This is me, just finishing an Emergency department shift last night. Yes, I look tired. It was a long one...scared, angry, even violent patients met with care and compassion by a great group of #NHS staff. On the journey home, in the early hours, I passed through #ParliamentSquare where #BlackLivesMatter placards & #Protestors were still present ... I’ve been thinking about this situation for a while. I can’t say it all here, but, whilst we’re protesting, whilst we’re making our voices heard, we need to start working towards a future of #understanding & #unity. This requires some pain & sacrifice on all sides, but it’ll be worth it. It gives me hope that it’s not just black people outraged by what’s going on. When they hear “ Black Lives Matter!” They hear “Black Lives Matter too!” Not “Only Black Lives Matter!” as some want to hear. The rioters, & the media that focuses on them exclusively, will continue to feed each other. But they must not be allowed to hijack the real message.... #Covid19 has separated us all for a while, the tragic death of #Georgefloyd is an opportunity for us to really start thinking about how we can come together “Darkness cannot drive out darkness, only light can do that. Although it hasn’t been the most conventional way of starting work that we would have normally expected 😅 This week has been packed with combination of virtual and face to face study days as part of our induction. We are not expected to see patients for a while as there are a lot of regulations that have been put in place since COVID, which means there are many things that we need to go over first, before doing any treatment! ⁣ ⁣ At first I was a bit disappointed with this as I was eager to start seeing patients again and didn’t want to miss out 😆 However, after coming to terms with it more.. I feel it’s best for us to be slowly introduced back into dentistry. Afterall there is no rush! I have really enjoyed the study days so far especially the amalgam and the endo day run by @vishandaaron they are both really good teachers! Thought I would be very rusty after six months of no dentistry but I surprised myself 😂 Next week we have composite study day and medical emergency training to look forward to 🎊⁣ ⁣ I also wanted to say 𝐠𝐨𝐨𝐝 𝐥𝐮𝐜𝐤 to everyone about to start dental school! Growing up as a left-handed pitcher in West Texas, Hunt Batjer, M.D., dreamed of taking the mound for the @yankees. Brain surgeon was his backup plan. Drafted out of high school by the @orioles – which already had a deep pitching staff – he took his father’s advice and accepted a baseball scholarship to @utaustintx. But a rotator cuff injury ended his baseball career, and he applied to medical school at #UTSouthwestern. Now internationally recognized as a leading cerebrovascular surgeon, Dr. Batjer is the 2020 recipient of the Harvey Cushing Medal, the highest honor bestowed by the American Association of Neurological Surgeons (AANS). “This is a wonderful honor that in my field is somewhere between a lifetime achievement award and our Neurosurgical Hall of Fame,” said Dr. Batjer, Chair and Professor of Neurological Surgery, part of UT Southwesterns Peter O’Donnell Jr. Brain Institute. In addition to his never-ending passion for cerebrovascular problems, Dr. Batjer has focused much of his career on traumatic brain injury, particularly in sports. He spent eight years as co-Chair of the @nfl Head, Neck, and Spine Committee, which developed the league’s #concussion protocol. “It was through hard work in that arena that we were able to enact 40 rules changes that further defined and protected defenseless players,” he said. “One of those was moving the restraining line 5 yards forward, which reduced concussions on kickoffs by 40 percent.” Dr. Batjer continues to work with @uiltexas, the governing body for public middle, junior high, and high schools in Texas. The UIL’s Medical Advisory Committee oversees safety issues for +1 million student-athletes. He came aboard the UTSW faculty in 1983 and served for 13 years before joining @nufeinbergmed as the founding Chair of Neurological Surgery. A little over a month down as an attending. I have truly been a “black cloud” in every sense of the word during this first month and I have been getting my share of very sick patients. Believe it that the learning curve continues beyond residency training and that experience continues to be the greatest teacher of all. It is important to continue to have an inquisitive mind and to always seek to get better. Luckily for me, about half of my shifts are with residents who continue to ask important questions, who seek guidance, and who challenge me each and every single day in my practice. I learn from them and hope that I am teaching them something too. It has been an exciting, rewarding month and I’m looking forward to the months ahead! #whyoptometry Seems like a question we all get often. I’m joining @dr.hardeep.kataria in explaining my why. To me, this is a 2 part answer. Kicking it back to the start of my optometry school journey, my why was for a few “simple” reasons. 