Pertempuran Stalingrad (23 Agustus 1942-2 Februari 1943)[7][8][9][10] adalah pertempuran besar Perang Dunia II di mana Nazi Jerman dan sekutunya melawan Uni Soviet untuk menguasai kota Stalingrad (sekarang Volgograd) di Rusia Selatan, di perbatasan timur Eropa.Ditandai dengan pertempuran jarak dekat dan serangan langsung terhadap warga sipil lewat serangan udara, sering dianggap sebagai yang terbesar dan pertempuran paling berdarah dalam sejarah peperangan.[11] Kerugian besar yang diderita Wehrmacht Jerman membuatnya bisa dibilang yang paling strategis dalam menentukan pertempuran di keseluruhan perang.[12] Ini adalah titik balik dalam panggung Perang Dunia II di Eropa.; Pasukan Jerman tidak pernah berinisiatif kembali di Timur dan menarik kekuatan militer yang luas dari Barat untuk menggantikan kerugian mereka.[13] Serangan Jerman untuk menaklukan Stalingrad dimulai pada akhir musim panas tahun 1942, menggunakan Tentara Keenam Jerman dan unsur Panzer Tentara ke empat. On September 17, 1944, the Allies launched a bold and dangerous operation they hoped would catapult their armies across the Rhine, into the heart of Germany, and end the war before Christmas. Following the Allied invasion of Normandy on June 6, Allied progress was soon measured in yards as they had to crawl their way through the thick hedgerows of the bocage country. Each small field was a set-piece battle; the Germans would expertly defend one and then retreat to another. However, General Omar Bradley designed a plan to break out of the hedgerows and get into the open country of France. His “Operation Cobra” unleashed a massive bombing campaign of the German front line units. It was followed by an assault designed to pierce the German defenses and unleash the new Third Army under General Patton to drive the Germans out of the Brittany peninsula. Patton’s troops swept across Brittany and then joined the rest of the Allies as they raced to the Meuse River and eventually reached Paris by late August. “A United States Marine taking part in a patrol from the 1st Marine Division stops for a moment to glance at the corpse of an Imperial Japanese Army soldier while the patrol moves south through a small village on the advance towards Shuri Castle on Okinawa, May 24th, 1945. ___ Shuri Castle was the ancient seat of the Ryukyuan Kingdom, built in the 15th century, and it was almost completely destroyed during the vicious fighting of the Battle of Okinawa in the spring and summer of ‘45.” ___ During World War 2, the Imperial Japanese Army set up their headquarters underground the castle. By early 1945, they had established complex lines of defense and communications in the area around Shuri, and across the southern part of Okinawa as a whole. ___ By May 1945, the Americans were held back by the strong defenses the Japanese had laid down only months before around Shuri Castle. On May 25th, the US Battleship Mississippi shelled the castle for three days and by May 27th it was ablaze. ___ On May 29th, the 1st Battalion of the 5th Marines were tasked with capturing Shuri Castle. Seizing the castle represented both strategic and psychological blows for the Japanese and was a milestone in the Okinawa campaign. But the Japanese had conducted a skillful retreat days before. ___ Due to the retreat of Japanese forces, US Marines secured the castle against little resistance. Japanese American crew from the 442nd Regimental Combat Team firing 105mm shells at German positions in support of an infantry attack near Bruyeres, France, 18 October 1944. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ The 442nd Regimental Combat Team was made up of mostly Japanese Americans from Hawaii and the internment camps on the mainland. The 442nd RCT fought in eight major campaigns and has been regarded as one of the best combat units on the battlefields of Italy and France. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ The 442nd Regiment is the most decorated unit for its size in U.S. military history, earning more than 18,000 awards in less than two years, including more than 4,000 Purple Hearts and 4,000 Bronze Star Medals, 8 Presidential Unit Citations and 21 Medals of Honor.
