Soviet soldiers in a trench along the front at Leningrad. September 1st, 1941. The blockade and encirclement of Leningrad was one of the longest and most horrific sieges in history, lasting 872 days between September 8th 1941 and January 27th 1944, when the weakened Axis forces were expelled by the Soviet Leningrad-Novgorod Offensive after a two week battle. More than one million Soviet civilians and soldiers have perished during the siege. - @pakdhe_stallin on Instagram

No matter who we are or where we come from, what religion or race.... we are all American 🇺🇸 We have recovered from so much, moved forward from so much. From world wars to depressions. When the chips are down, I still bet on USA in the end. America gets better when every one of us is better. We don’t simply get better by forcing our ideas on other people. Live your virtue, show your kids how to treat one another, be the example. Good change might not happen over night, but imagine if we were all 1% better every day. SFC Joseph Celestine by Susan Ellen. In 2011 The Columbus Museum contracted Savannah-based photographer Ellen Susan to take likenesses of several soldiers from nearby Fort Benning, using nineteenth-century techniques. The artist had previously created similar portraits of service members from Fort Stewart and Hunter Army Airfield in southeastern Georgia. About this haunting overarching group of images, the artist explained: I felt that the 150-year old collodion process could be a meaningful way to photograph contemporary soldiers, to provide a counterpoint to the anonymous representations of soldiers seen in newspapers and on television. The necessarily long exposures of this slow process often result in an intensity of gaze that asks the viewer to look longer, and the grainless, highly detailed surface brings out minute details of each individual. In the end, I wanted to produce physically enduring [and] emotionally arresting images of people who are being sent repeatedly into a war zone with no apparent end in sight. #MuseumColumbus #Photography #USArmy #Army #FortBenning #FtBenning #Art #History #Museum #ArtMuseum #HistoryMuseum #ColumbusGA #Georgia #Military #Soldier #Portrait - @museumcolumbus on Instagram

Waffen SS soldiers in eastern front @regiment_germania . 🇺🇸The Waffen-SS (SS Fighters) were an armed force of Nazi Germany born in March 1933 as a military arm of the SS. From the initial adoption of a rigid racial and physical selection of their members, it was spent in the last years of the Second World War to also recruit foreign volunteers of German ethnicity or however ideologically linked to National Socialism despite their origin. The Waffen-SS participated in almost all the battles of the Second World War; their soldiers gave proof of combativeness, efficiency and strong ideological motivation to the point that, on the one hand, they were guilty of brutal episodes of summary violence against civilians and prisoners of war and, on the other, often showed an excessive and reckless disdain for danger. . . . . . . #war #ww2 #ww #ss #worldwar2 #worldwarii #worldwar2german #wehrmacht #waffenss #warsaw #warm #worldwartwo #worldwar2photos #world #gun #soldier #history #ww1 #ww2history #soviet #follow #ww1 #secondworldwar #warhistory #_germanww2_ #worldwar2history #germany🇩🇪 - @world.war_2_germany on Instagram

British (Scottish) soldiers from the Seaforth Highlanders with a dog in a trench at La Gorgue near Loos, August 5, 1915. . Colourised by @colorful_history. . Today 105 years ago, on September 25, 1915 the British launched the Battle of Loos. . In the autumn of 1915 the Allies planned offensives along the Western Front, with the objective of breaking the trench stalemate and pushing the Germans out of France. The main assault would be launched in Champagne by the French, who would also attack further north in Artois, being supported by a British assault at Loos-en-Gohelle also in Artois. . British Commander-in-Chief Sir John French and British First Army Commander Sir Douglas Haig did not want to attack at Loos, as the Germans held the high-ground there and were further fortifying their positions. But the French commanders ruled against them and had the last say in the end. The British would attack at Loos. . French and Haig were at a disagreement regarding the position of reserves. Haig wanted them close to the frontlines, ready for deployment, while French wanted them further behind as he wasnt planning to deploy them, as they were reserves. . The reserves ended up being closer to the frontlines than French wanted, but further away than Haig wanted. Haig was also frustrated by the lack of artillery ammunition, but the attack had to be launched. . On September 25, 1915 the British attacked the German positions at Loos. In this battle the British used chlorine gas for the first time. In some places the wind changed and the gas flew back at the British. The British soldiers, unable to see with the early gas masks, naively took them off and were gassed. . In many places the British artillery had failed to cut the German wire, and German machine-guns and artillery inflicted heavy losses on the British soldiers advancing through open fields. . The British managed to take the town of Loos-en-Gohelle, but due to inefficient communication between French and the frontlines, as well as the reserves being too far away, Haigs troops were unable to exploit the success. On October 8 the attack was called off. ⬇️CONTINUED BELOW⬇️ . #ww1#wwi#worldwar1#history#worldwarone - @ww1photos_info on Instagram

