A villager in Spiti valley brings his Yak back home from the open pastures:- The domestic yak is a long-haired domesticated bovid found in Asia. For the major part of the year, they are free-ranging but are secured and brought back to the villages just at the beginning of summer to support farming and collect their undercoat hair. . Each summer, Yaks shed their downy undercoat, and the locals comb out and process the soft, cashmere-like fiber. The courser outer hair makes its way into becoming ropes, tents, and even theatrical wigs while Yaks coat becomes bags and boots. This animal has a special place in the local communities and plays a crucial role in helping them survive in these harsh conditions. . Last month I was lucky enough to be in Bhutan exploring new mountain bike trails for @rideshimano and @yeticycles. On our last day of riding we did a long Bhutanese shuttle (aka 3 hour hike-a-bike) and descended down to the Tigers Nest Temple. Our stellar guides and friends @peldendorji and @yesheytshering helped me get some prayer flags I had carried with me blessed by the monks there. Today I was able to hang them on top of the Highland Peak for the opening day of the season. Thanks Pelden and YT! And thank you to my coworkers who put up with me on a daily basis. Обе канатки идут параллельно друг другу. Чтобы подняться на 3800 надо проехать три очереди: - Первая до станции «Кругозор» (3000 м.н.у.м). Тут есть кафешки, смотровые площадки с головокружительным видом на Баксанскую долину, места для отдыха и туалеты. На каждой «остановке» рекомендуется провести некоторое время, чтобы организм смог немного адаптироваться к новой высоте. - Дальше поднялись уже на 3500 до станции «Мир». Тут мы зашли в кафе и взяли вкуснецкие огромных размеров чебуреки (150 рублей за штуку) с облепиховым чаем (50 рублей за стакан). Всё оказалось безумно вкусным и до сих пор текут слюнки, когда я думаю об этом перекусе. - Третья станция - это «Гара-Баши» на высоте уже 3800 м. Гондола поднимает именно на эту отметку, но мы ехали в вагончиках, поэтому пересели на кресельную канатку и за 200 рублей доехали чуть ниже, чем поднимает гондола. Мы хотели прокатиться на старом подъёмнике, поэтому выбрали такой вариант подъема (плюс он дешевле). В основном же все поднимаются именно на гондоле. Это гораздо удобнее и выше. Дальше пошли вверх уже на 4050 м к Приюту-11. Dayara Bugyal Trek Itinerary Day 1 - Drive from Haridwar - Barsu (220 kms/day-long drive) Embark on your journey at dawn with a meal and a day-long drive from Haridwar to Barsu covering 220 kms. The route trails through the scenic towns of Rishikesh, Chamba and Uttarkashi beside the Bhagirathi River. On arriving Barsu that stands tall at 7,545 ft, settle down for the evening in a guesthouse. Day 2 - Trek from Barsu - Barnala (4 hours) This 4 kms long trek is a gradual ascend landscaped beautifully with Rhododendrons, Silver Oak and Deodar forests. Reach the destination for the day which is Barnala at an elevation of 8,530 ft. It is this place which marks the beginning of the famed undulating stretches of green prairies or ‘Bugyals’. Set up your campsite at this ideal location and retire here for the night. Day 3 - Trek from Barnala - Dayara Bugyal (5 kms) This day entails an ascending trek of about 5 kms to the high alpine meadow of Dayara Bugyal, Uttarakhand that is elevated at 9,980 ft through the Barnal grasslands. On arriving this vast meadow that resembles a table top, you can catch sight of some majestic peaks, namely Srikanth, Rudregaira, Gangotri I, II & III, Jaonli, Draupadi ka Danda I & II, Black peak, Bandarpunch and such. Spend the night in the camp set up here. Day 4 - Trek from Dayara Bugyal - Bakaria Top - Dayara Bugyal (3 kms) This day marks the climb up from Dayara Bugyal to Bakaria top, the highest point of the vast meadow standing at 12,000 ft. Get enchanted by the panoramic views of snowy peaks, lush valleys and such from the top. Depart from Bakaria back to the campsite at Dayara Bugyal. Day 5 - Trek from Dayara Bugyal - Pichkiya (8 kms) Begin the day with a hearty meal after which starts your descent to Pichkiya that is at an elevation of 7,873 ft. After trekking 6 to 7 hours through a mix of ascends and descends over alpine meadows, dense woods and little rivulets, reach the campsite of Pichkiya. Day 6 - Trek from Pichkiya to Barsu (4.5 kms) This last day of Dayara Bugyal trekking, it involves descending down to Barsu along a well marked trail through the surrounding thickets. FIRST EVER EXPLORATION~ SARASWATI VALLEY, UTTARAKHAND HIMALAYAS ~1937, The Legendary Mountaineer