Officers of the night shift answered a call Thursday night in reference to a dispute between a couple going through hard times and finding it difficult to feed their two toddlers and one infant. Knowing this, those officers came together and purchased food for the family so they wouldn’t go another night hungry and reached out to FISH who provided the family with more food and diapers for their baby. Tears were shed and many moments were made. The family has wished to stay anonymous and pictures of them will not be posted out of respect. That means whatever you use them for will last a hell of a lot longer than organic materials like paper, canvas, or wood. In this new post serie, we indicate and suggest those elements that are indispensable when the need to keep in bug out mode exceeds the 72 hours for which most of these emergency supplies were designed. Let’s take a break from negativity and talk about something cool. About 6 weeks ago I made myself actually sick thinking about a very specific population of kids and how they’d be impacted by virtual learning. And then I had an idea. The Beaufort County School District office has a gated area that is locked called “the shoe box”. It’s where donated supplies are stored. The district serves *on average* 300 children who qualify as homeless (that’s average before impacts of COVID). Three hundred. 300 kids in our community y’all. The district’s social workers use “the shoe box” to supply those 300 kids with resources. The school supply and food drive we started literally filled the shoe box. I’ve made 4 trips to drop off supplies. District employees have met me at the loading dock outside of the shoebox with flat bed carts. This is a very small representation of what y’all have donated to those 300 kids. I say small representation because—- I started dropping off 3 weeks ago. Individual families have already come HERE DIRECTLY to get stuff YALL donated. Social workers have already made deliveries. I have taken car fulls to Help. And my garage still has boxes about 3 rows deep. The remaining donations will continue to serve as shoe box stock where families can come and social workers can deliver from, and some will be packaged in big clear Rubbermaid bins and delivered to E-learning sites. Thank you from the most sincere place of my heart. I wish I could write every single one of those who donated a handwritten thank you note. Towards the beginning of the pandemic, we supported many of our regular volunteers decisions to stay home. But because we cannot run our Food Bank without our volunteers, we had to reach out through other channels and thanks to @unitedwaykc, we were connected with some amazing volunteers, including Becca! Becca has been consistent and reliable. She always has a positive attitude. She has been an incredible addition to our amazing group of Food Bank volunteers, but unfortunately, yesterday was her last day with us. Green Turtle Cay is in desperate need of relief supplies. I was able to secure a drop directly to the island and worked with Florida Freedivers to bring 46 boxes of supplies, 9 gallon jugs of drinking water, 12 cases bottled water and 4 boxes of protein shakes. The boxes include hygiene, first aid, FOOD, bedding, baby items, cleaning supplies, TARPS, tools, lanterns and shoes. All these things were donated at Florida Freedivers by caring individuals. The 8th annual Reel Thanksgiving Challenge presented by the BC Film and Television Industry kicks off this Monday!  @vanfoodbank has been experiencing exceptional demands due to the COVID-19 pandemic. In March, 80% of new clients mentioned COVID-19 as the reason for visiting the food bank. They had 629 new registrants in April, 679 new clients in May, and in July, Clients and Community Agency Partners accessed 42% more food than the same month last year.  100% of proceeds from this fundraiser go directly to the Greater Vancouver Food Bank.  So how can you help?  The Reel Thanksgiving Challenge is a two-week fundraising event where different film and television productions around British Columbia compete to see who can raise the most money. Pick your team and back them with a financial donation starting at 9:00 am on Monday, September 28, 2020. The team to raise the most funds between 9-5, Monday-Friday during the competition will have the chance to win a financial contribution from one or more of our sponsors. Last week @saddlebackchurch, in partnership with our Westminster Family Resource Center, provided free food to those in need at a community drive-thru grocery distribution at Westminster Mall. @westminsterpdca officers also stopped by to assist with the distribution.
