TRIGGER ALERT: this post references personal experiences with sexual abuse. *** This first picture is my dear, dear friend @timferriss , when he was four years old, and the second is a picture of me at 11 or 12. These are pictures of us after suffering years of sexual abuse perpetrated by adults. Tim and I recently sat down to have a conversation about what it means to be abused as a child, how it has effected us over the years and our very different, but dogged paths to healing. I’ve never had a conversation like this before and it is one of the most vulnerable-making experiences of my life. But Tim and I both hope that sharing our individual experiences will help others in their own quest to re-take and re-make their lives. For anyone that is looking for resources, Tim has included a vast list in the post of our conversation, and all of this is linked in my bio. The third photo here is a collection of some of the books I’ve read to help me. Sexual violence is often considered shameful by the victims of these horrific crimes, and I know from my work with The Joyful Heart Foundation, aka @thejhf, (also an incredible resource) nothing can be further from the truth. Just over two weeks ago the world lost one of the best humans. In the midst of all of the chaos and turmoil and divisiveness and sickness and fear and politics and pain - the world stopped one day and my dear friend Mahtab passed from this realm to the next. She had danced her dance with cancer for nearly two years and she did it with grace and love and purpose and courage. Since that day I’ve been in between, really. In between sadness and now. In between purpose and nothing. In between everything there is to do and no focus or desire to do it. If you didn’t know Mahtab you missed out on one of the smartest, most ethical, most hard-working, most generous, decent, loving, curious, driven, wisest humans who ever lived. I first met Mahtab years ago when she was involved with the Minnesota Interactive Marketing Association. She was so poised and articulate that I was completely intimidated. I thought she was too smart, too together, too buttoned-up, too cerebral - to ever have any interest in me. We passed one another at industry events. We’d exchange friendly hellos. But I was too insecure to believe that I was good enough to be Mahtab’s friend. Turns out, I’m a fool. Over the years, Mahtab became one of my closest confidantes and dearest friends. She was kindred. A soul connection. I took for granted all of the late-night walks, the lengthy text exchanges, the dinners and lunches, the processing of work issues, and her guidance through all of the shifts in friendships and business relationships, and families and life. I took for granted that her wisdom and logic and calm demeanor would always be within reach. I never considered for a minute that Mahtab and I wouldn’t know each other into old age - each of us internet elders aging gracefully, or not. So, when Mahtab told me she’d been diagnosed with cancer just 23 months ago - I immediately burst into tears. My initial response was so selfish I was ashamed. I said ‘But, Mahtab. I feel like I just found you!’ In the last two years before Mahtab left us I realized a few things. Thank you so much for casting your votes on your favorite lighting in my last post! Between IG and Facebook, the amount of replies was overwhelming. Although I didn’t actually count the votes, by reading through the never ending lists, my unofficial impression is that renders A, B, L and P where the great winners! I then took render A, did a few tweaks on the lighting and a TON of tweaks on the model and rendered it in 4k square, 14 samples and my Threadripper 3970x STILL took 7+ hours to render, because the more you have, the more you crank the settings until it’s back to slug mode... 😒 GPU render would be the way to go, but that will have to wait. A single 24GB card would not cut it for me. My scenes are about 30GB+. but we will see if I can score one in the future, so for now, CPU it is. I will do a last pass on details and call it done over the weekend, when I should post final renders of many angles, so stay tuned. All textures hand painted (polypainted in ZBrush, HD mode). Louis Kahn, is an American architect whose buildings, characterized by powerful, massive forms, made him one of the most discussed architects to emerge after World War II. Kahn designed private residences and worker housing in the 1930s and ’40s. After a fellowship at the American Academy in Rome (1950), Kahn carried out his first important work: the Yale University Art Gallery (1952–54) which marked a notable departure from his International Style buildings of the previous decade. In 1957 Kahn was named professor of architecture at the University of Pennsylvania. His Richards Medical Research Building (1960–65) at the university is outstanding for its expression of the distinction between “servant” and “served” spaces. The servant spaces (stairwells, elevators, exhaust