1) The ability to help people with a very important aspect of their lives in a person to person setting was something very important to me. 2) Having a career where if I wanted, I could get involved in crunching numbers and business details, fulfilling my desire of being more than just a doctor. 3) Great work life balance. After going through Optometry school and now starting my second year, my #whyoptometry has evolved to so much more. You can take this career anywhere. 1) Being primary eye care providers - Your eyes functions as the window to your body’s health. Detecting and managing conditions such as Diabetes, thyroid eye disease, detecting tumours and so much more. 2) The ability to do whatever you want with your career. With Optometry, the doors are endless. Becoming involved with your community, giving back to at need populations, being involved with “politics” and pushing the profession forward are my why’s. Meet Lawson Enokekwa (@enokekwa) - 3rd year medical student at Medical College of Georgia. September is Sickle Cell Awareness month and Lawson shares his WHY driving him to be a top notch doctor. ---------------------- For the past 24 (now 25) years I have lived with Hgb SS sickle cell anemia. I remember the psychological impact this disease had on me as a child; how I was unable to participate in certain everyday activities without questioning whether or not it could trigger yet another crippling sickle cell crisis. I remember asking my family and God why I was made this way, and having to come to terms with my existence at such a young age. But I’ve realized these experiences were necessary to push me to my calling: medicine. My aim is to become a hematologist/oncologist in order to help other sickle cell patients overcome the symptoms associated with this disease. Although I still have many things to accomplish, I’m excited to continue my journey towards becoming a healthcare provider, and at 25 I’d say I’m well on my way. ---------------------- Thank you Lawson for being a huge source of inspiration for those coming behind you. You may have seen pictures of male doctors wearing #hertimeisnow masks going around in social media. September is recognized as #womeninmedicine💪 month in an attempt to promote equality and recognition in medicine for women. For this purpose, American Medical Women Association @AMWAdoctors is partnering with #hertimeisnow to bring awareness to gender gaps in medicine. As a minority female physician, I have been through my fair share of gender discrimination in medicine. I grew up in Iran where women have restricted legal rights. But I was lucky enough to belong to a generation whose parents pushed hard to make sure their daughters get the highest education. This was the way our parents fought the oppressive laws against women. At medical school, we had few female attending role models. Similar to other arenas, female physicians were not taken seriously, and the general belief was that “female physicians are incompetent”. When people wanted to go see a doctor, they made sure they see that “male doctor”. This along with lots of other wrongdoings to women, made me lose my confidence as a young physician. I became a serious imposter doubting everything about my abilities as a physician. It took me several years of living abroad, going through the best trainings in Germany and USA, gaining many achievements, and persistent work on my mindset to restore that lost confidence. I didn’t get it easy, but today I’m a confident gastroenterologist and looking back, I would say it was all worth it. I recently left my first attending job after fellowship and I was so touched when my patients filled up my limited appointments on the last day, just to come and thank me in person!! This meant so much to me and made me so proud of my path. Today I’m a different person and live under different circumstances, but that doesn’t mean I don’t face discrimination as a female physician anymore. The challenge is different, but REAL. It’s time to support each other and fight for equality and recognition, no matter where we are through this journey. Meet Tamar Chukrun! Tamar was born in Israel and moved to the US when she was 6. From there she grew up outside of DC. Her mom worked in HR, then Social Work, and she is now a Therapist. Her father went to film school and is now a product manager. Tamar also has a pet cat, and a younger brother. Tamar went to the UNC Gillings School of Public Health, pursuing a bachelors of science in public health with a concentration in nutrition. After graduation, Tamar worked as a housing specialist for a non-profit supporting people transitioning out of poverty. During undergrad, Tamar did nutritional epidemiology research in Cebu, Philippines. During her trip, she became diving certified. After graduation, Tamar took a 2-year break and solo-backpacked through southeast Asia. She returned back to the Philippines, but also visited Laos, Cambodia and Vietnam. There, she hiked, dove, and motorbiked to her heart’s content. Tamar’s favorite part of traveling is meeting new people, eating new foods, and getting immersed in local culture. During her trip, Tamar substitute taught English in Hanoi to fund her travels and to really get to know Vietnamese culture. Tamar spent her second gap year doing clinical research