Yesterday, we took found fiber materials and pulled them apart. Today, using those same scraps, put the pieces back together to make a new object! What can you do with the scraps you made? How might they come back together? Tying, knotting, braiding, weaving? What are the different ways you can manipulate this material? Have fun and PLAY! In 2003 the Oaxacan based artist Trini Ellitsgaard exhibited large weavings made from dyed wool and sisal installed in the museum’s Arena, and smaller works in silk and other materials, which were shown in a more intimate exhibition space at the museum. Ellitsgaard has been making hand-loomed textiles close to forty years. Her large carpets and tapestries combine rich colors with bold geometric patterns that result in striking and subtle compositions. My friend @haroshi made this sculpture. It was smashed during the looting of the @hufworldwideskate store in Los Angeles last night. I call Hiroshi my friend, although we have never met. Haroshi lives in Japan and we have only written and shared our art by mail. But we have a strong common bond through skateboarding. The current situation in our country has led me to meditate a lot on my own life and place in this world. One thing I keep coming back to is how skateboarding, from the very beginning, has connected me with so many diverse people and likely shaped a perspective about others that I might not otherwise have had. I say this while acknowledging that I am still learning, now more than ever. This sculpture was a giant middle finger painstakingly made of tiny colored wooden cubes cut from old skateboards. I love what it represented, and in pieces, still represents. This giant f___ __u will be even more beautiful and symbolic if Haroshi can rebuild. 📢Sorry for my delay in getting this to you guys! I mentioned in the last post (check it out to refresh your memory) that one clue weve seen that indicates you are someone who has injured (or might be prone to injuring) your leg in skiing: HAMSTRING strength, particularly in a fast twitch sense. ⛷️ This means, maybe you have strong hamstrings when youre slowly doing heavy kettlebell deadlifts. This is awesome. But skiing happens FAST. Things can go wrong FAST. We need the hamstring to contact and protect QUICKLY!! ⛷️ Attach a strong band to a stable post, and loop around your ankle. Get onto hands and knees, with the working leg outstretched behind you. Keep the core stable! Dont let yourself rotate, sidebend, wobble, etc!! And keep the back straight! ⛷️ Pull the knee up toward the chest quickly. 🔥But heres the catch!!!!!!!🔥 PULL WITH YOUR HEEL!! Dont do a crunch and pull your knee up using your thigh muscles! This is not the contraction we want! Pull the heel up toward your butt, the knee will come up with it, but dont let the back round.... Keep it straight!!! ⛷️ Slowly release the contraction to your starting point to get some extra oomph in your strengthening. ⛷️ This will help strengthen the hamstring in a position of knee and hip bend, which we are ALWAYS IN DURING SKIING. It will also train it to work quickly, so it can react quickly while youre on the slopes!! ⛷️ Questions? Message or comment below! 🗣 Want to avoid IT band issues for good?! ⠀ ❌ Stop foam rolling!! ⠀ Your IT band doesn’t contract. Foam rolling is for your muscles, not your connective tissue. Plus, you aren’t really fixing the source of the problem in doing this... ⠀ ✅ Here are some tips! ⠀ For runners, IT band syndrome can be caused by weaknesses, or muscle imbalances, in your hips, glutes and/or hamstrings. ⠀ Keep in mind: everyone’s anatomy is different. Some people may have to do some corrective exercises more than others, so be sure to find what works best for you. ⠀ 💥 The source of the problem IS NOT ALWAYS WHERE THE PAIN IS! The origin of the issue is usually somewhere else, and in this case, it might be in your hips or glutes. So, your IT band might be inflamed because it’s overcompensating to make up for possible muscle imbalances in your posterior chain when you run. ⠀ ▶️ I find the 6 movements above extremely helpful in firing up my posterior chain so that my IT band doesn’t overcompensate for any weaknesses in areas like my glutes. ⠀ ⛓ The Movements: (Do 3 rounds of this circuit 2-3 times a week) ⠀ 1️⃣ Lateral Gluteus Medius Activation (10 each leg) ⠀ 2️⃣ Isolated Glute Bridges (5 each leg) ⠀ 3️⃣ Compound Copenhagen Drills (5 each side) ⠀ 4️⃣ Banded Pulse Lunges (10 each leg) ⠀ 5️⃣ Single Leg Pistols (modified on a bench) (5 each leg) ⠀ 6️⃣ Flat Foot Curtsey Lunges (10 each leg) ⠀ - @meg_takacs on Instagram

