It’s August 1st, rent is due, it‘s hot as hell, and many people are in danger of losing their housing. The housing crisis and the struggle for racial justice are connected, and we need to remember this if we’re committed to the fight. Listen, I’m happy that some of y’all can buy a house, and, one day, maybe I can do that too. But we shouldn’t forget what a huge privilege that is in this shitty capitalist society we’re in. The idea that we have to give up so much of our income for a basic human right is something we should all be angry about. And can we please stop glorifying the idea that buying multiple properties, especially in gentrified areas, is some kind of path to living our best lives? You’re not self-sufficient. i allow myself to make mistakes, and i forgive myself often. This is how i learn and play and take myself lightly as i grow. Perfectionism and self-criticism are strategies we may have learned to meet deeper and underlying needs. Sometimes, the strategy of perfectionism or self-criticism is a conditioned response to a need to be acceptable and accepted, to belong, to be seen or heard, to be loved and respected. These are basic and valid human needs, who doesnt need and want to belong or be loved?! We have different strategies to meet those human needs though- and often, those strategies like perfectionism and inner criticism hurt like hell or hold us back. Questions for pondering... What would it be like to notice what our needs are beneath these unserving strategies, and to learn to care for those needs directly and lovingly vs. habitually and painfully? What would it be like to recognize that, oh, this craving to be perfect came from learning early on that i needed to be a good girl to get mamas hugs and smile...and i still want that now, i want someone to smile at me adoringly and i want to feel loved... And what would it be like to then give that to ourselves first? To look at ourselves adoringly in the mirror- when weve made a mistake or not- and let ourselves know through loving eyes, hey bb, youre allowed to make mistakes and youre still worthy, interesting and dope as fuck. i love you. It’s the end of September which for me means it’s been 1 year since I told my abuser to get lost and to never speak to me again. I drew this in my private journal during the height of his abuse. It was not meant to be shared but with September also being about suicide prevention I hope that my honesty in this illustration can help others feel less alone. For a while there I didn’t think I’d make it to a year. I thought terminating our relationship would instantly make me happy but instead it only revealed how many toxic relationships I have endured through so much of my life that I always thought was “normal” For an entire year I’ve been unlearning unhealthy patterns and building myself up. It’s been a lonely road—I’ll be honest. I expected more support in this journey but the road to healing only has a seat for one. So this is me patting myself on the back. Earlier this month I had in opportunity to reopen this Pandora’s box and I choose not to which was a huge win for me. I don’t need closure from him or need to know what he’s up to or who he’s manipulating now. I don’t need anything from him because instead of pain when I think of him now I feel...nothing. And that’s the greatest feeling of all. I wish I could go back in time to those weeks—months I could barely get out of bed and tell her she’s gonna make it. So instead if you are reading this now in the depths of your depression for thinking you’re not going to make it...you will. Its fun to look back and think about where I was at age thirteen. Some memories are only slightly embarrassing, like buying my first Sex Pistols tape and being afraid of the “I am an anti-christ” lyric. “What if I go to hell for listening to this music?” I asked myself as I slid the cassette back into its case. That kind of fear and indoctrination takes some effort to undo. A couple years later, I would be listening to bands like Born Against and Struggle and my fear of hell would be replaced by a re-education, one where, among other things, I learned hell isn’t even biblical. As I grew older, I continued to find out that things I took as fact were not factual. Shaving does not make hair grow back thicker, gum does not take seven years to digest, masturbation won’t make you blind, and straight white men are not better than everyone else --even the really cool looking scene kids! Once I started with questioning, I started to question everything. I still do, but I’m willing to be wrong and adjust my thinking. It’s not always easy; my ego doesn’t always like it, but I know I am better for it. INTERSECTIONALITY was introduced to me by punk rock, with Gilman Street and ABC No Rio’s “NO sexist, NO racist, NO homophobic” booking policies. Bands from Team Dresch to Crudos were literally screaming intersectional politics in my face. I was furiously taking notes! In the late 80s, I remember not flinching when a kid would call another kid a “fag” or “retarded”. That is embarrassing, but it was only a couple years later, I would be writing articles in my zine condemning those attitudes and behaviour. None of us are beyond change. It takes a radical culture in the underground to guide the mainstream. Whether they know it or not, they have always looked to us for guidance. Keep pushing kids, we got this! Ps. Cartoonmuseum Basel presents a selection from its extensive collection: Today with Joe Sacco! The collection of the Cartoonmuseum contains drawings with or without words on social and political issues, cultural events and everyday life. These drawings were shown in the retrospective titled Joe Sacco. Comics Journalist in the year 2015 and are now part of the museums collection. Joe Sacco (born 1960) is a Maltese journalist and cartoonist living in the USA. He has revived comics journalism and developed it to perfection. Today, he is considered the most important representative of the genre. His reports from conflict zones offer deep insight into areas of the world where discrimination, persecution, and war are ever-present. They lend a voice to people suffering from violent conflicts, and thus arouse understanding and empathy with the readers. His critical and highly sophisticated reports and his absolute standard of quality have broadened the scope of comics and won them new audiences. 1990, one year after the fall of the Berlin Wall, Joe Sacco returns to Berlin for almost two years, and stays afloat as a cartoonist and poster designer for rock concerts. In this period he produces the autobiographical short stories The War Junkie, Save Us, and Palestinians and Others, which are already short documentary reports, anticipating the comprehensive comics reports. The first of these artworks we are please to share is Unify by artist @amysmithart . In her collage portrait, Smith combines her photography with layers of hand-cut stencils and pieces of protest signage to reflect on the suffrage movement and the modern woman.
