The highlights of this weekend for me were the Thank You card given by the farm workers in Manteca and meeting @astro_jose an inspiration to all of us Latinx folks especially 🇲🇽🇺🇸 proving that anything is possible. From Stockton field worker to NASA Astronaut, Mr. Hernandez shared the recipe for success his father gave him. To that recipe he added one of his own ingredients being resilience, never giving up. He shared he was rejected 11 times from NASA and was accepted on the 12 try✊🏽✊🏾👏🏽👨🚀 I know for a fact the youth who were front and center yesterday listening to this will remember his speach for the rest of their lives. Our Saturday drive-by bag pick up was a success! To kick off the fall 2020 season, we handed out RBO bags to our students and volunteers. El 18 de marzo de 2017 vecinos del lugar hallan el cadáver. El cuerpo de Lupita vestía una sudadera color verde, una playera lila con un hada de Disney y calcetas rojas. Las autoridades no pudieron identificar a la menor, quien mostraba maltrato físico y sexual. Nadie reclamó el cuerpo de la niña de las calcetitas rojas. Activistas solicitaron un retrato (foto de arriba) hablado de la víctima para localizar a sus familiares. Las autoridades difundieron el rostro y las características de la víctima. Al desconocer su nombre, siete meses después, las autoridades la llamaron Angelita. Sus restos fueron enterrados en el Parque Memorial de Naucalpan. Tras nueve meses de investigación, el fiscal de Justicia del Estado de México, Alejandro Gómez Sánchez, informó sobre la detención de los padres, quienes golpeaban y maltrataban a la menor constantemente. Un juez sentenció a 88 años de prisión a Yadira y a Pablo por el delito de feminicidio. On April 6, the California Judicial Council issued Emergency Rule 1, which prohibited courts in California from issuing summons for eviction cases (Unlawful Detainers) for the entire duration of the COVID-19 pandemic and for 90 days after the state of emergency. This order, in effect, is the only emergency eviction moratorium in the state, reducing the number of evictions in LA County from an average of 3,381 per month in 2019 to an average of 350 per month since Rule 1. This rule effectively halted the first tsunami wave of evictions during the COVID-19 pandemic. Why did the Judicial Council decide to rescind Rule 1? The Judicial Council is the rule-making body for the California courts, including the LA Superior Courts. In June, the Council nearly repealed Rule 1, but thanks to the collective efforts of tenants unions and allies, we were able to pressure the Council to postpone. Recently, the Council announced their decision to repeal Rule 1 on September 1st. What will happen on September 1st? We will see an eviction tsunami wave, potentially displacing over 491,000 families in LA County alone. This will increase homelessness, gentrification, and amid the current pandemic, the likelihood of a new wave of COVID cases. This is more than a housing crisis -- this puts public health at grave risk. 5.4 million tenants in CA are at risk of eviction early as 9/1 if we don’t #StopEvictions. #NewRule1 #NoEvictions #FlattenTheCurve No tenant should be evicted during a pandemic. Governor Gavin Newsom just signed two landmark legislation that I’m proud to be the author of #AB3121 and #AB3070 With these bills, California just became the first state in the nation to mandate the study and development of reparations and will begin to address racial bias in jury selection “California has historically led the country on civil rights. Yet, we have not come to terms with our state’s ugly past that allowed slaveholding within our borders, returned escaped slaves to their masters, and actually had slavery by another name in the form of a ‘contract labor’ system,” Weber said. “Neither have we effectively addressed our present justice system which allows prosecutors to bar African Americans from serving on juries. He has already made many friends, and his bright smile continues to bring joy to the kids around him at school. Because he was kidnapped and attacked at a young age in East Africa, he is currently behind in school. However, his teachers think he will catch up to his peers very fast! We are so inspired by Andrew’s perseverance. After Andrew was attacked by a trafficker, he lost his ability to walk. But some were back in newly-configured classrooms, wearing masks and sitting at spaced-out desks behind plexi-glass shields. WNYCs Karen Yi spent time at two schools: Middlesex County STEM Charter School in Perth Amboy, where 50% of parents wanted their kids to return to class for a full day, and Central Jersey College Prep in Somerset, where about 40% of parents opted for in-person instruction and an earlier dismissal.
