The first actual afro-latino valedictorian of Harvard Law School, Pedro Albizu Campos graduated in 1921. He graduated while simultaneously studying Literature, philosophy, Chemical Engineering, and Military Science. He was fluent in six modern and two classical languages: English, Spanish, French, German, Portuguese, Italian, Latin, and ancient Greek. Pedro was denied the valedictorian distinction by a professor who delayed his final grade to keep him from having the highest grade point average in the 1921 class. They wanted to avoid the embarrassment of having a black Puerto Rican be the valedictorian of one of the most prestigious law schools in the country. Pedro Albizu Campos turned down a Supreme Court clerkship, multiple prestigious firm offers, and plum government appointments to go back to Puerto Rico and practice poverty law. Instead of making himself wealthy, he worked for folks and often receive payment in the form of chickens from poor farmers. He then began to lead the nascent independence movement of Puerto Rico. For this, he was targeted by Hoovers FBI and eventually thrown in prison for leading the independence movement. At the time, it was illegal to fly the Puerto Rican flag. Pedro Albizu Campos suffered for years in prison and was subject to horrific torture and human experiments. They experimented on him using radiation. This was at a time where the U.S. military deliberately exposed Puerto Rican men to mustard gas to see how it affected them. He later suffered a stroke after a decade in prison and was pardoned and released only to die months later in 1965. This is only a very brief retelling of this story. Racism is baked into the DNA of the United States government and how its treated Puerto Rican people. Let’s talk about vaginismus! I’ve gotten so many messages recently on this. Unfortunately I cannot give advice on social media. However I would like to share some education! What is primary vaginismus? Primary vaginismus is when vaginal penetration has never been achieved ever. So this means you have never been able to put in a tampon, have penetrative intercourse or digital penetration. What is secondary vaginismus? Secondary vaginismus is when vaginal penetration has happened before, but is no longer possible, potentially due to factors such as gynecologic surgery, abuse, trauma, menopause or radiation. When people have pain with intercourse this is called Dyspareunia- just the medical term for it. It is often confused with vaginismus. People can have painful intercourse for many reasons that are not vaginismus (like endometriosis). Vaginismus is an involuntary tightening of the vaginal muscles which makes penetration difficult or impossible. Many people who have vaginismus often have a fear of vaginal penetration and decreased sexual desire related to penetration. Which is not surprising! My vaginismus patients are a motivated bunch seeking help! I am incredibly proud of my patients when they make progress with their treatment! Its daunting to work with a therapist, use dilators and suppositories and have injections to an area that is sensitive. To all the women struggling with vaginismus do not give up!! I see so much success so often! It’s truly amazing to see when women are able to have a sexually satisfying experience with or without penetration! Ho paura che qualche collega, stremato dalla stanchezza, mi tocchi senza essersi sfilato i guanti. Sono stanco perché il camice ti fa sudare, perché la maschera fa male al volto, perché una volta messa non puoi più bere o mangiare per 6/8 ore. Sono provato da questa situazione perché i pazienti sono molti, perché sono molto gravi e perché ti senti impotente senza armi contro il virus. A fine turno, saluti tutti, ti lavi le mani più volte, togli la tua divisa da lavare, ti lavi ancora le mani e metti i tuoi vestiti. Esci. Cammini verso casa ed ogni passo è una domanda: oggi mi sono contagiato? Ho fatto tutto bene? Quando torni a casa ti butti sotto l’acqua e ti lavi dalla testa ai piedi, come per aver la sensazione di tirar via il virus. Lavi anche il tuo telefono. Sono stanco psicologicamente perché, per salvaguardare le persone che vivono con me, rimango a distanza, nessun abbraccio; pranzo o cena separatamente. Per molti di voi, sono appena passati 14 giorni da quando siete in casa: iniziate ad esser più tranquilli di non essere contagiati. Per noi, non c’è mai una scadenza. Ogni sera il countdown si azzera e ripartono i 14 giorni. Non minimizzate il problema, non vanificate i nostri sacrifici. …Ho voglia di guardare il cielo sdraiato sull’erba di una collina o sulla sabbia di una spiaggia mentre sento la brezza sulla mia pelle e tra le pause del vento chiacchierare con qualcuno per sfogarmi. Yesterday was my first day as a home heath and hospice nurse and I truly think I’m going to love it! My schedule is 9-5:30 M-F with on-call hours if my patients aren’t doing well or pass away. I’ll be acting as an RN and a case manager and coordinating care, meds, DME, and other medical supply delivery with MDs, NPs, RNs, HAs, LVNs, chaplains, social workers and more! I’ll also be spending time getting to know my patients and their families while doing my assessments and making sure they have everything they need and all of their questions are answered. I feel so blessed to be able to work with patients and their families during difficult times and to support them through the grieving process. Being a patient advocate has always been a passion of mine and I love that it will be a large part of this job! ❤️WHY CARDIOLOGY? Thanks @yourheartdoc for tagging me to provide my top 5 reasons for students and doctors in training to become a Cardiologist! Hard to summarize, but.. here they are (I am obviously very biased 😊): 1. ✅So many ways to ACTUALLY IMPACT patient outcomes - from pPCIs in a STEMI setting to primary prevention, you get to truly SAVE LIVES (I will never forget managing my very first cardiac arrest, the thrill of performing CPR, shocking the patient, and bringing her back with us...) 2. ✅Research. I think it’s part of our duty to bring a little contribution to knowledge in our field. I love research and Cardiology is one the most productive areas of medicine if you are interested in “winning the publication game”. 3. ✅A wide range of possibilities. My main focus is advanced echo imaging; however, as a cardiologist you get to choose from mainly clinical duties to “plumbing” (cath lab 😜), being an “electrician” (EP lab 😜), a “photographer” (cardiac imaging 😜) and many other subspecialties - never get bored! 4. ✅Interaction with colleagues. You do need to build a solid network in order to provide your patients with the best opportunities. 5. ✅Interaction with your patients.