here at Duke. Tamar is very passionate about service work and she is very socially active. She is currently in the Primary Care Leadership Track here at Duke, and also the Co-President of Root Causes— a student group focused on creative innovative solutions addressing social drivers of health. Tamar was also invited to give a speech about the humanitarian imperative to expand NC medicaid at the NAACP’s Moral March in Raleigh. Aside from her interest in traveling, motorbikes and scuba diving, Tamar danced all through high school and college, she skis and is a photographer. Tamar is very confident, empathetic and driven. She is passionate about changing structural barriers in healthcare and society so that everyone can be healthy meet their basic human needs. Her devout belief is that our whole society is richer when people can contribute their gifts and skills to the collective good— and that’s what drives her to become a physician! Have you ever heard the name Vivien Thomas. He is the African American high school graduate that helped pioneer the field of open heart surgery at Johns Hopkins many decades ago. There were a few films made about his life, “Something The Lord Made” on HBO, and “Partners of The Heart” on PBS. If you haven’t read about him or watched either of these, I urge you to do so. It’s an important part of American History and the History of Modern Medicine . . When I trained at Hopkins, they created four colleges, luckily I was placed in Vivien Thomas College. My previous research mentor, Peter Agre, also attended Hopkins for medical school, and he knew Vivien Thomas personally. He stated that the one thing everyone knew about Vivien Thomas, is that “he walked around with the most immaculate white coat on campus.” I remember that comment vividly, and it was even echoed in one of the movies above. Now that I am a physician, I have remained cognizant about presentation and appearance. Part of being a professional is looking professional. So in that regard, I have to take this moment and say thank you to @medelita_gram. This Osler fitted Blazer-style white coat seems like something Vivien Thomas would have worn. I mean, if I’m gonna be in this fight against covid19, at least I will look good during the fight 😆 . . SOLIDARIEDADE Doação de Álcool 70% para comunidade haitiana em Cuiabá-MT No município de Cuiabá, Mato Grosso (Brasil), neste final de semana, foram doados mais de 150 frascos com álcool líquido para famílias haitianas residentes no bairro Parque Cuiabá. Cada casa recebeu uma unidade, a qual será reabastecida quando finalizada a carga. A ação é uma iniciativa do IFMT (Instituto Federal de Ciências e Tecnologia do estado do Mato Grosso), campus Bela Vista, em parceria com o Conselho Regional de Química (CRQ-MT), e conta com o apoio da Prefeitura Municipal de Cuiabá. A entrega aconteceu a partir do contato feito com a Associação de Defesa dos Haitianos Imigrantes e Migrantes em Mato Grosso (ADHIMI-MT), a qual se encarregou da organização e entrega das doações neste último sábado (28). When the results for my COVID test came two days later, doctors were doubtful about my reaction. I told them not to worry since Im a doctor myself. I knew that I could handle whatever the situation might be. Thats when they revealed that I was COVID-19 positive. As soon as the news spread, many of our neighbours panicked. The city administration council put up posters outside our door. People clicked photos and shot videos of my house. They shared it with my name, address, and personal details on different WhatsApp groups. Since people love to gossip on WhatsApp, ugly stories about me started circulating in social media. Even the news media put out the wrong kinds of stories. Despite going straight to the hospital from the airport, I had to be the victim of social media hatred. I didnt even go home to collect my personal belongings to make sure that I didnt transmit the virus to anyone. Thankfully, I started recovering and, after a few days, tested negative. But the hounding didnt stop after I was back home. I knew that going back home will be an unpleasant experience. Therefore, to avoid attention from neighbours and media, I insisted on going home late at night. Not just me but my entire family had to experience the harassment. My younger brother didnt step out of the house for two months. Neither did I. I would only step out during the night to avoid people. When I step out, I can still sense the eerie stares and gossip. It is like a bad dream - Im all alone. People refuse to hear when I plead to them that I didnt do anything wrong. The only way we can fight this pandemic is with the right balance of precaution and empathy. Yes, we need to be careful. But we also shouldnt let our fears overpower humanity within us”. I believe there is a balance needed, strength training should NEVER go under-looked and definitely needs to take precedent in an off-season program. Hi everyone! My name is Taylor Ross, and I am a PA-C working in Urgent Care. When I applied to PA school I was told by an admissions counselor I should wait and my chances of getting in were low because I was applying late in the cycle (October). I applied anyway and got