“Thank goodness I walked away, because that’s when I finally began my path of healing and transformation.” I worked within the entertainment industry for about 10 years & during that time I couldn’t imagine doing anything else with my life. Performing allowed me to literally get paid to travel the world & it was all so exciting! I was making friends, great money, & actually living my 8 year old self had always dreamed of. But what happened next was more of a nightmare. One night, while away on a gig, and after one too many drinks, I was sexually assaulted by someone I thought was a friend. After the incident, I was a MESS. I wasn’t performing well. Everything felt heavy and dark. I felt unsafe and disconnected from my own body - riddled with shame, guilt, and anxiety. I had no idea how to take care of myself from here and desperately needed a change. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ I stepped away from my career, and moved home to reflect and heal. By chance, found a local yoga studio offering a teacher training and I saw it as an opportunity to self-soothe & go within myself for healing. Thanks to my combination of yoga, therapy, and break from the spotlight, I began to finally feel like a new version of myself. But she wasn’t new-new. She is the Maria that I sense I’ve been all along, but she was just buried beneath layers of trauma, stress, shame, self-doubt, you-name-it. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Ultimately found a way to heal from within on a level deeper than I thought possible. After everything Ive seen, its become pretty obvious that were no longer living in that first, unspoiled depiction of Eden. Were in that second panel. What Bosch called, Human Kind Before the Flood. And what haunts me the most is that last panel. The one with the charred, blackened skies. A planet that we collectively have left to ruin. The question is, can we change our course in time? For the filming of the #HennessyVerySpecial collaboration, we visited what I consider a dream location: this remote shipwreck located in the furious seas off the Namibian Skeleton Coast, just north of South Africa. Being in a space so remote, surrounded by endless dunes, I could feel the desert’s silence, and the slow movements of the wind and the sand. Nature cares not for our ambitions and desires. September has been the host to the Great British September Clean up. It started on the 11th and ends on the 27th but Id like to think its something we are all doing when we can. Here are some ways you can help; 🚮Join a local beach, park or area clean up if you want to do it in a more organised group. Not entirely sure how that would work now given the rule of 6.... probs not possible 😷 🚮Organise your own in small clean up with some friends. Hey it can be socialising too! 🚮A lot of councils now offer street champion kits so check your local councils website for their litter picking kits. 🚮Go out with your family (kids love it) litter picking around where you live and your local area. Its amazing how much youll pick up even in a short time. 🚮Just pick up litter as and when you come across it, make sure you are wearing gloves and sanitise your hands afterwards of course but every little helps!
