Oldest art in Britain discovered in Jersey 🇯🇪 Archaeologists have confirmed that artistic designs found on stone plaquettes in St. Saviour are older than cave art, making them the earliest example of art in the British Isles. The stones were found at Les Varines between 2014 and 2018 and are believed to be over 15,000 years old. 𝗙𝗼𝗰𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗖𝗹𝗼𝘁𝗵 - It humors me when I do array shoots the somewhat odd similarities and tangents there are when working with, setting up, and shooting with large format view cameras. If youve photographed with a 4x5, 8x10, anything in between, or an even larger formats a good focusing cloth helps block out the light and peripherial world so you can focus on the image you intend to capture and create through the glass. My old Superman Returns crew jacket has been with me for a while now and is my personal goto when dealing with extreme brightness in challenging light when looking at a single lcd, multiple lcds, or an external monitor if I dont setup a shade, or in this case dont want to hike with one. Oddly it feels somewhat similar to my Panavision camera cover in terms of durability and its lasted well over a decade now, plus I can wear it in and stay warm when wrapping after the sun has set. Wrapping btw in very remote locations at dark is always an adventure, but ill save that for another post. The strange one here is Superman Returns projects codename was Redsun while filming and with the fires and smoke I have certainly used this jacket to block the light of a red sun a few times. #R3D - @philhollandphfx on Instagram

Today I put out a video that documents a very long journey. One I didn’t expect to be so complicated. Earlier this year I asked myself a question: “is it possible to take a picture of another galaxy?” The answer to that question ended being four months of mind numbing intense work that eventually led me to fulfilling the goal. I was lucky that right as I was about to give up, I got reached out to by @NVIDIAcreators who sent me an HP Envy 15 #RTXStudio laptop with a beefy graphics card that allowed me to process my images a lot faster. I didn’t plan this ad as part of the video. It was just a very lucky serendipity that ended up being key for completing my goal. This months astrophoto feature is of The Occultation of Mars by our Moon and was taken by James Mack. James writes, On Tuesday, February 18, 2020, at 7:09:07 am the Red Planet Mars was occulted by our moon. A relatively rare event even though there are five occultations in 2020 that involve Mars, with this the only one visible in the U.S. and Central America. The others take place in March, August, September, and October, and are all mostly visible in the Southern Hemisphere. Occultations are very interesting not only intrinsically but scientifically. At the time of this event ... The Moon was a 24.8-day old waning crescent. With a Visual Magnitude of -7.9 and Apparent Size of 31.1 arc min and was 23.7% illuminated. Its Distance from Earth was 238,641 miles and its Diameter is 2,159 mi. Mars on the other hand with its Visual Magnitude of +1.2 and Apparent Size of 5.2 arc sec was 91.9% illuminated. The Reappearance of Mars Image Credit & Copyright: David Duarte and Romualdo Caldas Explanation: Mars reappears just beyond the Moons dark limb in this stack of sharp video frames captured on September 6. Of course to reappear it had to disappear in the first place. It did that over an hour earlier when the sunlit southern edge of the waning gibbous Moon passed in front of the Red Planet as seen from Maceio, Brazil. The lunar occultation came as the Moon was near apogee, about 400,000 kilometers away. Mars was almost 180 times more distant. It was the fourth lunar occultation of Mars visible from planet Earth in 2020. Visible from some southern latitudes, the fifth lunar occultation of Mars in 2020 will take place on October 3 when the Moon and Mars are both nearly opposite the Sun in planet Earths sky. - @astro_photography_ on Instagram

Many of you know I’ve been working on this project to document to Arctic Refuge with the Campion Foundation for the last five years. This winter we partnered with Terra Mater to bring out a wonderful film on the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, a place that has been fought over for the last many decades. When doing the film work to document the refuge it was important to me to convey a sense of place of this incredible land and to show the animals as part of the environment. The Terra Mater team has done a wonderful job to build the sequences and give the images the space they need. It brings the Arctic Refuge to life. We are currently working with Terra Mater on the IMAX and Giant Screen Film. There will soon be a release across the US for the television and film as well and I will announce it here. En esta ocasión, con fotografías de la localidad de #Andacollo, en donde se reportó en el año 1984 la presencia de terrazas en las faldas de cerros, específicamente, en los sectores de Quebradas Arenillas y Agua de La Zorra. Lo interesante de este reporte, al cual el Museo acudió a realizar investigaciones en 1985, fue que a pesar de haber sido construidas por un obrero llamado Féliz Ramirez en 1935, reflejaban una metodología de construcción y técnicas provenientes de conocimientos ancestrales, que probablemente fueron transmitidas generacionalmente hasta épocas actuales. #MASCOT a été libéré du navire-mère #Hayabusa2 le 3 octobre 2018, à une altitude de 41 m au-dessus de la surface de #Ryugu. Lors de son premier contact avec la surface MASCOT a ensuite rebondi en arrière et a parcouru 17m supplémentaires pour atteindre son premier point de repos dans une dépression locale. Au cours de la descente de 6 minutes vers la surface et de la phase de rebond, linstrument MASCam a pris 20 images. Ces images permettent danalyser la surface de lastéroïde et démontrent que les inclusions semblent similaires à celles des météorites à chondrite carbonée. Jupiter. This magnificent gas giant is one of the most spectacular planets in our solar system. Covered in constantly changing swirls and stripes, Jupiter changes from hour to hour. On the bottom right is the iconic Great Red Spot. This fierce storm has raged for centuries, and is actually three times larger than the diameter of Earth! My lockdown obsession has been learning how to photograph the planets. Creating an image like this required combining almost 80,000 images shot over a 15 minute period, with nearly 100GB of data! Ive been volunteering for the @unimelb @telescopesinschools program, with @redlippedastro and have been having an amazing time playing with one of their telescopes. Earthrise | William Anders, 1968 The photograph that changed the world. I first saw this photograph in 1999, minutes before we hit the year 2000, on a TV program that was probably showing the greatest pictures of the last millennia. It was shot on the Apollo 8 mission, and was the first time humanity saw their place in the Universe, through a high quality color image. It sparked a global movement, and brought the world together in watchfulness and care for our fragile galactic spaceship. Environmental awareness was never the same again. We had finally seen our home. This Earth Day, I want to share this iconic image, along with a few that I have shot, in the brief parts of the Earth that Ive been lucky to see, to remind us again of the beauty of our world. The Covid-19 pandemic has made all of us much more cognizant of the liberties we enjoyed and abused, without regards to consequences. Today, in this unprecedented crisis, while we sit at home as a global family, and wonder and reflect, the tiny vulnerable blue ball we call home recovers from the damage we inflicted on it. Photos of Director of Photography John Seale #johnseale on location for Mad Max: Fury Road. John came out of retirement after 15 years to collaborate once again with George Miller #georgemiller on Fury Road. Miller had Seale use a center frame method throughout the film as a stylistic aesthetic so the audience never questioned the point of interest which allowed for quick edits. The shoot lasted 138 days while shooting Seale turned 70 years old. Congratulations to John Seale for an outstanding cinematic achievement with Mad Max: Fury Road.