Mr. J.B. Auden imagined about a pass connecting Nelang Valley with Arwa Valley via Mana Gl. He couldnt find it following the latest map he had. He could only reach a high point (later described as Mana Col by Harish Kapadia) on the divide of Mana West & East Gl. From where he could see a gap on the Eastern rim of Mana Glacier. Which he thought could reach him Saraswati Valley by some easier access. In 1990 Harish Kapadia reached that Notch 5907, named it as Saraswati col. He described it as a passage to Ghastoli. These two mentions of these 3 mammoth cols attracted us to explore & cross those from a totally unexplored side Saraswati Valley in 2011. Debuda @mountain_guide_deba had a lot of pain to get the permit to enter that Highly Alarming China Border Area, he was our climbing leader & brainchild of this fantastic route. There is a gentle slope on Mana Glacier but on Saraswati Valley side it is just a sheer drop of 160 mtr. or rotten rock & scree wall of 80 degree. TRIMUKHI Col (5924 m), named by us, is a single Col connects all the three Valleys Arwa, Nelang & Saraswati. A new route found & Opened for the use of Avid trekkers & ITBP, Indian Army to keep vigil in that area. When I first started climbing I was working two jobs and living in a studio apartment. I made a list of all the things (gear) I would need to get to be able to keep climbing, and each month I would do the math on how much ramen instead of fresh food was required to be able to buy those crampons or that waterproof jacket. People shared their knowledge and gear and time with me and eventually I was able to share my knowledge, time and gear with others. I believe that being generous with what you have (time, knowledge, physical things) will always come back to you. I am very closely associated with both charities. Whatever is raised will be split equally between SHF and NDA Dang. According to the folklore there used to be a demon named Bhasmasur. He worshipped lord Shiva for many years. By seeing his dedication lord Shiva was so happy that he asked Bhasmasur to ask for anything. Bhasmasur asked for the power of burning any creature just by placing his hand on the head of the creature. Lord Shiva blessed him with the asked power. Bhasmasur became so proud of his power that he tried to burn lord Shiva. Then lord Shiva had to hide in a cave near Nirmand at Deo Dhank. Lord Vishnu came to save Lord Shiva from the demon. Vishnu incarnated himself as Mohini a beautiful lady. She (Vishnu) asked the demon Bhasmasur to dance with her. Bhasmasur was so much mesmerised with the beauty of Mohini that he could not resist himself from dancing with Mohini. Mohini cleverly got Bhasmasur to place his hand on his head and Bhasmasur turned into ashes. Just after Bhasmasur burned all the God’s reached Deo Dhank to look up lord Shiva. They found Lord Shiva trapped under the web in the cave. It was very difficult to release lord Shiva from there. So Lord Shiva used a secret route and emerged as Shakti Roop at Shrikhand Mountain from cave at Dev Dhank. When lord Shiva was getting out from Shrikhand Mountain, there was a great blast and only the present Shrikhand Shivling remains. On the way to Shrikhand top you can see big boulders that look like pieces of any big mountain. At Shrikhand there is the main peak (Shivlinga) dedicated to lord Shiva. Just opposite to it another group of big stones are known as Godess Parvati and Lord Ganesh. Just behind the Shrikhand peak there is a peak known as Kartikeya Parvat. After we abandoned our first attempt on Everest without supplemental oxygen on the 25th of September 1992 at the South Summit (8,750 m), we went all the way back down to base camp and then returned to the South Col (7,906 m / 25,938 ft) one week later. Again, all but one of the 10 team members and the whole Sherpa team reached the South Col. Unfortunately, the next morning (3rd of October 1992), the wind was too strong again and we couldn’t make a summit push. All members abandoned their attempt and descended - only myself, the late Sonam Tshering Sherpa and his older brother Nawang Thiele Sherpa stayed for another day and night. It was my third night at almost 8,000 m without supplemental oxygen. Even though the wind didn’t calm down on the morning of the 4th of October I wanted to try another summit push and Sonam immediately decided to join me. Without supplemental oxygen at such high altitudes, cold temperatures and wind have a much bigger negative effect on the body. We knew it was too windy to reach the summit safely under the conditions, so we each took a 2-litre-bottle