keep Dogs under strict control) . These images were taken at considerable distance in cover with a long lens as not to disturb them from their natural behaviour. . The grey seal is the larger of the two UK seal species, and if you catch a good look at them you’ll see how they got their scientific name Halichoerus grypus – it means hook-nosed sea pig! These mammals spend most of their time out at sea feeding on fish. They return to land to rest and can often be seen ‘hauled out’, lying on British beaches. Grey seals give birth to fluffy white pups in the autumn. These adorable pups stay on land until they have lost their white coats and trebled their body weight. . NOAA Fisheries affiliate Vladimir Burkanov discovered an albino fur seal on a recent research trip to the remote island of Tyuleny in the Sea of Okhotsk, Russia. The reddish-gold pup has very light colored eyes and pink flippers. It was born in July 2020. The only information about how rare this sighting is comes from literature published in 1958. At the time, scientist Vic Scheffer reported that the chance of encountering a fur seal with this coloration is 1 in 100,000. Its unclear whether this particular pup will be accepted by the colony and how well it will forage after it is weaned. According to Burkanov, the seal pup looked pretty healthy when he examined it, but animals with albinism typically experience problems with their eyesight. Scientists will look for the animal when they survey the rookery again next June.