and intake vents, and pipes) are isolated in four towers, distinct from the served spaces (laboratories and offices). Laboratory buildings had been designed this way for decades; Kahn elevated this practical feature into an architectural principle. He combined the servant-served typology with inspiration from classical and medieval architecture, basic geometric forms, and an elegant, expressive use of such familiar materials as concrete and brick. Designed by Kahn the Four Freedoms Park in Roosevelt Island NY a triangular shaped Park overlooking Manhattan. Happy Birthday Norman, we miss you! ❤️ Today marks 100 years since the birth of Norman Dewis OBE, the Jaguar test driver and engineer who developed dozens of Jaguars including the E-type. He was Britains greatest test driver, completing more than one million test miles at average speeds over 100mph during his career. Also, Norman Dewis played a pivotal role in the development of the revolutionary Jaguar / Dunlop disc braking system. More than all that though, he was a lovely man, a great friend and supporter of the JEC and an incredible talent. Beautiful souls come and go from our lives, and as much as it hurts, it feels like there’s little we can do about it. This week, I’m dedicating Australiana By Night to the talented, charming, and much loved Mike Noga who has left a hole in our hearts with his early departure from this mortal coil. I’ll be playing songs from his solo albums, some also playing songs from other beloved Australian songwriters and musicians who have left us too soon, Spencer P Jones, Brian Henry Hooper, Rowland S. Howard, Conway Savage, Mick Hart, Dave McComb, Grant Mclennan, Bon Scott, Chris Wilson, James Cruikshank (The Cruel Sea), Stevie Plunder (The Plunderers), Andy Lewis (The Gadflys), Cheyne Gelagin (The Simpletons), and BATERZ. Yes, this is a list of men. Young to middle aged men dying from disease, heart attack, drugs, alcohol, suicide...how do we take better care of these beautiful, sensitive souls while they are still with us? We need our poets more than ever, and we need to hold onto men who live with empathy, compassion and love, not lose them before their time. Could we give them something to hold onto? To help them love themselves more, to give back, to lend a hand, or an ear, even when it isn’t asked for. I am really directing these questions to other men, women have been taking care of us for years. It’s time for us to step up and support each other better, to transform the culture between men, to make it a place of support and care, rather than self loathing and competition. It’s not going to be easy. But I’m committed to it. I’d welcome anyone who would like to discuss this. And any other artist suggestions for my radio show are welcome too. He invented the first alternating current (AC) motor and developed AC generation and transmission technology. Some things are differences of opinion. Like how best to allocate our taxes. Or whether auto-tune mumble rap is better than Dr Dre, Public Enemy, Cypress, Busta, Cube or a Tribe Called Quest. Then there are things that really aren’t just differences of opinion. Like when George W Bush took us to war against Iraq based on lies. When people like Ellen or anyone else (no matter how much we might love them) takes pictures hugging Bush or takes the tone deafening stance that Bush just has different “beliefs”, that is an assault on any sort of “kindness”. We have never had a bi-partisan investigation and prosecution of the crime of the Iraq War. Nor have we done so for the genocide of Native Americans. Nor have we made reparations for slavery. So it is no surprise we have not done a moral inventory for the war crime of the Iraq invasion. The hundreds of thousands killed. The torture. The killed and maimed Americans. The festering fertile ground for the creation of ISIS. Only kicking and screaming do we on occasion amend our laws to accommodate basic human dignities in the face of decades of atrocity. But the people and institutions that were really responsible — nor their victims and the children ever see justice. When you defend friendship with a war criminal that is not a difference of opinion. That is supporting the sick disease of denial and racism that’s plagued America since its inception — and is sociopathic elitism at its grossest. For shame. #MTV said they were narrowcasting in 1983, meaning targeting a certain audience but thats not really what they were doing. They were narrow in selecting the artists and comfortably discriminating. It still happens today in 2020, only a different kind. BET was once accused of calling hip-hop group Little Brother too intelligent for their audience. A lot of labels and bigger media outlets often dont care about the depth of the music, just the numbers so theyll follow trends and formulas. This is understandable to a degree, theyre businesses, but its the innovative businesses that see long term success. #DavidBowie knew how to stay innovative.
