It is time for another history lesson! Today’s lesson is on Chet Helms, known as “The Father of The Summer of Love”. Chet was a producer and an organizer, as well as helped stage the free concerts and other events at the Golden Gate Park during The Summer of Love. He was the founder and manager of Big Brother and The Holding Company, and was the one to recruit Janis Joplin into the band. Chet was also the first to produce psychedelic light shows at venues such as the Avalon Ballroom and The Fillmore. When he arrived in San Francisco in 1962, Chet began to arrange jam sessions in the basement of 1060 Page Street (in Haight-Ashbury), charging 50 cents to attend, making this his first work within concert production and promotion. In February 1966, Chet, along with The Family Dog (a hippie commune) formed Family Dog Productions, and began to promote concerts at The Fillmore Auditorium, alternating weekends with the young music promoter, Bill Graham. Chet played a key role in introducing Bill Graham to the Haight-Ashbury district of San Francisco. As the concerts became more popular, conflicts arose between the two, and Chet moved to the Avalon Ballroom, at 1269 Sutter Street. In June 1966, Big Brother and The Holding Company had their debut. Between April 1966 and November 1968, Family Dog Productions hosted concerts which mixed different genre artists, including rock, Indian, blues and soul. Some of the artists included in these concerts were, Country Joe & The Fish, Muddy Waters, Big Mama Thornton, The Doors, Buffalo Springfield, The Byrds and Ali Akbar Khan. Occasionally, these concerts would feature speakers, Timothy Leary, Stephen Gaskin, amongst many other infamous counterculture icons. The Phoenix Rainbow as the Entrance to Center Camp at this years Burning Man!
