FACE member David Kappo speaks this week in Grazia about Race in Higher Education. Fashion has had a long-standing problem with race, but this is especially so with its fashion schools, where diversity is sorely lacking. Im the only permanently contracted Black member of staff at both Central Saint Martins and The Royal College of Art, says David Kappo, a founding member of the new collective of fashion academics and their allies, called FACE (Fashion Academics Creating Equality.) With my students, visibility is important. Its important that they see staff who look like them. Now is the time to have those uncomfortable discussions to make that happen. Kappo is a part of a network of influential tutors, including Zowie Broach, head of fashion at the Royal College of Arts, Judith Watt, pathway leader of CSMs fashion journalism BA, and Berni Yates, an educator at CSM, who have all been waving the flag for racial and economic inclusivity for years. Its not a fad or a trend, says Yates. Its about talent. Ive worked with so many talented students throughout my 30-year career; only now do people seem to care about elevating the voices of Black and non-white students. The entire system is long overdue a reformation. Watt agrees: To build foundations for a fairer and kinder future, there needs to be far stronger dialogue between young people and the older generation. We need dialogue, and trust. They have worked collectively to create a safe space for students who might otherwise have felt alienated. The one thing I would say of everyone in this group is that they realise its not about us. The new performance dates for this production are 25 September – 24 October. With the cold temps coming our way here in Boston, riders and instructors are going to have to layer up a bit more for outdoor class. I want to give a loving reminder to everyone to take EXTRA care of their bodies and take class preparation a bit more SERIOUSLY. Class preparation for me does not begin once I get into the space, it’s kind of an on-going never ending thing. Here are some things that have been helping me on the bike and off on these chilly days! - hot bubble bath/shower at night - alternating between stretching and rolling each night - not showering in the morning or before I teach (@erinfooch taught us the oils on our skin help keep us warm when working out in the cold) - thick knee high socks - lulu thick compression wear, buy some - wear a baseball hat or beanie to keep the heat in and headphones on tighter :) - carbs 2 hours before you ride, protein right after - bring hot tea in a thermos and keep it in your car for right after class - stay happy, it’s a choice and we’re lucky @soulcycle - @ernlinz on Instagram

My vitiligo started when I was 20. At first I was confused as I didn’t knew what it was. I saw a white spot on my hand and whitin a year it had spread everywhere: my hands, my face, and all over my body. . It was very hard at first because it was a change that I had to learn to acceptance experience. It still is hard sometimes when new spots appear. It is also difficult when I get weird looks, or people all of the sudden give me opinions about how to get “rid” of it, even though I don’t ask for advice. . I’ve learned to accept my skin. I also have to say that I have the best family in the world, especially my husband, who supports me SO MUCH everyday. He shows me his love, and even say he loves his “camo girl. . As a woman of African descent, who is the primary support system for a teenager, manages my own business, a variety of other work related projects, a partner and an arts practice. I needed a break!⁣ ⁣ Dont get me wrong, I am a MASTER at honoring my self and my spirit. But this quarantine forced not just me, but literally the entire world to slow its pace. This has given me invaluable time to nurture my home, connect with family and focus on my aspirations in a new way. It has also forced me to be on the computer waaaay more than I would like. I have so many zoom meetings these days as Yeye Teish says, I feel like a zoombie. So, being the Sh8peshifter I am, I shifted. I shifted my wellness and spiritual practices to fit my new reality. Whatever is required to center my joy, has been (re)prioritized and whatever doesnt serve me had to go!⁣ ⁣ Sometimes we get so caught up in doing things the old way that even when everything around us changes, we are still dragging the old us into our new reality. Let me remind you WE ARE NOT GOING BACK TO THE WAY THINGS WERE. We are only moving forward. When you use an expression of quantity (a kilo of…, a bottle of…, a little bit of…) you are expressing a very specific quantity. And these are followed by the preposition de or d’ (+ vowel or h), meaning “of”, exactly like in English. You don’t say “a bottle some water”. You say “a bottle of water”. It’s the same in French: we say: “Une bouteille d’eau” (of water), not “une bouteille de l’eau”( de l’ = some). So, in French, after an expression of quantity, we use “de” or “d” (+ word starting with a vowel), not du, des etc... 4)- Specific Quantity is Zero, None = Pas + de or d’ Following the same logic, pas is a specified quantity: none. Confession time: I used to always compare myself to literally everyone. I used to make a list of all the things I was supposed to be/accomplish. I was “shoulding” myself about every single detail from my academic work to my confidence to my ability to write, think, and create. And like all great unlearnings, I still have my moments. But comparison is a trap. It fills our head up with myths. It breeds jealousy and loneliness. Many of us spend way too much time thinking someone else is living/loving/looking/feeling better than we are. This forces us to compete, often in silence and without an end in sight. It really sucks to feel inadequate and to spend so much time looking outside of yourself that you cannot begin to see your own power. This is your reminder that comparing ourselves to others is a waste of our precious time. You are no one but yourself and shaping who you are around someone who likely isn’t even sure of who they are is a vicious cycle. The greatest gift we can give to ourselves is the truth that we are connected but unique and the world would be a boring place if we didn’t have our own stories to share. Difference is absolutely vital and homogeneity isn’t a solution or possibly. In other words: do YOU. Be YOU. See YOU. You’re meant to exist moment to moment. You’re meant to create yourself while discovering who you are. This parallel within our existence is everything and one of the hardest things for me to understand and accept. Letting go of comparison is an uphill battle not meant to be won, so I’m sending a little love your way to pour back into yourself. No one is you and you are no one else. I’m always honoured to be featured or asked for my opinion on equality & diversity. Make no mistake about it, this is something I (alongside many I know) have been challenging for years - what actually led me to being selected as an @eddyoungleaders 2016 among some bold & courageous people some of whom I now call friends (shoutout @ruubbzz ❤️) _ Equality & Diversity will not come from vague pledges & quotas but from actual people ensuring all sectors are truly Diverse & Equal. Science & Technology has basically carried us through this pandemic, if the teams developing these technologies & carrying out R&D, aren’t equally diverse reflecting the society we live in, these inequalities & inequities will only widen _ As @iddrissandu said “Representation will allow us to become contributors to the full scope of what technology is, how it’s built, designed & used through our lens as the creators of it rather than the consumers of it” _ On the other hand, you see statements from the @lancet journal stating “Those working in science, medicine, and public health must be representative of the societies they seek to help.” It talks about changing recruitment practices into medicine, science & healthcare and it’s truly encouraging. Yoga is for everyone, not just white women. 🧘🏽🧡 I’m not going to lie, when I first started yoga I was low-key intimidated. I looked at the people around me and I didn’t look like them. My first Yoga class was Vinyasa, and I remember feeling extremely out of place when I first entered the room. I was notably bigger than everyone and I was the only person of colour there. For months and months I stuck at it, learning to always ask myself “why am I here?” Because it makes my body feel so damn GOOD, that’s why. And I’ve been coming back every time since. The yoga industry is so white, unwilling to change its ways and hold itself accountable. Sometimes I feel people forget that yoga actually originated in India, not Scandinavia (!!!) There is a rich cultural history behind yoga and I often think many people neglect this. I am trying to educate myself right now on the history behind yoga and it has really broadened my perspective in my practice. I want to see fat bodies doing yoga. I want to see Black bodies doing yoga. I want to see disabled bodies. I want to see all different gender identities doing yoga. I want to see yoga as a safe space for survivors of sexual assault. Yoga as part of trauma therapy. What are your thoughts? This post is in collaboration with @organicbasics.