“A United States Marine taking part in a patrol from the 1st Marine Division stops for a moment to glance at the corpse of an Imperial Japanese Army soldier while the patrol moves south through a small village on the advance towards Shuri Castle on Okinawa, May 24th, 1945. ___ Shuri Castle was the ancient seat of the Ryukyuan Kingdom, built in the 15th century, and it was almost completely destroyed during the vicious fighting of the Battle of Okinawa in the spring and summer of ‘45.” ___ During World War 2, the Imperial Japanese Army set up their headquarters underground the castle. By early 1945, they had established complex lines of defense and communications in the area around Shuri, and across the southern part of Okinawa as a whole. ___ By May 1945, the Americans were held back by the strong defenses the Japanese had laid down only months before around Shuri Castle. On May 25th, the US Battleship Mississippi shelled the castle for three days and by May 27th it was ablaze. ___ On May 29th, the 1st Battalion of the 5th Marines were tasked with capturing Shuri Castle. Seizing the castle represented both strategic and psychological blows for the Japanese and was a milestone in the Okinawa campaign. But the Japanese had conducted a skillful retreat days before. ___ Due to the retreat of Japanese forces, US Marines secured the castle against little resistance. Under the cover of darkness and aided by the monsoon storms, Japanese forces moved nearly 30,000 soldiers into its last defense line on the Kiyan Peninsula, which ultimately led to the greatest slaughter on Okinawa in the latter stages of the battle. ___ Colorized by @rwhitecolor. ___ #worldwar2 #worldwartwo #worldwar2history #history #warhistory #axis #allied #warphotography #soldiers #generals #ww2dailyhistory #military #militaryhistory #worldwar2incolor #ww2daily #combat #combathistory #axishistory #alliedhistory #pacificwar #marines #japanese #okinawa #thepacificwar #okinawacampaign - @fuehrer_of_photography on Instagram

British soldiers of the 12th Battalion, East Surrey Regiment, are working in a communication trench in Ploegsteert Wood. 11th June 1917, Battle of Messines. —— In the part closer to the camera in the trench, you see 4 soldiers looking at a map, perhaps preparing for their next advance. —— Lots of their equipment hangs on the sides of the trench, including a PH Hood gas mask bag. This was rather unusual as but that time in 1917 almost all troops would’ve just had the newer Small Box Respirator, meaning one of those soldiers still was using the PH Hood. —— The PH Hood/Helmet (PH meaning Phenate Hexamine) was an early British Gas mask of WW1, introduced in July 1915 after the ghastly Second Battle of Ypres which brought in chemical warfare. A funny part about this gas mask is when you use the exhale valve it makes a funny sound. Could France really beat Germany in ? The Saar offensive. In 1939, Germany invaded Poland which, according to legend, was abandoned by the British wanting peace at all cost and the French cowards. This is of course false, but there are also reasons why the French did not attack Germany in September 1939. First of all, it should be said that for the possible French attack which will take place in the Saar, only 9 divisions could be liberated, consequence of the total lack of preparation of the French army, both in mobilization and in equipment. When they crossed the German border on September 7, the French, after advancing a few kilometers, came across thousands of mines, bridges and cut trees and other traps. The losses are so important in the minefields that the French are sometimes forced to retreat. The French only fell on abandoned villages where everything important was destroyed and a few German soldiers who inflicted however 2000 losses on the French who only had time to approach the Siegfried line. In mid-September, faced with the weak advance of the units engaged and the situation in Poland, the French high command ordered its troops to fall back behind the Maginot line. We will now see why the French did not rush regardless of the losses towards the interior of Germany. First of all, you have to understand the French strategy. They come out traumatized by the 1st world war and base their strategies on defense, behind the Maginot line which absorbed a significant part of the national budget. It is simply impossible for the French to abandon the Maginot line. In addition, on the German side, the defenses are well organized. The Siegfried line, although less powerful than the Maginot line, is still impressive for the french. Further south, the Rhine river and the mountains of the thick black forest prevent any intrusion. The 22 German divisions of Army Group C under General Van Leeb guarding the French border would have had ample time to delay, with limited assistance from the Siegfried Line, the French offensive, Belgium and the Netherlands being still neutral to the time.
