On Wednesdays, we read...wear...drink(!?!) pink! 🦩 This week, I read this wonderful book, and it honestly just made me so happy! The Black Flamingo follows Michael from childhood to university, a protagonist who is constantly struggling with his identity. He never feels like he fits in; at home, at school and then at university. His home life was a struggle due to his father being absent, and him not feeling like he had a strong connection to his mother (although you could tell it was there), but when he goes to university, he finds his place. His place to be anyone that he wants, and just show the world how he, The Black Flamingo, wants to be seen! This stunner is also written in verse, which is different to what I’m used to, but it was an incredibly fast and enjoyable read. I actually read this in a few hours on Sunday. It’s a beautiful book, and I highly recommend a read if you haven’t already🌺🌸🌷 - @gracefulchapters on Instagram

It’s our last day in Florida. This trip has been essential for our hearts, minds, souls, energy.... People have messaged me, “where are your funny videos. why aren’t you dancing. I miss your silly stories. “ Well, here we go. I am a very open book. I love that about myself. I operate on a level where I feel most comfortable letting people in. And I prefer people to offer the same to me....I know that isn’t always possible, and that’s alright! I get it. BUT. Sometimes life takes over. Unfortunate things happen. Real life (shit) situations come in and that’s when someone like “Robyn”....one of the playground Lords of Instagram retracts. I love this area. Social media brings me a lot of joy, laughter, knowledge. But when I need to focus on myself and my loved ones, I need to retract. Instagram is real life for me, but it’s also not real life for me. And I hope you all respect that. So.....my father in law has had a house in Belleair, FL for over a decade. This place has always been our “reset”/“recharge”. This trip was so incredibly needed. It tuned me in. It changed things. I’m so grateful - for family, for health, for love, for the future. I’m grateful for my legs, my ability to move, my smile, my hair, my speech, my hearing, my comprehension.....the list goes on. Don’t take advantage of one moment that you are breathing. It could be gone in a second. I love you all. I encourage you to love one another. This morning I received yet another message from someone going through a divorce. She asked how I was getting through mine with a smile on my face because she feels so sad and alone. That gutted me. I don’t often address this part of my life here, but if it makes others feel less alone, maybe it makes sense to do so? Sharing our experiences empowers us. I put on a smile on for this guy right here. And I try to be positive on this page. While these images, videos and ideas are fun to share and true experiences (like this one pictured last weekend on the beach💙), naturally they do not represent my WHOLE life. Last week marked one year that I started this process of building a new life. And the process is not over. To those messaging me about divorce, domestic abuse and being a single parent, I’m sorry if it seemed like we do not have the same issues, feelings, struggles and grief. We do. NOTHING about this transition is easy- it’s financially and physically depleting - even paralyzing at moments. But I’m learning those moments do pass. Some days are better than others, but EVERY DAY we are one step closer to the other side💪🏼 You are not alone. I’m rooting for you to come out stronger and wiser. It’s my birthday! When I was a kid my parents had to shave my head because I had lice. Many treated me as if it were a sad occasion and said “I still looked pretty” to encourage and make me feel better. What they didn’t know is that I was GLOWING. I loved this “error” and relished in the feel of the wind through each short little fibre. I didn’t feel short hair was masculine or feminine. I just felt it was me. The true form of expression I felt most comfortable in. It was joy. Fast forward to the now and I find myself entangled in everything from environmental to sociopolitical justice. (See my story for the year in review). Yet entangled is not a hairbrush or comb. The efficiency of short hair has lead beyond gender expectations- and gains me approximately 11.5 minutes a day (according to stats in Cosmo) in less grooming time. And I get to spend that time on You. Responding. Holding. Loving. Being present. It’s not a statement of my desire to be treated “like a man”. I’ll always desire to be treated like a me. Accountable to myself and my own actions. Not the history of those who have come before me. It’s