The mothers who are receiving the benefits of the Wordens green thumbs expressed their gratitude for the bounty. We all appreciate it more than words can describe. Times are very rough right now, and the boxes make a huge difference for our families, said one mother from the Kids Thrive program. Each box contains an assortment of organic vegetables, some of which are new to these families. One mother shared that she brought home vegetables that she had never even heard of before, but said, I cannot wait to learn how to make/prepare some of the stuff, and a peer echoed this, stating, It will be fun finding new things to cook. By getting good food into the hands of our most vulnerable we are providing that support they need to sustain their families through this crisis. #LESSONSINGASLIGHTING . I was reminded of this Daily Mail hit piece today in a post I shared on Facebook. . I had written an advice column responding to a mother concerned that her daughter’s grandfather was openly bribing her to get hugs (“I’ll blow some more bubbles with you if you give me a hug.”) . I reinforced the mother’s right to feel dismayed by this, and suggested to her that this is where women’s hesitation to speak up about predatory behaviour comes from - the lessons we are taught as children (particularly girls) to accept men’s attention and bribery for affection, even when it makes us feel weird. . So of course the conservative press trashed me as an hysterical man-hater trying to demonise “loving grandfathers” as rapists and child abusers. (Guess what?! Some of them are!) . Following on from my earlier post about disingenuous right wing tactics to pretend some allegiance to “sisterhood” when it suits them, this is another thing the right does well: it pretends to care about notions like “respect” and “kindness” and even “protection”, but these are just pretty sounding weapons used in the fight to maintain the status quo. . In reality, the same people who love to invoke the rights of children when it means shielding them from learning about progressive social justice have no problem abandoning them when it comes to preserving male entitlement and patriarchy. . It’s really vital that we become trained in seeing these tactics for what they are - deliberate attempts to misdirect and undermine movements trying to bring change to the world. It’s so easy to discredit consent training (and maintain men’s rights to women’s bodies) when you can paint the people advocating for it as hysterical wowsers. It’s gaslighting and it’s effective, so we have to refuse to be distracted by it. . I am so grateful to both of these women for their time, energy, and passion to shine a spotlight on these businesses. Its been especially cool to see all the ways that the diversity of cultures in Vancouver collide and are celebrated right now, as I hope they will continue to be, permanently. I had the privilege of participating in the @bipocfoodcouver pop-up last week, and the response was wonderfully uplifting. It can be such a struggle to find a foothold in food, to make it profitable, and to feel like youll find your way. The most beautiful thing about working in a commissary kitchen like @cohocommissary is the community and collaboration that arises. One of my favourite sayings is, a rising tide floats all ships. Zoe Welham developed an interest in bowel cancer while she was working on a complex scientific research project in graduate school. As the inaugural PhD recipient of The Penn Foundation Scholarship, Zoe’s research will provide valuable new knowledge regarding the biological rules that govern bowel polyp growth – something which is still not fully understood. Comparing the microbiomes of polyps at different risk levels for developing bowel cancer, Zoe’s research aims to better understand how the gut microbiome influences the growth of bowel polyps. Whew! Last round of mountain goat relocation DONE! And Id say it was a great success. Our crew really had our shit down this year, making the process as fast, safe and as comfortable for the goats as possible. We were able to capture ~half the olympic mnt goat population and released them in the north cascades. Wishing them all the best in their new home 👋🏻 Like I said the last two years...