❗️A 10/10 fashion statement on your foot may be causing you 10/10 long term damage to your bodies functionality. ❗️ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ If you’ve been following me since September you’ll know I’ve transitioned to being completely barefoot and I won’t ever go back. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ These photos are 173 days apart and I could show my current progress in May, but I want to show just what 5 months of being completely barefoot and using @correcttoes has done for me and potentially what it can do for you. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Prior to this change I was wearing traditional shoes such as: Adidas Rainbow Sandals Nike Flyknit Racers Aldo Dress Shoes Toms ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ All of these shoes are VERY popular and are very abundant but lack a lot of what our feet need. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Our society has changed our footwear standards by having our feet fit the shoe and not our shoe fit our feet. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ In just 5 months of being barefoot and focusing on the functional health of my feet I have: 1. Developed an arch with ZERO arch support. 2. My toes have spread allowing for natural arch formation. 3. Anterior pelvic tilt (butt sticking out) has immensely gone down by removing elevation of the shoe. 4. Knee cave in due to foot pronation (flat feet) has gone away and my bodies ability to use my hips and foot for functional movement has increased. 5. Deep squat hip pain has been largely reduced. 6. Propioception has largely increased allowing for conscious heel striking and awareness of walking habits. 7. There was a point in time where men were legitimately strong as fuck. Despite not having access to performance enhacing drugs, they regularly performed raw feats of extreme physicality almost unheard of today. Despite putting themselves through the ringer almost daily, their bodies moved well, they didn’t hurt as often, and they typically didn’t have most of the degenerative orthopedic issues commonly seen today Its worth noting that they also didn’t have a bunch of collard shirt personal trainers and podcasters shoving bullshit academic studies down their throat about what exercises were “dangerous” and “safe” to do either I have no real bias in favor of “traditional” strength training. It’s a means to an end for me. In fact, if I could completely replace it with something that I honestly felt was more effective, I would in a heartbeat. With that being said, I think there’s a lot of people in the performance community right now who hate on strength training simply because they wouldn’t have anything else to blabber on and on about in their two hour long podcasts. Hey. When you run out of stuff to say just make shit up, right!? This conversation turned quickly from: 1. “Strength is not all that matters” (yea no shit dude) to... 2. “Strength hardly matters, and if you do ANY degree of it, in even a remotely similar fashion to the way most people do in the gym (ya know, with those devil, heel driven back squats and deadlifts), it’ll destroy your gait cycle and cause sports hernias!” [show notes—In our next episode, we’ll have on a guest that says the exact opposite, and then we’ll back track to argument number 1!] 🤣 There’s a lot of people that will hate on Functional Patterns and the notorious “nocebo planters” , then proceed to promulgate the EXACT SAME breed of fear mongering, pseudo nonsense What the fuck is up with that? How much should you alter your form in order to go heavier? Simple answer is, not much. Here I perform 20KG and 32KG snatches showing a clear hinge vs a clear squat pattern. Is one better than the other? That’s for you to decide. I know that if you show up to an SFG certification doing the squatty version, you may not pass. While if you show up hinging like a champ, you most certainly will. Now here is another point. If you can do the hinge, it very likely you can do the squat, but the opposite if not so clear. I think the greater range of motion, inter muscular coordination and tissue adaptation is superior with the hinge. Not so much with the squat. Again, this is my opinion and what you do is entirely up to you. It reminds me of the old argument of whether you should practice high kicks, because you’ll never use them in a fight. Well, if you can high kick, you can low kick. That’s true without a shadow of a doubt. But just because you can low kick does not mean you can high kick. Hinging while snatching, heavy or light, is the more demanding technique. So now you must ask yourself, do you want to ride a fast bike slow, or a slow bike fast? Only you can decide. 🔸Hips and the Adductors! 🔸Strengthening and lengthening that groin area. .. 🔸The adductors can often get neglected in favour of the glutes when it comes to back, hip or knee pain but they are super important. . 🔸They originate from the pelvis attaching onto the inner thigh and act like bungee cords to decelerate stress to the Lower back and pelvis as we move from side to side such as in a golf swing, tennis or sudden changes in direction. They lengthen under tension. If they can’t do this effectively then this can lead to decreased performance or increased risk of injury. . 🔸This @stickmobility exercise works the adductors as they are lengthening. Tension and load is increased by driving through the stick. This helps us strengthen our adductors through their full range. The glutes work hard to control the position of the hips whist we add thoracic rotation and stretch out the spiral line. . 🔸we did this move tonight in our online stick class as part of a hip flow.
