I cannot stress this enough. Not because I am deaf, but this is just common sense. If someone wants to be a doctor, who do they talk to? Doctors. If one wants to be a chef, they study chefs. Why shouldn’t families meet a deaf and hard of hearing individual or better yet individuals because our community is so diverse? Often after meeting deaf and hard of hearing mentors, hearing families tell me that they wish they had met a deaf adult or had a deaf mentor earlier. Did you know that you can request a deaf mentor? Don’t let anyone tell you differently! In the new EHDI reauthorized bill, families can request a deaf mentor. Some states already have a program established and some states are in the process. Check www. Deaf-mentor.skihi.org. For clarification- I do not have issues in families meeting with an AVT (auditory verbal therapist) or an audiologist. They all make up the early intervention team and families should meet them all in order to make informed decisions. We recently posted a slide about the problem with using terms like permaculture and regenerative. Let’s dive deeper into that. These brands appropriate Indigenous language and land-use practices, brand them as white concepts, and then commodify them. Training courses, trademarks, and intellectual property laws are then developed and sold to the wealthy elite to further perpetuate the siloing of wealth generation in white communities. But whether it’s permaculture or regeneration, the founding principles are based directly on BIPOC knowledge. This trend of “rebranding” Indigenous knowledge consistently positions white people as the problem-solvers and solution-generators, while positioning people of color as the laborers or beneficiaries. This stretches back to the beginning of colonization; enslaved Africans were enslaved for knowledge, not labor; but white people are threatened by this story as it questions their supremacy. Instead, we rebrand BIPOC knowledge to make it more palatable and safe for white people. I guess a spoonful of (white) sugar helps the medicine go down. Why is it so hard for white people to recognize that people of color have the solutions? Why do people flock to an idea presented by a white person but are so threatened when that idea comes from a person of color? Why are ideas that come from BIPOC ignored or overlooked, while white-led initiatives are championed and celebrated? George Washington Carver and Booker T. Whately should be mentioned in the same breath as Steiner or Rodale for their work in agriculture, especially since they directly mentored and helped thousands of the most important food producers in the US. This trend is indicative of a deeper sickness in our society, the white supremacy that permeates everything; the white liberal elite is as guilty of this as everyone else. These terms are not neutral. It’s time to give credit back. It’s time to give land back. Our agricultural system is a 10,000 year old history of whitewashing. Let’s start by listening to the right stories (on this point: why does @kissthegroundmovie have twice the followers of @gatherfilm, an Indigenous-led production? City officials said Tuesday they will not prosecute nine people charged with trespassing on a private and gated street where they were met by gun-wielding homeowners. The nine had been issued summonses earlier this month, but Deputy City Counselor Michael Garvin said in a statement that prosecution is not warranted and charges would be refused. Garvin wrote that the cases had been investigated by municipal court prosecutors, who reviewed video of the June incident, conducted interviews and examined property records of the street, Portland Place. He also said residents who are trustees of Portland Place said through their lawyer that they did not want to pursue trespassing charges. Still pending is one felony count of unlawful use of a weapon-exhibiting against two Portland Place homeowners, Mark and Patricia McCloskey. He was armed with an AR-15 rifle and his wife had a semiautomatic handgun. Charging documents say they pointed the guns at protesters, placing the demonstrators in fear of injury. The protest was not aimed at the McCloskeys. Marchers were using the street as a shortcut to Mayor Lyda Krewsons house. I was a model for 14 years before becoming a Registered Nurse. Before I started my first day on the job as a nurse, I was made aware of the protections I was afforded and where to report any accounts of harassment or other offenses. As a member of NYPNU, the nurses union, there are resources for me to turn to as an employed RN. I was never afforded the same protections as a model, even as a 16-year-old working in a very adult industry. It’s long overdue for the fashion industry to take meaningful steps to protect its vulnerable workforce. Kudos to @ModelAllianceNY for pushing for change for all these years. It’s crucial for @victoriassecret and other companies to sign on to the Respect Program. After recovery from his wounds at Loyola, Ignatius set off to go to Montserrrat, the famous Benedictine monastery high on a hill beyond Barcelona. It has a famous black Madonna statue in its church. Initially, Ignatius traveled with his brother but then went off on his own. On the way toward Montserrat he ran into a Saracen who denied the perpetual virginity of Mary. This incensed Ignatius. After the Saracen rode off, Ignatius made a bargain. He would let his horse determine which way to go. If he followed the Saracen, Ignatius would then kill him for his blasphemy about Mary. If he did not follow the Saracen, Ignatius would go on to Montserrat. Ignatius