“How to CRUSH your Med School Interview: . . . 1.It is always important to be yourself, but with that said, it is as equally important to be professional. Honesty about your accomplishments as well as your failures is extremely important both in your application and during your interview. . 2.During your interview day, you will most likely meet with both faculty and students. Make sure that you are still professional with students because their opinion of you is important to the admissions committee. . 3.Being well groomed is important and may seem obvious to some of you, but you would be surprised by the say some people show up to medical school interviews. . 4.Preparedness is also key to success. This means that you should prepare both for the questions you will be asked by your interviewer as well as prepare questions you will ask them about the school/program. . 5.I would recommend searching online forums or asking current students that you may know for insight into questions that the specific school you’re interviewing at may ask. . 6.Definitely be prepared to discuss all of the extracurriculars you included on your application as well as specific grades you may have received. . 7.Review commonly asked questions and prepare a script or key points for these questions. This preparation will help provide some stress relief during your interview day. . 8.Practice Practice Practice! Whether its just out loud with yourself, with your roommate, with your parents, or with an advisor. You want to be prepared and have an idea of how you will be answering these questions. Researchers from the Wellcome Sanger Institute and @UCSanDiego collaborated with us to accelerate the analysis of molecular signatures of somatic mutations by 30x on NVIDIA DGX systems. Gene changes that occur in human cells over a person’s lifetime, known as somatic mutations, cause the vast majority of cancers. They can be triggered by environmental or behavioral factors such as exposure to ultraviolet light or radiation, drinking or smoking. Her son was a doctor. She was trying to sell me a dream. “Doctors wife” was the title she wanted me to have. There is nothing wrong with that, by the way. The wrong in the statement was a woman being told her worth because of her looks. That because I was pretty (to her), that I could stop there. I didnt need to be smart, or accomplished. A man would pick me because of how I looked. The wrong in the statement was that society amounts a womans success by who she marries. Still. The wrong in that statement was that she told me that I would become too bold, and too much for men if I became the physician. The wrong is that.. women are sold dreams of success based on who they marry. The idea that you chose the hard route by becoming the doctor instead of marrying one. She was right. I didnt need to become a doctor. I wanted to. I wanted to help people. I didnt see myself as better than anyone because of how I looked. To be honest, looks are the last thing that I use to judge someone. Intelligent. Ambitious. Dedicated. Resilient. These are the adjectives I hope people use to describe me. And these are the adjectives that mean the most. Nobody should be shocked that physicians are attractive women. Beautiful women. Women who dress how they want. Women who are mothers, wives, homemakers and physicians outside the home. Intelligent. Ambitious. Dedicated. Resilient. That is how I hope shed describe me if she met me again. Ladies, please take this one advice: dont let anybody tell you your worth, future, or what you should be doing. You can do it all. Tag someone who needs to read this. 👩🏻⚕️ P.S. Final Exams Fast Approaching! Just mapped out my Final Written Exam/ Performance Exam STUDY schedules! And it is a DOOZY! This is the final step before the DMDAS Class of 22’ Heads into the clinic to serve the great patients of the University of Illinois! During this time, the anxiety and pressure start to creep it’s way in, you begin to question yourself,”did I study enough? Did i practice enough? Or even am I enough?” At the same time I feel guilty not being able to spend time with my wife and kids, I like to remember what a mentor told me once: You Didn’t Get this Far, JUST to get THIS FAR! Has anyone tried the intermittent fast? What’s your experience? I started doing it a few months ago and worked my way up to fasting 16 hours per day. I now eat between noon and 8 pm. tbh, I decided to try it because I’d read the litany of seemingly endless benefits: reduced risk of diabetes and heart problems, better brain health etc Who doesn’t want this stuff? Ok, so no bloodwork yet, and I have no idea how to figure out if I have a better brain. 😂 But, Ive noticed a few unexpected benefits. For example: Im more present with food. Each day, when I take my first bite around noon, I savor it. Yesterday, I broke my fast with a strawberry. And let me tell you: I’ve never tasted a sweeter strawberry. 🍓 I’ve learned there’s nothing wrong with being hungry sometimes. So what? This has been liberating. I’m more clear headed. (Placebo? This is possible) It reduces my cognitive load in the mornings. I used to rummage through my fridge, freeze with indecision, whip up some scrambled eggs, mixed veggies, a smoothie, or whatever I finally landed on, and then clean up afterwards In my case, having the same breakfast every day — nothing — is one less choice. omg, for me, this keeps my life lighter and simpler. 👯♀️ - @jalehbisharat on Instagram