interviews at each program I applied to, and was accepted after my first interview at my top school. When I graduated I was 5 months pregnant and had zero job prospects after submitting at least 80 applications. I had my FIRST job interview the day I was scheduled to be induced, and I got my job offer the day I was discharged. What is primary vaginismus? Primary vaginismus is when vaginal penetration has never been achieved ever. So this means you have never been able to put in a tampon, have penetrative intercourse or digital penetration. What is secondary vaginismus? Secondary vaginismus is when vaginal penetration has happened before, but is no longer possible, potentially due to factors such as gynecologic surgery, abuse, trauma, menopause or radiation. When people have pain with intercourse this is called Dyspareunia- just the medical term for it. It is often confused with vaginismus. People can have painful intercourse for many reasons that are not vaginismus (like endometriosis). Vaginismus is an involuntary tightening of the vaginal muscles which makes penetration difficult or impossible. Many people who have vaginismus often have a fear of vaginal penetration and decreased sexual desire related to penetration. Which is not surprising! My vaginismus patients are a motivated bunch seeking help! I am incredibly proud of my patients when they make progress with their treatment! Its daunting to work with a therapist, use dilators and suppositories and have injections to an area that is sensitive. To all the women struggling with vaginismus do not give up!! I see so much success so often! It’s truly amazing to see when women are able to have a sexually satisfying experience with or without penetration! (Which is key to remember that penetrative intercourse is not the only way to have sex.) You are not broken! Hola my name is Michael, I am a plastic surgeon and pediatric hand surgeon. My parents were from Lima, Peru and brought us to the U.S. for the opportunity (I was born in the U.S.), so I agree that it’s worthwhile to highlight the strengths that workplace diversity can provide to help improve healthcare access and quality 💪🏽💪🏽💪🏽⠀ ⠀ What does it mean to be Latino in healthcare, specifically in medicine/surgery?⠀ ⠀ - It means knowing that Latinos are underrepresented in medicine (9.8% of medical school matriculants were Latino/a last year versus 18% of the U.S. population.. keep in mind that this has been lower in the past and the workforce is much lower).⠀ ⠀ - It means that when I was in community college there were very few Latinos that pursued medicine. The obstacles are real especially if socioeconomically disadvantaged.⠀ ⠀ - It means that when I was at UC Berkeley there were very few Latinos that pursued medicine. I remember being one of a handful in classrooms of over 300 students.⠀ ⠀ - It means that when I was in a California medical school I watched the number of Latinos accepted drop over the years. The state of California is almost 40% Latino! It also means that I have always strived to provide outreach for premeds from underrepresented backgrounds.⠀ ⠀ - It means when I was applying in residency there was literally a hand full of us.. less than one hand in the entire country.⠀ ⠀ - It means that in my fields of plastic surgery and hand surgery I am a unicorn 🦄 (or zebra? 🦓 or burro 🐴???)⠀ ⠀ - It means that every time I met a potential Latino/a mentor in surgery, I would get very excited because it help me envision myself being them.⠀ ⠀ - It means that I can speak Spanish to my patients and relieve the wide eyes when I say ¿prefieres español?⠀ ⠀ - It means I have had many patients say “eres un orgullo” I am proud/privledged in in what I get to do.⠀ ⠀ - It means that I am a human being and appreciate and value of diversity in every sense of the word. - It means that I decided to be on social media to be an advocate for diversity and helping the underserved.⠀ Know a Latino Doc? Ninja Nerds!!   As you all know we just started posting videos again recently. The reason we were not posting very much was multifactorial. Por isso separei algumas dicas que serviram para mim e que acho que podem ajudar vocês também: 1 – Crie uma rotina Mesmo quando estava fazendo apenas atendimentos virtuais e trabalhando de casa, manter uma rotina de trabalho foi fundamental. Acordar, treinar, tomar café e trocar de roupa para trabalhar é uma sequência diária que me ajudou a manter o foco. 2 – Separe o local de trabalho e o de lazer Se for possível, escolha um local na casa específico para o trabalho/estudo. Dê preferência a um cômodo isolado e silencioso, onde possa se concentrar com o mínimo de interrupções, e converse com os familiares para respeitarem esse momento. 3 – Se informe (mas sem excesso) Nesse momento, manter a saúde mental é fundamental (e não apenas para a sua produtividade, mas para o seu equilíbrio em geral). Por isso, tenha cuidado para não consumir muita informação e ficar sobrecarregado. Busque apenas o conteúdo necessário para se proteger e cuidar de seus familiares. 4 – Mantenha-se conectado com seus colegas de trabalho Aqui na Clínica Dr Fábio Mascarenhas trabalhamos em equipe e não seria diferente durante a quarentena.
