As part of #HungerActionMonth, the Bloustein School’s Graduate Society of Healthcare Leaders put their efforts toward raising donations for @ElijahsPromise Community Kitchen. They gathered food supplies, hygiene products, and clothing items. This past weekend the students met at a local park, donned masks and gloves, and packed more than 100 snack and hygiene bags, as well as bulk items and donations such as rice, pasta, oil, and clothing. They packed three cars full of donations to make the trip over and deliver the items to Chef Curtis and his team at EP. GSHL was also able to make a monetary contribution because of the amazing amount of donations they were able to raise for the #Give5forEP campaign. Each person that donated $5 asked five friends to do the same, and asked those five friends to pass it along to another five people. - @blousteinschool on Instagram

Thank you everyone so much, from the bottom of my heart, for being the most amazing clinical group Ive ever had! This clinical rotation was so stressful, difficult, and mentally/emotionally taxing. We were placed on one of the busiest surgical units in RAH, had a Miranda Bailey minus the fun parts instructor, and were drowning from all the extra work given even after our shifts for the weekends. But through all our hardships, I felt like we came together more so than just colleagues, but as close friends who were all experiencing this hell together. With the amazing unit culture and nurses, and our friendship and support for each other, I can at least confidently say that the experience was all worth it because of you guys. She was admitted to a hospital in Delhi and her condition was critical. Unfortunately, she lost this war between life and death. The incident is from Hathras, UP. Victims family alleges that police didnt help initially and only helped after the outrage. The incident happened on 14th September. As per a report on DNA (27th September), all four named accused in the case have been arrested. On social media, not many people are talking about this case, no prominent calls for justice were made. No prominent calls for the arrest of these criminals were heard. Sometimes I wonder, why this kind of selective approach is taken on social media where people speak about any injustice only when it suits their political narrative. #whypediatrics 🌟🌟Tell me what breaks your heart: I will tell you your purpose.🌟🌟 💥This frase was so true for me when I realized that I wanted to be a pediatrician💥 . I always said I liked kids and I was leaning towards being a teacher or a child psychologist until I started as a volunteer in a children’s hospital. 💌Working there, amongst all the suffering, I felt something inside of me , so strong, that I could not look away. It was 💔heart break. It was wanting to help, it was wanting to DO something. I thought I’dcontinue on with my college plans and went off.. but I continued to volunteer in childrens hospitals because it felt good. I felt like I belonged in that space giving comfort to children even if I “wasnt doing much” This led me to go into medicine.. hardest decision ever because I had to make this decision on my own. I felt my heart on fire and my purpose became clear... . Through the 8 year journey that was medical school I changed my mind several times about pediatrics.. Why? Because its caused me extreme pain to see children suffering.. even though I was helping them I felt pain in my heart every time I encountered it. I felt confused for a while.. if it causes me so much pain.. maybe I cant do it.. maybe pediatrics is not for me.. It took me a lot of meditating, instrospection and Feeling To find out that I was shying away from pediatrics because of FEAR.. fear of that pain. But you know what I discovered? When you feel that pain.. that is the calling of Your purpose. That is the calling of what you are meant to be doing in this world. That pain will lead you into the purpose of your existence. You just need to find the strength to do the healing you are being called for. I found the strength in the eyes of my strong patients, patients going through the toughest of diseases and the toughest of trials and even facing death.. and their souls still shines and they show you the way. ✨✨If I am strong enough to face this incredible adversity.. you are strong enough to be a pediatrician and dedicate your life to help in healing that pain and guiding them to health or wellness in different ways. Another TQ save. This case was sent to us from a colleague @stryker2020p . The patient punched a glass window and sustained a large laceration. Initially he presented to the ER and the physician tried to control bleeding with hemostats. This proved in