Hello! Ive been paying taxes atleast since I began working as a MCDONALDS employee when I was 15 years old. I literally needed a workers permit, and to have a signed note from my mother, just so I could wake up at 4am on a Saturday & make $8.65 an hour and Ive been paying and doing my taxes ever since. As my wages have increased, and as someone who has worked as an educator I have increasingly been taxed at around 33 percent of what Ive grossed. So with that in mind - My unemployment benefits, the little bit of money gained weekly $15.00 an hour x 40 hours $600 dollars is really nothing compared to what Ive paid into it, and what other countries have done for their people. Fam, whatever the fuck you do with that money is your business. If you are currently an #educator, #instructor, #teacher and you fear for your life, you should be able to stay home and stay safe. You should not be blamed for a government that has failed you, the citizen who have continued to pay your taxes! You should not be made to blame because the government is willing to sacrifice 150,000 children, most likely black and brown students, for them to continue gutting education. Oh! GH is increased while fasting for the purpose of mobilizing fat stores (breaking down fat to supply the body with energy since it’s not getting it from food) . . Is GH anabolic? Yes, particularly in fed state (at energy balance) . . In the fed state), GH exerts most of its anabolic effects by stimulating the production of insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1) (PMID = 23392098) . . IGF-1 is a very anabolic hormone . . So, if GH is anabolic (& it primarily manifests this through IGF-1), & fasting (not eating food) increases GH production, we can assume that Fasting = Muscle Growth? . . No! . . Caloric restriction disrupts the GH:IGF-1 axis, such that increasing GH secretion doesn’t stimulate IGF-1 production (PMID = 24363451) . . These alterations occur in a dose-dependent fashion, such that higher levels of caloric restriction produce greater increases in GH & reductions in IGF-1 compared to a small caloric deficit (doi.org/10.1210/jc.2002-020369) . . Even in resistance trained individuals a severe calorie deficit caused anabolic resistance (high GH but suppressed IGF-1 levels) (PMID = 32236752) . . People who think that fasting can increase muscle mass need to use a little bit of logic . . If no nutrients are being ingested, where are the substrates going to come from to build this new muscle? Out of thin air? From fat? Fat can’t be converted to protein/muscle. . . If you’re going to build muscle, you need nutrients (particularly protein) . . What about intermittent fasting? We are a group of Lebanese Trans and non-binary folks and their friends who are connected between Beirut and Berlin. Our aim is to raise 6000 to 10,000 EUR to support unemployed Transgender and non-binary individuals with no income in Beirut with whom we are connected. The 4th of August disastrous explosion that caused over 300.000 to become homeless, is hitting the Transgender and non-binary community specially hard. This explosion is happening in the middle of a horrendous economic crisis, a pandemic, a corrupt government lead by criminals and more. Being Transgender/nonbinary and not legally employed makes it impossible to access health care, save work, masks, food, water, sleeping places and more. More so in the aftermath of this catastrophe and disaster and the dire overall economic situation. In summary, when you are doing light exercise, the body is fueling that activity with predominantly fat stores (but it is also important to know that when you do light exercise you are not burning very many TOTAL CALORIES) . . When you’re doing intense exercise, the body is fueling that activity with predominantly carbohydrate stores (and it is important to know that when you do heavier exercise you are burning more TOTAL CALORIES, but you may not be able to do this for very long without getting extremely tired and out of breath) . . What type of exercise is best for fat loss? My answer to this question is to start with what you like to do. Do you HATE running? Then don’t run. Do you enjoy riding bike? Then do that. We should be taking money *away* from cops, not giving them more so they can spend it on “training.” It’s easy to fall into the trap of half-measures, but we don’t actually have to live this way. We can imagine a society without police, and we can fight for it today. Abolition can’t wait. • NOTE: I am NOT an expert but I am learning from and am happy to direct you to those who are. The points I make here are (very succinctly) applied from writings by Angela Davis, Mariame Kaba, Ruth Wilson Gilmore, Alex Vitale, and the work of @byp100, @criticalresistance, @mvmnt4blklives, @blackvisionscollective, and @reclaimtheblock. There is a lot of research that went into their ideas that could not be captured in this instagram graphic (e.g. data on why reform measures like civilian oversight, implicit bias training, etc. historically do not work + increase policing, solutions to dismantle powerful and corrupt barriers like police unions that make firing cops difficult). • While Campaign Zero’s ultimate goals may not be mutually exclusive from those of abolition, these types of half-measures very easily become tools of distraction from the safer and more just future that we want. There is a lot of rhetoric around what is “obtainable” and “immediate,” as though these must inherently cater to reformism. They don’t have to be. Ask yourself whether these eight proposals (several of which are already implemented in cities like Minneapolis) are the actions we should be demanding given the unprecedented momentum of this time. • Our goal should be to defund, disarm, and dismantle this institution, and our efforts should be directed towards measures that can accomplish it. Don’t let rhetoric around incrementality convince you that we can’t push for bigger, more meaningful demands right now.
