In a country like India where 10 farmers on an average are dying of suicide everyday, students are taking their lives in the wake of digital divide and institutional casteism and bringing in standardised tests like #NEET that took lives of marginalised youth; when violence against gender minorities is at record high; cry for suicide prevention without taking into account the structural issues that lay underneath is pointless. Bringing about systemic change in medical and mental health education is needed on immediate basis. We need to start teaching mental health professionals to consider the systemic challenges that must have lead a person towards suicidal ideation. Suicide prevention should look beyond crisis intervention alone. If we are talking about “holistic” approaches, that should be beyond the capitalistic ideas of well-being.
