🐧💘 Part 2 & backstory from @tobiasvisuals “During times like this the truly lucky ones are those that can be with the person/people they love most. I captured this moment about a year ago. These two Fairy penguins poised upon a rock overlooking the Melbourne skyline were standing there for hours, flipper in flipper, watching the sparkling lights of the skyline and ocean. A volunteer approached me and told me that the white one was an elderly lady who had lost her partner and apparently so did the younger male to the left. Since then they meet regularly comforting each other and standing together for hours watching the dancing lights of the nearby city. I spend 3 full nights with this penguin colony until I was able to get this picture. Between not being able or allowed to use any lights and the tiny penguins continuously moving, rubbing their flippers on each other’s backs and cleaning one another, it was really hard to get a shot but i got lucky during one beautiful moment. My first trip to Antarctica was in 2016 - not only was it a mind blowing trip for me but also a really influential time in my life looking back. This was shortly after I’d decided against pursuing a career in finance. In this limbo period, I found myself in this surreal landscape pondering all of the big questions in life. Out of the many insights that came from that trip, one was that I have always felt an intrinsic sense of meaning when spending time in nature. Smile! The chinstrap penguin name comes from the thin line of black that extends from either side of their black cap, under the chin. Looking straight on, it almost appears as a smile, with their bill more like a nose. Has anyone seen a remora fish on a dolphin before? These sucker fish are a family of ray-finned fish that attach themselves to larger marine animals, typically sharks. These fish attach to larger animals to catch a free ride while eating scraps and parasites. We speculate this dolphin jumped to try and remove the fish. The last time I posted a photo of a Crab Eater Seal with blood on its face, I received a lot of back lash. I dont ever wish to upset anyone, however I have a responsibly as a guide and a photographer to show the unfiltered reality of our Planet and especially Antarctica. I will not apologize for you being upset at the sight of blood. This is just the natural world. If anything... photographs are intended to trigger an emotion whether it be of happiness, sadness, frustration, content. Photographs tell stories and stories trigger emotions. This photo is of a Giant Petrel feeding on the corpse and a Fur Seal pup that was likely only a few days maybe a week or so old. Its sad that the pup passed but that Giant Petrel likely has a nest with a chick that needs to be fed. Theres a deeper meaning to all the photos we view and in an age of Photoshop and fake news...its important to ask questions and understand what were seeing. People immediately assumed the bloody Crab Eater was injured by humans when reality it was in a fight with another seal for space on an ice berg. A very common occurrence in Antarcitica. Instead of people asking What happened. They immediately criticized the photo and humans. Be curious, dont be afraid to ask questions and gather all the facts before you come to your conclusions. Photo by @FransLanting Most Emperor penguins never touch land in their lives. Their habitat is sea ice. But the rapid warming of Antarctica threatens the base of their existence: The ice is melting out from under their feet. A recent study reported that the world’s second largest Emperor colony suffered a catastrophic breeding failure for 3 years in a row because of changing ice conditions. In 2016, thousands of chicks are thought to have drowned when the sea ice broke up before they were ready to swim. I know firsthand which hardships Emperors face, because I camped out for a month with them on sea ice. I was pleased that the Center for Biological Diversity is using my testimony in its legal effort to get Emperors recognized as an endangered species by the U.S government. For the CBD lawsuit I stated, Emperor penguins are as vulnerable and important a symbol for the effects of climate change in Antarctica as polar bears are for the Arctic.” If Emperors get listed, we can put the requirements of the Endangered Species Act to work on their behalf. The Endangered Species Act has been an essential tool that has aided the recovery of wolves, bald eagles, condors and many other species. The future for Emperor Penguins Probably you have already seen a photo of an Emperor Penguin (Aptenodytes forsteri) and its magnificence. The biggest penguin reaching 1.22 meters (4 feet) high and 37 kg (81.5 pounds) is in great danger. Recent studies using satellite image (Sentinel2) have discovered 8 new colonies and rediscovered 3 which is very good news. Unfortunately, all 8 colonies are located in highly vulnerable area under current greenhouse gases emissions. The emperor penguin needs a 9 month stable fast-ice environment in order to breed. The adults arrive at the breeding site in March to April, lay eggs in May to June, 65 days later puppies are born and they will fledge by December to January. So they highly rely on sea ice extent and stability which depends on temperature, oceanic currents and wind. Many studies have projected a high decline in the population of this species until the end of the century. According to Jenouvrier et al. (2019) if greenhouse gases emission continues as it is right now, sea ice extent will decrease 48% leading to a loss of the most endangered breeding sites during the egg laying season. Scientists estimate that by the end of the century 80% of the colonies will decrease by 90% to quasi-extinction. Under the best-case scenario, which is a temperature rise of 1.5°C (34.7°F), the estimates are for a 31% loss in Emperor penguins population over the next three decades. A tan-colored leucistic Adélie penguin attracts the attention of a potential mate. Leucism is a rare condition resulting in a partial loss of pigmentation to the skin, hair, or in this case, feathers. Despite the loss of countershading camouflage (the black backs of these penguins make it more difficult for predators to spot them from above when they are swimming), this bird has made it to adulthood just fine. NOAA Fisheries affiliate Vladimir Burkanov discovered an albino fur seal on a recent research trip to the remote island of Tyuleny in the Sea of Okhotsk, Russia. The reddish-gold pup has very light colored eyes and pink flippers. It was born in July 2020. The only information about how rare this sighting is comes from literature published in 1958. At the time, scientist Vic Scheffer reported that the chance of encountering a fur seal with this coloration is 1 in 100,000. Its unclear whether this particular pup will be accepted by the colony and how well it will forage after it is weaned. According to Burkanov, the seal pup looked pretty healthy when he examined it, but animals with albinism typically experience problems with their eyesight. Scientists will look for the animal when they survey the rookery again next June. This Atlantic Grey Seal female & pup, hidden in a secluded cove on the Cornish Coast. . I spent an amazing time with these two, watching the young pup sucking on her mother’s rich milk, on average the pup puts on up-to 2Kgs a day (4.4Ibs) . At this time of year it’s vitally important to stay at least 100m away where possible, as they are prone to disturbance and the mother may abandon her young, or it could prevent vital feeding to take place. (Keep Dogs under strict control) . These images were taken at considerable distance in cover with a long lens as not to disturb them from their natural behaviour. . The grey seal is the larger of the two UK seal species, and if you catch a good look at them you’ll see how they got their scientific name Halichoerus grypus – it means hook-nosed sea pig! These mammals spend most of their time out at sea feeding on fish. They return to land to rest and can often be seen ‘hauled out’, lying on British beaches. Grey seals give birth to fluffy white pups in the autumn. These adorable pups stay on land until they have lost their white coats and trebled their body weight. . When you spend so much quality time both above and below the ice with charismatic and vulnerable species like emperor penguins, you get emotional when they are given protection. Several years ago, more than 650,000 square miles of the Ross Sea around Antarctica (an area the size of Spain and France combined) was protected under The Commission of the Conservation of Antarctic Marine Living Resources (#CCAMLR), an organization that works to conserve and protect wildlife that inhabits the Southern Ocean. This year’s CCAMLR annual meeting has already started, and members from 24 nations and the European Union have the opportunity to move forward three proposed Marine Protected Areas: Eastern Antarctica, the Weddell Sea, and the Antarctic Peninsula. Marine protected areas remain one of the most crucial tools for sustaining ecosystem health and curbing #climatechange.
