Been late to update (been waiting till the right time to protect our brave allies). This is from 4th of July (but in the works since even earlier—back in March)! a couple months ago, our networks of nurses and doctors were being walked out in handcuffs for passing out PPE so we had to start an underground bottom-top network (the real roots of PPEforHCP) of free donations that even included the US Veterans Affairs. A few of us on OSCMS spun off a Signals group to design (medical) protective equipment for peaceful protesters (inspired by Hong Kong) as soon as June 1; this was to keep our community healthy/reduce hospital resource impacting (on the bigger scope/support freedom, liberty, and justice). We couldn’t do it without your support, the support of a few brave individuals going against the grain (sacrificing the REAL threat of getting fired for not “staying in their lane” or often worse) in US Customs, UPS, SJPD, hospitals, FEMA, fire department, Hong Kong/mainlanders, etc. Advocates for health and good doctors/nurses and frontlines come from all sides. PPE : Personal Protective Equipment This one is especially important for everyone doing clinicals during this pandemic. So let’s review! What are the steps to stay safe ? ➡️➡️ Swipe to see steps Donning: this is to put ON (dONning) PPE 🧼 While Donning PPE, there’s one step for hand hygiene! This is because everything you put on after the first step is sterile/clean. ➕ If you are donning an N95. Adjust the mask and then perform a seal check before moving on to the next step! ➕ Gloves go last and should go over the the wrists of the gown. Doffing: this is to take OFF (dOFFing) 🧼 There are 3 steps for hand hygiene here! ➕ You start with the dirtiest piece of equipment; Gloves. ➕ You do not need to perform hand hygiene between the eyewear removal and the mask. This is IF, you remove the equipment with proper technique. This means taking eyewear off from the sides and the mask off from the straps; never coming in contact with the contaminated field. ➕ You want to minimize any incidence of your hands touching an exposed area of the PPE ✏️ Note: You won’t need all equipment at all times. Don & Doff in this order, but only use PPE that each situation requires! Stay safe & pay attention every time you Don and Doff; even when you hear multiple call bells at once. When finished with your shift, please place these items in the trash, not recycling bin. What are the unforeseen consequences of not doing so? ⠀ ⠀ If your mask goes into a recycling bin: One of two things: either a member of our team will have to take extra time to fish it out of the bin (which is not safe for them), or it will cause trouble at the recycling facility by getting stuck somewhere or contaminating a load enough to cause it all to go to landfill. ⠀ ⠀ If your mask gets thrown on the ground: It will likely end up in a waterway at some point, releasing chemicals into the water as it breaks down and likely getting mistaken for food by an animal.⠀ ⠀ By properly disposing of your PPE, you are helping keep our campus and environment safe. Alabamas statewide mask mandate will continue. Gov. Kay Ivey announced the order that was set to expire Oct. 2 is being extended through Nov. 8. The governor said improvements in coronavirus case numbers since the order was put in place and the upcoming election were factors in her decision. “I want everyone to (vote) and to be able to do it safely, Ivey said. The governor is encouraging voters to wear masks to the polls to protect themselves and poll workers. Ivey said shell be wearing a mask when she votes in November. Masks are not required to vote, according to the Alabama Secretary of State John Merrill. The new Safer at Home order has at least one change. If you are not used to paying attention to your hunger cues, trusting them, or feel that they are regularly blunted, you may want to consider eating for self-care on a schedule of every 2-4 hours. Remember, the most important thing you can do as an athlete is to get enough to eat. Use your sports dietitians as resources if assessing, honoring or trusting your hunger cues ever becomes confusing or challenging. To all WRUW listeners: In the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic that is sweeping the world right now, WRUW has been trying to bring comfort and normalcy to airwaves by not going off the air. Today we are shifting our operations to make it easier to keep our community safe from the virus: Starting today, **we have decided to temporarily cease our in-person broadcasting from Mather Memorial until further notice.** The decision was not easy to make. With this unprecedented situation on our hands, we needed to ensure the safety of our programmers was not being put in jeopardy by keeping up with normal station operations. The good news is that WERE NOT GOING SILENT. We will be using automation to play music from our digital library, still bringing the sound of WRUW to the airwaves. Right now those playlists are random, but we are working towards playing custom playlists made by the WRUW programmers you know and love in the days to come. Our programmers with access to at-home recording equipment will have the opportunity to remotely record their shows to play at the the regular time slot. We will keep our social media updated with any changes to these plans. WRUW is doing everything we can to keep our programmers safe while trying to provide the sounds our listeners love to hear. Ordinary glass panels can act as solar panels when a layer of nanoparticles is sandwiched between two panes. This could help us take advantage of solar energy in cities where space for solar panels may be limited. . “If we’ve done our job, no one will even know that they’re there,” says Hunter McDaniel at UbiQD, a materials manufacturing firm in the US. He and his colleagues have developed transparent solar panels that are indistinguishable from regular glass. . Test installations, involving panels that are 1 square metre in size, are under way in buildings in the US and the Netherlands. The panels have a power conversion efficiency of 3.6 per cent, a measure of how much sunlight is converted into electricity. Opaque solar panels, in comparison, have efficiencies between 15 and 20 per cent. . These transparent panels are made from two layers of glass glued together with a polymer that contains nanoparticles known as quantum dots. With a core of copper indium sulphide and a shell of zinc sulphide, these quantum dots are tiny semiconductors that can manipulate light. . When the nanoparticles are excited by exposure to UV light, they release photons that travel along the transparent panel towards its edge. The perimeter is fitted with solar cells, which convert the photons into electrical current. City Council passed a face covering ordinance during a special public hearing on August 31. The ordinance is effective immediately, and will remain in effect through January 2, 2021 unless otherwise repealed or extended. City Council has determined that to continue to reduce the spread and infection of COVID-19, it is in the interest of the health and safety of all Concord citizens, residents, visitors, businesses, and the employees of our City and businesses, to wear face coverings while inside a retail establishment. This includes, but is not limited to, department stores, drug stores, convenience stores, grocery stores, and retail or wholesale stores. “Face covering” is defined as a covering made of cloth, fabric, or other soft or permeable material, without holes, that covers at least the nose, mouth, and surrounding areas of the lower face. A face covering may be factory made, homemade, or improvised from ordinary household material. Customers (ages five and older) are required to wear a face covering at all times when inside a retail establishment. A face covering is not required to be worn by any person in which doing so may pose a risk for health-related reasons. However, in these cases, special effort should be taken to maintain physical distance of at least six feet from other individuals. Members of the public utilizing City trails, sidewalks and other pedestrian public ways, or public recreational lands, are strongly encouraged to wear face coverings when a physical distance of six feet cannot be maintained from other individuals, but not required.