just an extension of truth and comfort. While others are not necessarily comfortable with my existence as it is- I don’t equate my comfort to theirs. Their comments, questions and curiosities don’t factor into my own empowerment. I may lose them. But I’ve got You. And You are everything. This year I’ve had the privilege to listen. Learn. Grow. It’s been painful at times and humbling. There was a period I wasn’t sure I wanted to fight through it last year. But after so much time alone a community came together this year. Even when I laid myself bare to the world there were those who’s love was unwavering. Because of You I lived. I fought. I loved. Thank You. Thank You. Because of You and Your support I’ve felt empowered to say over 20k “I love You”s. I had over 800 people come out privately, over 8500 DMs (even oppositional) responded to. Over 4000 calling to the hotline and almost 880 hugs given this year. (Pre-Covid). This new year I am grateful to spend with You. I was skeptical when my daughter chose a summer beach hat to top off her fall-ready outfit. But man does she pull it off! Seeing my toddler’s personality in full bloom tends to make me emotional and reflective. I remember the throes of the postpartum period, my own mental health struggles, the torturous lack of sleep. I remember people telling me “it doesn’t really get better, it just gets different” (a well intentioned oversimplification that can leave moms with PPD and PPA feeling hopeless so please be mindful!) I now get what they meant- there are ways in which things are so much easier (did I mention sleep??) but there’s a whole world of emotional regulation, autonomy, exploration, and identify formation that suddenly finds itself at the forefront of every daily activity. It seems like all of a sudden I’ve found myself raising the single most adorable tiny human on the planet, who also happens to have an intense opinion about everything and is eager to express it. It’s a joyous, challenging, amazing and overwhelming mess. Sometimes it’s hard to remember where her feelings end and mine begin. Some days I just want to throw emotional regulation out the window and have a tantrum myself (how satisfying would it be to end a terrible zoom conference by screaming, “no! I don’t like that!” and throwing your computer across the room?) Some moments, though, it’s just pure light. Of course she chose a neon swim hat to match her autumn outfit. What else would complete the mommy and me coordinated neon legging/sweatshirt combo straight out of an 80s workout video? Its a messy journey, but one that lets me support a brilliant, hilarious, and stylish human take her full form. This relationship isnt just a proxy for parents education level or socioeconomic status - books especially benefit children from disadvantaged families. 📚 its never to early to start reading to your kids! When you read together, you nurture language skills, literacy development and your relationship with your child. Early brain development happens through reciprocal relationships with loving caregivers and sitting together with a book is a perfect vehicle for that 📚 ✅ Make reading fun! For infants, point to and name pictures in books For young children, ask them questions or have them complete rhymes ✅ Dont stress if youre not getting through the story with your little ones! 2-year-olds have a short attention span. Hello 🤗⠀ Lil life update for y’all. ⠀ We moved to the beach. ⠀ We’ve both been hustling 6-7 days a week. 18 hour work days. It’s been tough. ⠀ Both still dieting, hard. ⠀ Both still training, hard. ⠀ Two weeks ago, after moving house, negotiating an employment contract, my body had a slight freak out. ⠀ ⠀ I didn’t want to train. ⠀ I didn’t want to track my food. ⠀ I put on 2kg in a week. (for me that is a lot especially when I’m on a diet). ⠀ Plain and simple, just wasn’t happy. ⠀ ⠀ So, wtf did I do? Sounds simple but I bloody stopped doing things that I hated. ⠀ ⠀ I prioritised a good ass sleep. ⠀ I stopped giving to unnecessary situations. ⠀ I didn’t train a body part because ‘I had to’. ⠀ I went for swims. ⠀ I ate food that I enjoyed. ⠀ I said no more. ⠀ I laughed more. ⠀ I trained my body in a way it felt good for me. ⠀ I gave more to my clients, friends and family. ⠀ I did what I wanted to do. ⠀ ⠀ After doing this for literally a few days, I lost 3kg. The stress my body was fighting and holding onto had gone. ⠀ ⠀ It’s so important to listen to your body. ⠀ Eat the hot chips with your fish at the beach. ⠀ Have a conversation with your partner without being distracted or forward thinking. ⠀ Have an extra sleep in. ⠀ ⠀ You don’t have to always be perfect and that is really ok. ⠀ ⠀ Xx - @becccx on Instagram