bought a garment of sackcloth with prickly wooden fibers and some rough shoes as well as a pilgrim’s staff. He determined to spend a nightly vigil before the image of our Lady of Montserrat. He also sought a confessor and spent three days in prayer preparing his confession. Before leaving to go on to Manresa (where he spent nearly a year as a hermit in prayer and penance), Ignatius gave up his horse and hung his sword and dagger in the church. When discussing south asian representation many of us tend to talk about how the media and entertainment industry is severely lacking south asian representation and if present tends to rely on age-old stereotypes about the brown community and people. However, this underrepresentation goes beyond just media, but the creative space as well. Many south asians don’t necessarily feel supported when pursuing creative fields. So, by creating this space, I hope to inspire and promote south asian creatives to follow their passions and explore their creativity. I want to create a community of individuals who support each other and their work. By supporting each other, I really hope we can grow the community and recognition of south asian creatives, so brown kids growing up never feel that a creative field isn’t for them. This year, I am choosing to not take part in celebrating Canada day. This land that most call Canada has never been Canadian. Through colonization, it has been taken from it’s people. My people. We are on Treaty 1 land, home of the Métis people, the flower bead work people. I acknowledge that I am white passing and will never experience the racism and hardships that many of my family and community members have lived through, but today I am reflecting on this country’s hurtful history. Do you know this land’s creation story? Do you know the pain and suffering that went on and continues to happen here in this place? Do you still choose to celebrate even though you are aware of the ongoing Indigenous displacement and genocide in Canada? This morning it rained, our ancestors are still hurting. Today at Belfast’s Custom House Square, almost 500 members of the live events community gathered in a socially distanced, Covid-compliant display. Professions ranging from riggers to sound engineers, tour managers to truck drivers, and many more in-between wore masks and had pre-registered for track and trace as per current Government guidelines during this perfectly-executed event delivery. Clearly an emotional affair, the Northern Irish workers stood in defiance of the Government’s latest financial move, which leaves the live event industry’s skilled workers here facing a bleak future. “The UK Government has offered a 22% wage top up in order to help navigate the next few months. Our industry has not worked since mid-March, so 22% of nothing, is nothing,” says Events Producer Dino Cafolla. “We’re showing MPs that not only are we the most qualified industry to keep people safe at events, but telling them that we’d like to work together on a roadmap which allows our workforce to return. A blanket ban on all events has, in certain circumstances, resulted in illegal, unsafe gatherings by the general public. The glass window was spray painted with the words “Publish the Truth” and branded with the Extinction symbol. Those taking part in the actions wore white dresses made from reused materials that were stitched with slogans such as ‘Ecocide = Genocide’ and ‘Slavery: 41 million people now.’ Condé Nast is the centre of the fashion print empire, and is the parent company of magazines such as Vogue, Glamour, GQ and Tatler. Each month their video content generates more than 1 billion views. They reach 88 million consumers in print, 427 million in digital and 423 million across social platforms.[1]. This the group believes confirms that mass media companies have the choice to influence the changes our civilisation depends upon. Fashion media still relies on selling newness, glamorising destructive levels of consumptions and featuring brands that work against the planet. In a climate emergency, that is irresponsible. The Connolly Youth Movement are gravely disappointed and opposed to the statement by Matt Dapper of Unite the Union in support for Armed Forces Day. A statement which glorifies the British war machine, including its horrific actions in Ireland where they remain present to this day. The Union can no longer continue to ignore these facts and must work in solidarity with the Irish working class, not support those who have occupied and targeted our communities. From the 15th of August to the 23rd hundreds and hundreds of science themed events are being held around Australia and now, more than ever, these events have become more accessible as they move into an online experience during the coronavirus pandemic. No longer are the big science events limited to those who live in the big cities where these events are hosted, or to those who have the privilege of being able to travel to these locations. Anyone from around the country can tune in! Science Week provides great opportunities to expand your horizons and learn something new about the world around you, whether it’s about health and medicine, agriculture, or my personal favourite, space and astronomy. Attending events throughout Science Week allows you to interact with scientists and ask questions about their field of research and learn from the source of new knowledge. There are also lots of opportunities to learn from Indigenous scientists around Australia. Our ancestors navigated across the land using the stars and the planets, they