Spent most of Monday hiking and meeting the wonderful TNC Ohio staff at the Edge of Appalachia Reserve! @nature_org has been protecting land in Ohio since their first 42-acre purchase in 1959. Today, TNC Ohio has protected more than 20k acres with even more in the pipeline. It felt good to be out in nature (and out of the city)! The Azores are located smack in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean between Boston and Europe. Part of Portugal they are spread out for just over 900 square miles, and are home to the tallest mountain in Portugal, which I hiked solo in the dark, as well as a few UNESCO World Heritage Sites, hot springs, volcanic calderas, vineyards and moody beaches. I loved the Azores and visiting a few of the 9 islands was part of my 11 day solo trip through Portugal a few years back. This was my first really big solo trip and really the beginning of my solo travel adventures, because I havent turned back since. Today was supposed to be the day our group took on the Mount Whitney day hike.... . Even though in the end we missed our chance due to the historic fires and the impeding forest closures, we still managed to compile a priceless cache of memories while training over the last five months. We took on some of the toughest climbs around while spending quality time with some of the people we love most. We laughed and cried, cursed and rejoiced. Most of these hikes have taken place in the areas that right at this very moment lie within the burn lines. It fills me with lots of joy to have spent so much time there recently but I would be lying if I said I havent shed a tear in the last day or two. I often run, I often camp. But only rarely do I run AND camp. This past weekend I had the opportunity to run the Gallatin Crest from Mammoth Hot Spring in Yellowstone to Hyalite Canyon with @wolfepaw and Jason Donald - 2 of the best adventure partners I know. . We took packs with food and camping gear (sleeping bag, jetboil, mug) and ran-hiked all day two days in a row through some of the wildest, most gorgeous country I know. Total stats: about 75 miles w/ 22k ft of vert. Lots of peaks, views, and jokes. Theres really something special about going a long way through wild country self-supported. . Fav pics from a challenging and strenuous T-shaped peak-bagging hike of 19.75 miles and 6,431 feet combined elevation gain with Noelle in the San Gabriel mountains in the Angeles National Forest on Thursday, July 16, 2020. This hike started from Icehouse Canyon trailhead pre-dawn with summits as follows: 1. Ontario peak (8,694), 2. Bighorn peak (8,441), 3. Cucamonga peak (8,859), and 4. Etiwanda peak (8,661). We returned via the Icehouse Canyon trail. Weather was accommodating on the summits, mid-60s with cooling breezes above Icehouse saddle. Bring *at least* 3L electrolyte water and extra drinks with carbohydrates to prevent dehydration. Electrolyte pills help. Also pick a cool day and start before dawn ideally during the summer months. Half Dome hike trip in Yosemite with my brothers from High School was much needed. Couldn’t miss the opportunity to attempt it. We all shot for our personal bests on the hike. I made it to Yosemite Valley (6000+ ft up/10+ miles) til my legs started cramping 🍌. My man Ray made it to Sub Dome and B and Sean summited Half Dome easily. We all made it back safely with no 🚁 or 🚑 needed lol. Overall, it was good to drink, eat meat, and chill in the woods together lol. This is what it looks like to go for a tough FKT and come up short. ( yes mom, I know I look tired 😓) 3:59:46 of work and came up 27 seconds short ☠️. Yeah.. after almost 4 hours-27sec does sting a little. Jasper Skyline trail is one of the most epic 28miles straight I’ve ever ran anywhere on this planet. Maybe not stopping to take a few pics would have saved me time...Either way I’m completely happy to miss the overall title 👑 on this trail. It is quite the record and I like to fail if I know I did my best. The past few days have been tough on my body in all the best ways, but it wasn’t ideal for this attempt today. As I look back and reflect on this last week in Colorado, one word seems to bubble to the top of the soup that is my thoughts. That word is patience. It’s been easy for me to get down on myself after the go at the TRT that went south, and then my asinine attempt as self redemption that was the botched Tushars 100k. However, as I looked down from the top of Longs Peak, it struck me that these instances were rocks in a mountain, two instances that meant a lot to me, but in the grand scheme of the world only meant that much to me. And much like the rocks in a trail it’s up to me how I approach the next climb and use the rocks to the best of their hopeful potential. . . While I was on Longs I began to reminisce, 8 years ago I moved to Denver, while there I completed my undergrad in Finance, lived abroad in Shanghai, learned mandarin, summited all the 14ers in 10 months to raise money and awareness for Alzheimer’s, got into trail running, raced my first 50, and much much more. 6 years later, so two years ago, I moved to Salt Lake to start law school. This experience and choice in school has led me to find a new home in some incredible mountains, surrounded