of oxygen which we periodically opened and closed during the ascent. Sonam Tshiring Sherpa from Beding in the Rolwaling area of Nepal and I became friends in the autumn of 1989 when we worked together for the first time. He was the Sirdar for my Nuptse NW Ridge expedition. In 1992, after he already had climbed Everest three times - I hired him as the Sirdar and head of the Climbing Sherpas of my 1st commercial Everest expedition. In these pictures you see (1) Sonam climbing the last few metres before the South Summit (below you can see the South Col with its tiny tents above and right (1 p.m.) from Sonam’s head). (2) Sonam having crossed the South Summit where climbers have to descend for about 10 metres. (3) Sonam during one of the brief oxygen pauses during the ascent. (4) Sonam happily back in basecamp after our ascent ….and (5) Sonam and me together after packing up basecamp before the return march to Lukhla. Masherbrum, 7,821 m (25,659 ft), the 22nd tallest peak in the world. #masherbrum (Urdu: ما شربرم ; AKA K1 or Queen of Peaks) is the 9th highest in Pakistan. It was the first mapped peak in the #karakoram mountain range, hence the designation K1. First summited in 1960 via the SE face by Irving Bell, Willie Unsoeld and Nick Clinch, this peak has seen very few accents and many attempts. A few of the worlds strongest have attempted the NE face, capped by a steep big wall (pictured), but remains unclimbed. These five pictures show Sonam Tshering Sherpa nearing the summit of Mt. Everest on a windy 4th of October, 1992. Nine days before, we had reached the south summit (8,750 m, 28,704 ft) (me without supplemental oxygen), but had to return because it was too cold, too windy and my feet were becoming dangerously cold. This time -before starting our 2nd summit attempt- I spent two nights at the South Col (7,906 m / 25,938 ft) without supplemental O2. Unfortunately, once again, the wind was strong and so I finally decided to climb with one 2-litre bottle of oxygen. After taking this sequence of pictures, the battery of my SLR camera was empty - so our only summit shot was taken with Sonam’s disposable Fuji Quicksnap camera. I will show it in my next post. Behind Sonam, to the right, you see the starting part of the unclimbed east ridge of Nuptse, and straight behind him, you see the unclimbed southwest ridge of Lhotse. I was deeply content that I had not carried a watch with me to keep time, as the obsession with time and speed is in fact one of the greatest detractors from the alpine experience. I was happy that my entire adventure had been onsight, on my first visit to the mountain, and that the route had been in completely virgin condition. One of the greatest challenges of mountaineering is in dealing with the natural obstacles the mountain provides. So often in modern alpinism routes will be fearsomely difficult for the first party of the season, and then once the obstacles have been cleared, a track established, the tunnels dug, the way becomes easy to follow. Climbing routes with an established track simply in order to attain the summit, or keeping time in order to set records reduces the adventure of alpinism to that of a sport climb and strips the route of its full challenge. As a young climber, it is undeniable that I have been manipulated by the media and popular culture and that some of my own climbs have been subconsciously shaped through what the world perceives to be important in terms of sport. Through time spent in the mountains, away from the crowds, away from the stopwatch, and the grades, and all the lists of records, Ive been slowly able to pick apart what is important to me and discard things that are not. Of course the journey of learning never ends, but Ive come to believe that the natural world is the greatest teacher of all, and that listening in silence to the universe around you is perhaps the most productive way of learning. So often people are afraid of their own thoughts, resorting to drowning them out with constant noise and distraction. Is it a fear of learning who we actually are that causes this? WHEN THE VIEW OVERWHELMS YOU 🏔 (Swipe right to see from sunrise to sunset) Denali National Park is a great place to witness Alaskas vast wilderness and wildlife. But the hot topic of the visit is always is the mountain out?. This 20,310 ft #Denali Mountain creates its weather system, so its often hidden in the clouds. Once a year @denalinps hosts a #DenaliRoadLottery2020 (the one and only 92.5-mile park road is closed for private vehicles other than a few exceptions) and visitors can drive