- Octopuses lay 56,000 eggs at a time. The mother spends six months so devoted to protecting the eggs that she doesn’t eat. The babies are the size of a grain of rice when they’re born.
Seen here in the central highlands of Peninsular Malaysia, Rafflesia kerrii is the second largest species of Rafflesia, with blooms measuring 70 to 110 cm across, making it the second largest single flower on Earth (people often confuse that statistic with Amorphophallus titanum, which is a giant compound inflorescence bearing hundreds of tiny flowers). Only Rafflesia arnoldii of Sumatra exceeds its dimensions, along with R. tuan-mudae of Borneo, which some regard as the same species. I was guided to this bloom by an elder of the Temiar tribe, a welcoming and genial group comprising a minority of Malaysias indigenous orang asli people.⠀⠀ .⠀⠀ Rafflesia are endophytic holoparasites, deriving all of their carbon and nutritive needs from their Tetrastigma host vines, in addition to living entirely within the tissues of their hosts. Lets catch up with the Grass Snake before it hibernates for winter - what are they up to right now? Heres a fantastic shot of the UKs biggest snake before it hibernates. These slithery, swimming, secretive snakes will be finding safe places to stay for the October - April (ish) hibernation period, and some might still be about. This ones in water, but theyre more likely to be on land in the Autumn. Theyll be feeding on amphibians mostly, though will occasionally catch a small mammal or bird, and eat more fish in Spring. Eggs are all laid and have hatched, so all thats really left is to get cosy somewhere! But where? Some favourite spots for a long snooze include compost heaps, fallen trees, tree roots and rabbit warrens. Anywhere thats a bit warmer and more humid suits them well.
