With a year round population of about 91,000 and summer population in the hundreds of thousands, it is good news that our area has been relatively safe. State wide we are seeing (if you count all the recorded hospitalizations as purely covid based) up to 450 people in the hospital- .005% of state population. 5KM RACE & PB🥰 Ive been training hard and Ive been so keen to race, so when we spotted this 5km going ahead from @eventsatw, @coachseanuk decided it was time for me to go and retest my 5km time. The temperature has dropped hugely recently and standing in a field in the freezing wind I started to question my choices and I have still got a lot of work to do to work out my gear here but it was just so nice to stand on a real (socially distanced) start line. My aim today was just to beat my previous PB of 20:57 and to run the best race I could. The staggered start line means you have no idea of how you are placing so I just kept myself moving and it paid off as I placed second woman overall and cut 44 seconds off my previous time. I still dont class myself as a fast runner so Im really proud of this one! Thanks @eventsatw for putting on a great COVID-19 friendly event! I just realized I passed 2000 days since I quit drinking. 26 days passed actually. It is amazing that it’s been months since I opened that app, because the first couple days I literally watched this app count every minute. And now 2000 days later I can pass such a milestone without even thinking about it. Back then I couldn’t understand what would fill the void of drinking and all the fun that came from it. It turns out that it got filled with success, happiness and satisfaction. I remember wondering if life even mattered and it turns out that it does. Addiction will play all sorts of fucked up games with your mind to keep you around. But even though sobriety seemed so hard and success so far, neither turned out to be the case. All I had to do was hang on for the one minute I had right now and then stay in the moment. Watching it count made every moment count. I remember after I hit Day 12 and realized that it was the longest I had ever gone without drinking as an adult I knew I was going to stay sober. Not because of the 12 days, but by staying in the moment during those minutes of those days I became strong against the pull and now had a streak to protect. If you are suffering, you don’t need to conquer or overpower addiction.. just stay in the moment. You only have to win this one minute. The previous minute was harder than this one and the next will be easier. Temptation will come, but you will be stronger in that moment because of the courage you earned from the last one. Courage is like a muscle, it strengthens with use and every minute, every rep makes you more prepared for the next. Remember, you are so much closer to success than your mind is telling you. I first ran promising to bring my work ethic — and training as an organizer — to fight in Sacramento on behalf of California’s working families. In my first year in the Assembly we worked hard on the biggest issues facing our state — on our affordable housing crisis, ending gun violence, and fighting hunger — but we still have much more work to do. And although its unclear who we’ll face in November — I want to thank Jeanne and Sara for stepping up to run. Putting your name on the ballot isnt easy, but its whats required for a healthy democracy. And I must say — its been refreshing to run with an all-female field of candidates! Its an honor of a lifetime to serve this district, and I’m so grateful our vision for the East Bay — and for California — is shared by so many here at home.