Antimicrobial resistance is the greatest modern public health threat with over 1 million annual deaths, impacting marginalized communities the most, and is set to become the #1 global cause of death by 2050 (CDC, WHO). As a clinical microbiologist, she specializes in the diagnosis of infectious diseases. Ayesha develops accurate and rapid diagnostics that detect emerging pathogens and antibiotic resistant superbugs and find innovative therapies against superbugs in infected patients.⠀ ⠀ This is not only critical in outbreaks, but early detection of superbugs ensures patients receive the right therapy, and aids in curbing global spread. Anche io, come tutti i colleghi, ho paura di andare a lavoro e di non trovare abbastanza mascherine o camici a sufficienza per tutti noi. Iniziano a scarseggiare.. Ho paura che, durante qualche movimento, la maschera possa non aderire più bene al viso, lasciandoti esposto al virus. Ho paura che qualche collega, stremato dalla stanchezza, mi tocchi senza essersi sfilato i guanti. Sono stanco perché il camice ti fa sudare, perché la maschera fa male al volto, perché una volta messa non puoi più bere o mangiare per 6/8 ore. Hey incoming FY1s, I know a lot of you sacrificed the end of med school and graduated early to become interim foundation doctors but tomorrow is your official start day as the doctor you have hoped to be for many yrs. It’s 𝘺𝘰𝘶𝘳 day guys! How can we not celebrate that? 🎉 You made it here 💪🏽 Welcome to the team 💙 Every 1st Wed of Aug, thousands of newly qualified doctors before you have entered the wards and depts bringing fresh energy but feeling daunted. I did too and so will so many of you, especially during these pandemic times. Let’s not underestimate that. Here’s the advice I wish I had: 🩺 You are smart, brilliant, have given up years, countless events and know more than you think you do today. Experience comes with time but that doesn’t make you a less important member of the team 🩺 No question is too silly, you are a lifelong learner just like I still am years later. Seek out seniors who are keen to teach and once you find us, 𝘥𝘰𝘶𝘣𝘭𝘦-𝘥𝘰𝘸𝘯 and absorb. Find a mentor, aside from your educational supervisor 🩺 You won’t please everyone and you don’t need to. There will always be some bad apple who will tear you down on a ward round or clinic. It’s not 𝘺𝘰𝘶, it’s 𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘮. Speak up to those of us advocating for change against this in training, this culture needs to go. The only environment you should be in is where your learning & development is nurtured 🩺 Work together to take your breaks. Don’t martyr by yourself, your life and health is worth more than any recognition you will ever get for this. If you’re not getting breaks on time, flag this up early. 💙 You have absolutely got this 💪🏽 And have fun! Play just as hard! We are six months into the new abnormal. Everything has changed. Everyone has concerns. We are all stressed out, confused. No one seems to be happy. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ This whole thing? Its just exhausting. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Ive been immensely fortunate to be in an office that has remained open, continuing to see kids throughout the months of turmoil. As the proverbial dust has settled, however, the reality of our new situation is taking its hold. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ I am really starting to miss seeing my patients’ faces. I miss seeing their parents faces. I miss them seeing mine. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ I understand and value the importance of masking up for our communities. Within the medical community, however, I see mask-wearing as a normal part of our wardrobe for a long, long time. I’m just feeling bummed out. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Yes, I want a successful and safe vaccine. ❤️WHY CARDIOLOGY? Thanks @yourheartdoc for tagging me to provide my top 5 reasons for students and doctors in training to become a Cardiologist! Hard to summarize, but.. here they are (I am obviously very biased 😊): 1. ✅So many ways to ACTUALLY IMPACT patient outcomes - from pPCIs in a STEMI setting to primary prevention, you get to truly SAVE LIVES (I will never forget managing my very first cardiac arrest, the thrill of performing CPR, shocking the patient, and bringing her back with us...) 2. ✅Research. I think it’s part of our duty to bring a little contribution to knowledge in our field. I love research and Cardiology is one the most productive areas of medicine if you are interested in “winning the publication game”. 3. ✅A wide range of possibilities. My main focus is advanced echo imaging; however, as a cardiologist you get to choose from mainly clinical duties to “plumbing” (cath lab 😜), being an “electrician” (EP lab 😜), a “photographer” (cardiac imaging 😜) and many other subspecialties - never get bored! 4. ✅Interaction with colleagues. You do need to build a solid network in order to provide your patients with the best opportunities. 5. ✅Interaction with your patients. Yesterday was my first day as a home heath and hospice nurse and I truly think I’m going to love it! My schedule is 9-5:30 M-F with on-call hours if my patients aren’t doing well or pass away. I’ll be acting as an RN and a case manager and coordinating care, meds, DME, and other medical supply delivery with MDs, NPs, RNs, HAs, LVNs, chaplains, social workers and more! I’ll also be spending time getting to know my patients and their families while doing my assessments and making sure they have everything they need and all of their questions are answered. I feel so blessed to be able to work with patients and their families during difficult times and to support them through the grieving process. Being a patient advocate has always been a passion of mine and I love that it will be a large part of this job! As a result, my relationships and health suffered. However, guess what? 𝙄𝙩 𝙬𝙖𝙨 𝙬𝙤𝙧𝙩𝙝 𝙞𝙩, I matched into residency and now have the chance to pursue my dream career But life is more than just survival mode, my goal now is balance. ❤️ To be honest, I felt a little silly doing this pose. Seems people like to hold things out in front of them on instagram like...here is a stethoscope! 