effective. But luckily our colleague was present to quickly apply a tourniquet and then transport/transfer him to a local trauma center for surgical intervention. Tips: Hemostats work well for clamping vessels but it can be extremely difficult or impossible if you cannot adequately visualize the vessel. This requires you to have PROXIMAL control for arterial hemorrhage. You can have a tourniquet to control the hemorrhage or you can surgically expose the vessel more Proximal away from the area of trauma to have a clean field to work. ‘That nearly one million women across the UK were caught up in the backlog waiting for breast screening is cause for grave concern as we know that around 8,600 of these women could have been living with undetected breast cancer. Mammograms are a key tool in the early detection of breast cancer, which is critical to stopping women dying from the disease. We understand that the breast screening programme was paused out of necessity due to the global COVID-19 pandemic, but we must now press play to ensure that all women can access breast screening, and we cannot afford for the programme to be paused again. COVID19 is deadly. So were viruses that killed Indigenous children in residential schools. Today is #OrangeShirtDay, an opportunity for us to reflect on Indigenous peoples experiences, forced, year after year, generation after generation, to surrender their children to Canadas Indian Residential School System (IRRS). In this system, school graveyards were as common as school playgrounds, with 24 to 69 percent of children dead. Our Canadian healthcare system, often revered for its universality and accessibility, played a sinister and prominent role in this genocide. We better understand today that the historical relationship between Canadian healthcare systems and Indigenous peoples has been one of colonial violence, otherwise known as medical colonialism. This is why Dr. Samir Shaheen-Hussain, Dr. Suzanne Shoush, @SemirBulle & I teamed up to share our thoughts in a new opinion piece published today in @TheTorontoStar. It outlines why Orange Shirt Day is an important national day to honour the resilience, strength, dignity, and perseverance of Indigenous Peoples in Canada despite the genocide of the IRSS. Only about 16% of Americans know their sickle cell trait (SCT) status – this number can be even higher in low resourced countries. ⁠⠀ ⁠⠀ [Sickle Cell 102]: For the sickle cell nerds...⁠⠀ ⁠⠀ In most high resource countries, every individual undergoes a blood test within the first 24 hours of life that can diagnose a myriad of conditions including sickle cell disease and #sicklecell trait. Interestingly, this practice only started in the U.S. in every state in the year 2000.⁠⠀ ⁠⠀ According to the CDC, most people with SCT do not have any symptoms of SCD although in extreme conditions like dehydration, high altitudes and low oxygen levels in the atmosphere, SCT carriers might experience complications. Some of these complications include exercise-induced rhabdomyolysis (muscle breakdown), renal medullary carcinoma (a type of kidney cancer), proteinuria (blood in the urine) among many others. ⁠⠀ ⁠⠀ Although the sickle cell mutation is thought to have originated from the equatorial parts of the world and served as a protective factor against malaria, every individual irrespective of race, ethnicity, or ancestry can be a sickle cell trait carrier. Our new Pandemic Emergency Response Unit! Unusual times require creative and unique solutions. Yesterday, we moved Rescue 77 to Station 6 and dedicated it solely to Pandemic priority medical response. We are hoping to limit exposure to our other response units while adding and upgrading the level of personal protection equipment for these two first responders while limiting EMS equipment that could get contaminated am adding more decontamination options and procedures. Amazingly, we have fire personnel volunteering to staff this new unit. My thanks to Captain Martin and Firefighter Carpenter who first staffed Rescue 6 yesterday. They already have started to make changes and improvements to configuration, equipment, process.and procedure. Zoe Welham developed an interest in bowel cancer while she was working on a complex scientific research project in graduate school.⁠ ⁠ As the inaugural PhD recipient of The Penn Foundation Scholarship, Zoe’s research will provide valuable new knowledge regarding the biological rules that govern bowel polyp growth – something which is still not fully understood.⁠ ⁠ Comparing the microbiomes of polyps at different risk levels for developing bowel cancer, Zoe’s research aims to better understand how the gut microbiome influences the growth of bowel polyps.