Look, mom! I’m a cartoon in a book! It was a pleasure writing this excerpt for @thebaristaleague ‘s Guide to Planning Better Events. Who would have known that in-person events would be all but cancelled this year, and that nearly everything has shifted online. My piece is pretty specific to IRL events, but there’s some decent info in there, if you ask me. And events will happen again, y’all. Here’s my stack of all the games I’ve picked up in August. It’s been a sick month of pickups for sure. Not pictured are a Gamecube console and a Dreamcast, both with a bunch of extras. I’ve also scored an Xbox One S and Nintendo Switch Lite which I both sold to make up for what I paid for these goodies I meant to keep in my collection. Fossil hunting 🦕🐚 The boys have been asking to go to fossil beach (more commonly known as Llantwit Major beach 😉) since my mother mentioned it a few weeks ago, so we made the most of a sunny day to go and explore. There were rocky bits to climb over, big round stones like boulders (or the rock trolls from Frozen 😂), and stretches of flat square stones with rock pools ... we barely saw any sand! The boys got to work looking for fossils straight away, and thankfully we found a couple of little ones to keep them interested. Then Santi came across this whopper of an ammocite ... imagine how big the whole fossil would have been! We had a break for a cuppa and an ice cream, then went for a wander up the cliff on the coastal path. While we were there, some huge rocks came crashing down onto the beach, which of course the boys thought was great! It made a nice change from our usual beach days, and they’ve already asked to go back. Always the sign of a good day out! - @whatalanadid on Instagram

For me, Mothers Day is about reflecting and acknowledging. I fell pregnant by accident with Sophia, but she was destined to be my greatest teacher. I reflect back on the last 8 years and see how far I have come. Solo parenting is an honor but one that stretches you beyond belief in every way. But if I wasn’t forced to stretch I would never have grown, become so strong and resourceful. So I acknowledge that through the incredible heart wrenching challenges - family law court, keeping a roof over our heads and food on the table, my own health issue from the overwhelming and never ending stress, I truly acknowledge that I would not change a thing. Freddo Frog Just turned 90! but he wouldn’t of existed at all if it wasn’t for the hunch of a young factory worker. Harry, 18, was working at MacRobertson’s Chocolate Factory in Fitzroy when the boss marched in, determined to launch a new chocolate to celebrate the company’s 50th year. He was considering a mouse, but Harry suggested the treat wouldn’t sell “because women and children are afraid of mice”. Sir Macpherson Robertson asked what he might suggest instead, and Harry suggested a frog. He reasoned that after school and during the holidays, children and their families enjoyed catching tadpoles – which would later grow into frogs — in nearby ponds. This adorable outfit is hilarious— and important. I love watching my toddler play in her scrub pajamas. It honestly looks like she is coming off a long call at the hospital and conjures plenty of residency memories of my falling asleep on my couch in scrubs, cold pizza in hand, before I made it to shower or even to bed. Here’s why it’s important- it reminds me of all the hard work I put in to becoming a pediatrician, with my only goal to protect kids, promote child health and help families. #pandemicparenting is overwhelming. Your pediatricians are here to help! Covid didn’t cancel vaccine preventable diseases, including flu, which cause deaths and disability if vaccines are skipped or delays. Tomorrow I’m calling our pediatrician to make the first available appointment for my daughters flu shot. Her dad and I will get them at cvs or through work, whichever comes sooner. I declare a birthday...By order, of the peaky fucking blinders! As if this is the first request I’ve ever had for a PB cake. Bit of a story behind this one, and I’m not telling it looking for praise, but because it’s just nice to be nice. A lovely gentleman contacted me asking if I did payment plans as he wanted to surprise his GF with a cake (her birthday was at the beginning of lockdown), and to collect the cake once he’d paid up. COVID 19 has left him unemployed and suffering with bad anxiety and depression- making it impossible for him to get a job. The fact that he was willing to use what bit of money he had to surprise her with a cake of her favourite tv show (mine also) got me it did, so I gifted it to him. He was so happy.