their cars to the end of the road. Luckily, I won! We went to the park this week, didnt expect too much. Just the fact that we could drive into the park would be special enough. Then we saw this view. We got a sunny day and spectacular views of Denali from sunrise to sunset. When I camped and explored the park this summer for five days we didnt even see a glimpse of Denali and I said the wildlife and nature are special enough. But I take it back. This view is really something. The Denali mountain is not only the highest peak in North America, its the tallest mountain in the world. More than 80% of the mountain is taller than the foothills. And its hard to understand what it actually means until you see this view. We drove to the end, the view got better and better. We didnt see much wildlife this time but the view alone totally made our day. The name “Denali” stems from “deenaalee” meaning high or tall, which is from the Koyukon Athabascan language traditionally spoken on the north side. Thank you @denalinps for this amazing opportunity. Himalaya 05: basecamp We were here. In the zone. Among the mountains. We made it to basecamp feeling pretty good and healthy which is sometimes not the case. We dodged any food borne illnesses along the way and though felt the 16,000ft altitude of basecamp it was acceptable. During the two and half weeks in this zone, there were a number of helicopter extractions from basecamp of people who did not adapt to that altitude as well. It’s a slow process independent of your physical fitness level. After all that travel it’s hard to not want to get to it right away, but the altitude is very apparent and kept us in check. This was the first time we could fully get in out bags and get settled since leaving home. It gave me a chance to go through and clean camera gear, setup and test solar charging. We each had a tent to ourselves (quickly filled with 50% mountain gear and 50% camera gear) and a dome tent for dining - pretty spacious and luxurious for mountaineering. The basecamp was larger than anticipated and everyone else at camp was there for a nearby 7000M peak. Earlier in the planning we contemplated skiing it but opted for a more technical, more aesthetic and much more comple mountain that offered the potential for some much lower probability but stunning ski lines. This was also the first time we put eyes on that objective. Our sherpa team prepared an incredible meal that first night (and thereafter) to great relief as the teahouse meals were a nice cultural experience but not keeping up with the higher protein, higher fat and large quantity of food I was used to - especially when active in the mountains. This was starting to be a critical concern of mine. Doug Scott is a legendary climber. His climbs in the Himalaya were the foundation for a generation worth of dreams of climbing. The 1975 ascent of the Southwest face of Everest was the real deal. The ascent of the south face of Shishapangma, pictured here, was another climb of the ages. More than climbing Doug has helped the communities that intertwine with his life. @communityactionnepal is dedicated to helping rural Nepal. In March Doug was diagnosed with cerebral lymphoma, a type of brain cancer. Subsequently, he has been limited to the ground floor of his home in the Lake District. #AnnapurnaWithoutOxygen 163 days left! “Dont give up. Dont give in. Wake up, release your warrior and tell your demons, NOT TODAY!” This is going to be my route just like last year. The most technical part in this whole route being the ‘Dutch Rib’ starting at 6600m between Camp 2 and Camp 3. Last year I was also part of an accident between Camp 3 and Camp 4 which I have hardly spoken about to people. In short basically due to an anchor failure some people fell from the top onto me. (Not blaming anyone here, such accidents can happen in high mountains.) Resulting in myself having a short fall of about 60-70m. Before I could even realise what had happened, I was slipping on my back, head down the steep slope between Camp 3 and Camp 4. My sheer luck that an old expedition abandoned fixed line which was running horizontally right to left on the mountain got stuck in my crampons and I got saved. Immediately the other members of my team came to my rescue but it took them a while to reach as I had slipped down quite a bit. - On May 29th in 1953 Edmond Hillary and Tenzing Norgay became the first people to officially summit Mt Everest. In May of 2019 10 people so far have died because so many people climb Everest now that theres traffic jams getting to the top.