😆 . But, on a more serious note, let’s talk about matters of the heart. . 💔 Heart disease is the leading cause of death in the United States. It is the number one killer in females as well, which is often overlooked. Men present with the more classic, grip-your-chest type of symptoms. Females notoriously present with more subtle symptoms, which may even feel like indigestion. This is not meant to scare you, just to keep you aware. . 😯 I had an unusual symptom when I started running again after having my daughter. I went and got checked out, and turns out I was having benign symptomatic PVC’s (extra heart beats) but it was so reassuring to know that all was well. It was an expensive work-up to figure out that I was just out of shape! But, I am so glad I did it. . ✨ A few of my favorite heart health recommendations: . ❤️ Take CoQ10 100 mg twice per day. This is great for the heart. If you happen to be on a statin, you MUST be taking CoQ10 with it. (As a side note, this supplement is also great for fertility as well. Improves egg quality.) . 🥗 Aim for 7-9 servings of fruits and vegetables daily. More veggies than fruits. A serving size is a medium size piece of fruit, 1/2 cup cooked veggies or 1 cup raw veggies. . 🍎 Get at least 25 grams of fiber per day. With a mix of soluble and insoluble fiber. Fruits, veggies, beans/lentils, nuts, gluten-free grains. . 🥘 If you consume animal protein, try to think of it as a side, and not the main part of the meal. Your plate should be loaded with produce and healthy fats, and the meat as the “side.” . 🏃🏻♀️Walking just 30 minutes 5 days per week can lower your risk. . 🍫 Dark chocolate has heart healthy flavanols, that can improve blood flow, reduce blood pressure, and can boost mood. The Cleveland Clinic says 1 ounce a few times per week for heart health. Yes please! . 🧘🏻♀️ Manage stress! Ordinary glass panels can act as solar panels when a layer of nanoparticles is sandwiched between two panes. This could help us take advantage of solar energy in cities where space for solar panels may be limited. . “If we’ve done our job, no one will even know that they’re there,” says Hunter McDaniel at UbiQD, a materials manufacturing firm in the US. He and his colleagues have developed transparent solar panels that are indistinguishable from regular glass. . Test installations, involving panels that are 1 square metre in size, are under way in buildings in the US and the Netherlands. The panels have a power conversion efficiency of 3.6 per cent, a measure of how much sunlight is converted into electricity. Opaque solar panels, in comparison, have efficiencies between 15 and 20 per cent. . These transparent panels are made from two layers of glass glued together with a polymer that contains nanoparticles known as quantum dots. With a core of copper indium sulphide and a shell of zinc sulphide, these quantum dots are tiny semiconductors that can manipulate light. . When the nanoparticles are excited by exposure to UV light, they release photons that travel along the transparent panel towards its edge. The perimeter is fitted with solar cells, which convert the photons into electrical current. Here we go...I’ve kept this a secret for a really long time..but I wrote a book! And it’s now available in its virtual version! Phew. That was tough for me to get out. I grew up in a family where we never really discussed our accomplishments so it often feels unnatural. BUT..I’ve always felt like my career wouldn’t be complete without the ability to share this knowledge with those who needed it most. I’ve been putting together this book for the last year, but instead of discussing it publicly, I’ve poured my heart and soul into ensuring that it would be a resource. Understanding the nuances of treating pelvic pain is not something that’s taught in any training programs, and while my path in gyn and urology may be an unconventional one, I think it’s important in approaching the causes of pelvic pain with a full armamentarium. I always tell my patients, “it’s my job to give you the tools to help you treat yourself.” And this book is just that. Let’s talk about vaginismus! I’ve gotten so many messages recently on this. Unfortunately I cannot give advice on social media. However I would like to share some education! What is primary vaginismus? Primary vaginismus is when vaginal penetration has never been achieved ever. So this means you have never been able to put in a tampon, have penetrative intercourse or digital penetration. What is secondary vaginismus? Secondary vaginismus is when vaginal penetration has happened before, but is no longer possible, potentially due to factors such as gynecologic surgery, abuse, trauma, menopause or radiation. When people have pain with intercourse this is called Dyspareunia- just the medical term for it. It is often confused with vaginismus. People can have painful intercourse for many reasons that are not vaginismus (like endometriosis). Vaginismus is an involuntary tightening of the vaginal muscles which makes penetration difficult or impossible. Many people who have vaginismus often have a fear of vaginal penetration and decreased sexual desire related to penetration. Which is not surprising! My vaginismus patients are a motivated bunch seeking help! I am incredibly proud of my patients when they make progress with their treatment! Its daunting to work with a therapist, use dilators and suppositories and have injections to an area that is sensitive. To all the women struggling with vaginismus do not give up!! I see so much success so often! It’s truly amazing to see when women are able to have a sexually satisfying experience with or without penetration! (Which is key to remember that penetrative intercourse is not the only way to have sex.) You are not broken!