recognised the link between the phases of the moon and the tides. They predicted changes in the weather and identified the variable nature of distant stars in the night sky. And yet, some people still disregard the great knowledge of Indigenous people that is held within our culture and claim that it is “not real science”. And that is the attitude Indigenous scientists and communicators are trying to change in our society. One series of events organised by the National Indigenous Science Education Program (NISEP), Macquarie University, and Redfern Community Centre, showcases a wide range of Indigenous science topics. In the “Indigenous Science Experience” you will be exposed to bush medicines and pharmaceuticals, and global Indigenous Engineering as well as Indigenous Astronomy. This is just one great example of the type of event that amplifies the wonderous nature and complexity of science from Indigenous culture in Australia. 🦋#Dreamers are here to stay ✊🏼The U.S. Supreme Court rejected the Trump administration’s attempt of shutting down the #DACA program, which allows nearly 800,000 undocumented young people, brought to the U.S. as children, protection from deportation. The 5-4 ruling means that Dreamers can keep their protection from deportation and authorization to work in the U.S. The fight is not over as the Department of Homeland Security and the Trump administration can try to rescind the program again, but will have to provide a better explanation for its reason for termination. LINK IN BIO. ⭐️This week marks our last week of fundraising for the National Billboard Campaign, which will commission trans, non-binary, and two spirit BIPOC artists to create billboards that speak to the SACREDNESS of Trans Life. These billboards will be raised in late October - right before the elections, so that our voices can be heard. ⭐️ A billboard is a special medium. It is high up in the air and demands to be seen, but cannot be vandalized or removed. We will raise this potent message, that Trans People are Sacred, to the sky, to weave spells of safety, love, understanding, and justice for our community. ⭐️As of this morning we have raised $28.5k out of our goal of $152k which means that our brilliant curators ( @infinitedakota @indigenousvengeance @randybaby11 ) will be paid $1000 each, and that 13 trans, non-binary, and two spirit BIPOC artists will be paid $1000 each and have their work put on a billboard in a city of their choosing. That’s 13 public works that will create joy, hope, and representation for our community. I firmly believe that public art has the capacity to change culture. ⭐️When you share this campaign, when you donate what you are able, you are helping us cultivate some very potent magic. On Rebellion day 5, September 5th, we hosted ‘pop-up’ Barclays’ Football matches on the streets of London to stress on the co-relation between Football and the climate emergency. These are some reflections from a few of all our rebels who helped creating the action and also participated in the football matches: ‘The Sharklays Football Action combined two unusual ingredients for an XR action - football and laughter. What better way to engage the public and tell the story of Barclays shameful investment in the fossil fuel industry than through a comically rigged game in which all the rules are broken and the referee banker is up for bribes?’ - David B. ‘We were delighted to see how the football action created such great outreach connections. It was easy to connect with a broad audience, people we wouldn’t normally talk with, through 3 simple questions: 1, Are you into football? 2, Which team do you support? 3, Would you like a sticker? An Extinction Rebellion protester proved a catwalk surprise at Paris Fashion Week when they gatecrashed the Christian Dior show and unfurled a sign that read We Are All Fashion Victims”. Reuters reports that a spokesman for the movement in France said the protest was designed to highlight “the impact of the fashion industry on the environment and society. Its not the first time the environment action group have targeted fashion shows to get their message across. At London Fashion Week last year activists attempted to form a human traffic blockade around venues. ☣💀 La Fashion Week de Paris souvre aujourdhui, et PETA était au rendez-vous afin de rappeler que l’industrie de la fourrure ne se contente pas de faire vivre un enfer aux animaux avant de leur arracher la peau, mais est également préjudiciable à la planète et à la santé publique ! Il n’y a rien de « naturel » dans le fait de porter de la fourrure, et, à chaque étape de sa production, la fourrure nuit à la planète. Pour éviter le phénomène de putréfaction qui démarre avec la mort des animaux, les producteurs les traitent avec un cocktail de produits chimiques dangereux comme le chrome. La Banque Mondiale a même classé l’industrie de la fourrure comme une des pires au monde à cause de la pollution aux métaux toxiques qu’elle provoque. Ces substances sont également extrêmement nuisibles à la santé des ouvriers qui travaillent sur les sites de traitement des fourrures, entraînant maladies de peau et cancers. Les élevages danimaux à fourrure sont également des bombes sanitaire à retardement. Ces lieux insalubres, remplis de visons malades, stressés et blessés, sont des foyers de maladies, et des exploitations aux Pays-Bas, en Espagne, au Danemark et aux États-Unis ont vu apparaître des foyers de COVID-19. La situation est devenue si grave que le Parlement néerlandais a voté la fermeture des derniers élevages à fourrure du pays en début d’année.
