Sumatran rhinos can only be found in the forests of Indonesia — and separated by mountainous terrain, they now struggle to find mates in the wild. While this species has lived throughout Southeast Asia for millennia, there are only 80 rhinos left today. Given this critical need, the Society has joined forces with #SumatranRhinoRescue to rescue and relocate these animals to managed breeding facilities, as well as establish new sanctuaries in Indonesia. Elephants are an extremely important keystone species - they are crucial seed dispersers for large seeded fruits like mangoes & durians. They continuously need to feed on plants and fruits to sustain their needs and they defecate up to hundreds of kg per day. Almost 40 newborn elephants have been observed so far this year among the northern sub-population of Tanzanias Tarangire National Park. . These observations are part of our long-running project there. Over 1,000 elephants have been individually identified using photos of ear markings and ear vein patterns. WCS staff monitor the elephants year-round. . This sub-population spends most of the year inside the park, leaving during the March to May rains. Observations this year show that many of the elephant groups stayed outside the park longer than in previous years—likely connected to the unusually large amount of rain. . This—and because of the impact of greatly reduced tourism due to the COVID-19 pandemic—is also why we monitor closely for any upticks in poaching. . You certainly don’t see that everyday! 😳⠀ ⠀ We witnessed a newly born calf that had been born very recently go and start suckling a nearby female black rhino for milk. The two black rhinos were very remarkably gentle and patient with the calf allowing it to suckle with its nervous mother close by. “Mining on areas held by National Parks is banned with immediate effect” – a statement from Zimbabwe’s Ministry of Information, Publicity & Broadcasting on September 8th. This is indeed great news after the future of Hwange National Park looked rather bleak in recent times. Last month, Bhejane Trust, a Zimbabwean based NGO, found Chinese prospectors busy drilling core samples. This was done prior without an environmental impact assessment but with permits that apparently can only be issued by the President. As a result, widespread criticism and an outcry ensued, because coal mining within a national park goes against logic and the purpose of that park being a protected area. In addition, pollution of water and air, in addition to noise pollution, would immediately threaten tourism, as both human and wildlife are put in great danger. Covering an area of 1,500,000 ha Hwange National Park is the largest reserve in Zimbabwe. It is the home of a wide range of sensitive wildlife from pangolins and African wild dogs to rhinos and elephants. The cancellation of all mining in national parks is a win for Zimbabwe’s nature. Après 5 ans, il est temps que je m’exprime sur le combat mené, de parler des expériences vécues au contact des rangers et des espèces sauvages, d’en rapporter les joies et les peines, les nombreux obstacles surmontés. Le braconnage qui détruit les animaux n’est que l’arbre qui cache la forêt de leur future disparition. Les scientifiques évoquent une sixième extinction en référence aux cinq précédentes, toutes issues d’événements cataclysmiques (éruptions volcaniques, chute de météorite, …). Ce n’est pas le cas aujourd’hui. Nous assistons non pas à une sixième extinction mais à une première extermination : celle conduite par notre civilisation qui au nom du progrès et de la rentabilité détruit le Vivant. Cette page Facebook sera désormais le lieu où je m’exprimerai librement, où je donnerai mon opinion sur les thèmes qui touchent notre Combat. Pendant ces cinq années, je n’ai eu de cesse avec mon équipe d’assister les rangers, de protéger les populations humaines fragilisées pour les accompagner dans la défense des espèces sauvages qui leur sont chères. Team, this is what Project 033 is really about. Supporting the horses so the babies remain safe. Before leaving Care for Wild, I helped with a feed for Yster & Anchor. There is nothing more poignant than witnessing an elephant calf standing by his dead mother, in total despair. Wild is Life & ZEN and @ifawglobal will go to extraordinary lengths to rescue such a calf and give it a second chance. Meet SAMSON, the newest member of the rescue herd in Panda Masuie who is 18/22 months old. His mother had a suspected bullet wound, which left her unable to walk on. She died, leaving little Samson as an orphan. ZimParks contacted Wild is Life & ZEN, on Saturday afternoon, requesting assistance to rescue this calf. @josdanckwerts drove with his team to Hwange National Park and worked with ZimParks, through the night. It was a dangerous operation, using cellphone torches and a vehicle headlight to dart the calf with lion heard in the darkness. It was a long stressful journey back to the Panda Masuie boma. ZimParks kindly sent a vehicle to accompany the rescue vehicle all the way back. The team arrived home at 1.00am exhausted. Samson was unloaded and put into a boma, separate from the resident herd so that his introduction to the herd could take place a controlled daytime environment. Two keepers remained, encouraging him to eat and drink. However, he was extremely stressed and agitated, eventually breaking out of the boma. The resident herd were then released to help the handlers. They immediately raced down the hill, trumpeting and rumbling, calling for him to come back. They located Samson within minutes and coaxed him back inside the fence, where they spent the night getting to know each other- at 3.00am! At first light, the team found Samson in thick of the herd, surrounded by all the elephants, still touching and reassuring him. He was not at all agitated. Samson is now swimming and mud bathing, eating browse, walking happily into the sleeping quarters and engaged with the herd. He now has a second chance at a wild life, within a family who will nurture and care for him, for as long as he needs. Pas de date pour la fin des cirques... le dressage occulté et des approximations dans la mise en œuvre ! Les marathoniens de l’océan sortiront des bassines chlorées a minima dans 7 ans. Nous nous réjouissons de larrêt immédiat de la reproduction et de l’interdiction de lacquisition de nouveaux cétacés captifs selon nos demandes. La ministre envisage la création dun sanctuaire, nous proposons notre expertise avec nos partenaires pour cet accompagnement… Hier, deux bélugas retrouvaient une semi-liberté, c’est possible, et tellement souhaitable! Parmi ces annonces, on déplore l’absence de certains thèmes pourtant fondamentaux, et de décisions fortes, sans être surpris de la mollesse de notre pays en la matière. When they are at this size they are very dangerous, they have been known to eat entire sheep if they get onto someones property and the meat is no good from these pigs. Pigs are also very aggressive when hungry. So watch out!