by people that I love and cherish. It has challenged me and has truly changed the way that I view and approach life. Running has taken a shape that I only once dreamed of, and I am excited to announce that next year after graduation I’ll be moving back to Truckee for a judicial clerkship in Reno. Looking back on the time spent in both places I am baffled by how much as happened and how much has changed in my life, for the better. It is and has been really easy to be overly critical on myself and my performances in two instances. I am grateful for the time spent in Colorado and the ability to take a step back and smile, just because I can and because there is a lot to be grateful for, no matter what one or two instances might make you think. We are all creatures on a beautiful and unpredictable journey and we deserve to be patient with ourselves and remember that life is a process, a culmination of experiences and choices that takes years to take shape. What brings you comfort? 🍃 Summer is coming to an official close on the calendar after today, but theres no end in sight to the heat here in New Mexico. Im lounging, reading the latest book in the twilight saga, reminiscing on how weird me and my best friend used to obsess over the series- so she feels a little closer than 1600+ miles away. We go again. Tomorrow for the third time, I’m attempting to become the first person in history to complete a continuous, unsupported single round of all 214 Wainwright’s. Approx 320 miles with 35000 meters of ascent. No food stops, aid stops, support crew, nothing but what’s on my back. I’m aiming to complete it in under 12 days. Long days in the big hills of Torridon last week, feeling a lightening of the weight of the past months, & the deepening calm brought by being in a deep-time landscape of half-billion-yr-old sandstone, which wrinkles like elephant skin & seems to run like candle-wax. We made high camp in the north-facing Triple Buttress Corrie of Beinn Eighe & I gave quiet thanks (again) to the makers of the long path which curls round into that mountain amphitheatre; truly a work of land-art in its grading & line. The light at that height made mercury of the rivers in the glens & silvered the quartzite screes of Beinn Eighe (File Hill) & Liathach (The Grey One). I was thrilled to find thrift growing at over 3000 feet on the Beinn Eighe ridge—and to be reminded of the hyperbolic tropical colours of the insectivorous sundew down in the sphagnum, with its gleaming, fly-catching dewdrops. From our camp, the sun fell over the Fisherfield Wilderness & it was not hard to imagine glacial ice filling those U-shaped valleys only ten thousand years ago. In the night a gale got up and proved all but too much for my little tent, which it pummelled broadside on. On Liathach we traversed Am Fasarinen, The Pinnacles, in a cold & unnerving south-west wind. Now back to earth, sea-level & work, rubbing my eyes slightly at the memory of it all. We even avoided the midges (god bless that south-westerly)... Some of you, I know, live among these hills (@redrubyrose, @red_river_wild). Others — have you been? Climbed there, walked there? JMT: The First 24 Hours 🏕 . Day 1 (7/7): Happy Isles (Mi 0) to Sunrise Creek (Mi 8) . “I’m not going to lie. This hasn’t been easy. Not that I thought that it would be. But man is it tough!” - My journal . I won’t devote a full post to each day, but I believe the first day can be pivotal. I left Happy Isles, the official start of the JMT in Yosemite, around noon. My sleeping bag wasn’t warm enough, due to poor last minute gear switches after an all-nighter at home, and I picked up a second one at Curry Village that morning to layer. I was a mess leaving late and carrying too much weight, but at least I’d be warm. . I snapped the obligatory trailhead sign selfie (🤪😁) and began my way up. Having grown up in the Bay Area and visited Yosemite many times, this first day felt familiar. While most JMT hikers take the Mist Trail for its gorgeous views, I stayed true to the JMT in favor of its slightly less steep incline. I pulled aside for others, made rare small talk, and stole scenic glimpses. . Day hikers lessened after the falls, and I slogged on. Between mi 4-6, I excitedly met my first fellow JMTers, K and her uncle D, the first friends and repeat characters in my saga. . The first day out of the valley is no joke, and I was exhausted after almost 3k ft of elevation gain. I planned on hiking 9-10 mi but began bargaining with myself long before. I blasted music and finally found my first campsite around 8pm at mi 8, a flat spot among wild fire-burnt trees near Sunrise Creek. I set up my tent, texted my mom I’d arrived (via my @garmin inReach Explorer Mini), and, too tired to cook, mixed dehydrated soup with cold water and ate the crunchy mush in the dark. . I was exhausted but weirdly didn’t feel deafeningly defeated. As hard as today was, I expected it would be. I also knew that tomorrow would be even just a bit easier. “I can do hard things,” I often said to myself those first few days. . The next morning, I told myself with a groggy smile, “you’re officially a backpacker!” Then I made breakfast, packed up, and set off to do the hard thing again. .