Integritas habitatnya bersaing dengan pertumbuhan masif  langkap (Arenga obtusifolia), sejenis tanaman palem yang menghalangi sinar matahari menembus bagian bawah hutan, menyebabkan tidak tumbuhnya pakan alami badak. Ini  merupakan salah satu ancaman serius, selain bencana alam, bagi keberlangsungan populasi Badak Jawa yang hanya tertinggal di Indonesia. “Badak Jawa harus segera dicarikan “rumah baru” sebagai habitat keduanya selain di Ujung Kulon. Ini adalah langkah mitigasi yang diperlukan untuk menjamin kelangsungan populasi Badak Jawa di dunia,” kata Dr. Arnold Sitompul, Direktur Konservasi WWF Indonesia. “Kondisi habitat badak Jawa di TNUK sangat rentan oleh bencana alam, karena lokasinya yang dekat Gunung Krakatau. However, there’s probably no better inducement for this image than Earth Day’s 50th celebration. • Scenes like this play out every day on Amboseli’s dry lake. The challenge is to be at the right time at the the right location with the right equipment. And with sunset imminent for just about 15 minutes of Amboseli’s 400 square kilometers it is a lot of ground to cover… Thanks to the amazing speed of my guide and driver Sammy, this was a joint team effort came true at exactly the right time. • The angle of the camera works in this low to the ground “Ant Man” position. The sun is at just the right angle and the mud drying up on her skin while she is looking down… It creates the perfect mood and spotlight on the leader of the heard. 𝐓𝐨 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐜𝐮𝐞! 🐘💉 Earlier this week, our team in Zinave National Park noticed an #elephant that was limping badly and dragging its back foot. The veterinary team from @savingthesurvivors were called in to assist. After sedating the elephant the painful wound was cleaned and treated. We were also very relieved to see that the injury was not as a result of a snare, as was first thought. The ranger teams from Peace Parks and the National Administration for Conservation Areas have been working around the clock, removing more than 4 000 snares from the park over the past 18 months. The elephant was soon on his feet again and off to find the rest of the herd - hopefully feeling much better than before! 💖 Through partnerships with organisations like @debeersgroup and @ezemvelokznwildlife, 169 elephants have been rewilded to Zinave over the past 5 years. - @peaceparks on Instagram

Critically Endangered black rhinos face an extremely high risk of extinction in the wild. North Luangwa National Park’s black rhino population was poached to extinction in the 1990s, but rhinos were later reintroduced in the 2000s. This population of black rhinos is currently the only black rhino population in all of Zambia. @frankfurt.zoological.societys partnered with the Zambian Department of National Parks and Wildlife to create the North Luangwa Conservation Program which protects and manages an operational area in North Luangwa National Park. With support from the Rhino Recovery Fund, the North Luangwa Conservation Program will secure this population of black rhinos and will maintain a ‘zero poached’ status through governance assistance, increased intelligence and investigations, and support to the Zambian Department of National Parks and Wildlife. One of the best memories and experience that I have in my field of work is the opportunity that I got to work with elephants. Seven elephant calves stood in front of me as I arrived at WTIs Center for wildlife resuce and rehabilitation in Assam in 2010. Each calf had its own story but all them were rescued from humans. Either they were rescued from the man made trench or from the angry mob of villagers ready to kill the innocent calf. Here they were getting ready to go back to the wild,where they belong. I still remember all of them and their behaviour very clearly. All of them were hand raised and released back to the wild. And two of the elephants that I know, Soni and Tinku were also accepted by wild herd.
