Ive been a Curly Girl for about two years now, and though Im not as dedicated as others, I am enjoying its benefits. It took me years to unlearn and move beyond the negative conditioning society associates with curly hair (its unruly, its messy and if you believe Bollywood, its not sanskaari). Years spent battling with hairdressers and others who didnt understand my hair and how it deserves to be treated. Being a #curlygirl changed my life in many ways. It taught me how to care for my hair and it gave me a newfound confidence in myself. This (unending) lockdown, the only discipline I practise is caring for my hair. The Islay Cask Company Lavatera ??? is a sample I wanted to share because it combines two of my favourite places in the world: Scotland & the Rhinegau in Germany. A 8 year old Caol Ila Whisky finished in a Pinot Noir Barrel from Balthasar Ress, a Winegut 40 miles from my home in Germany. Now for the Whisky. Bottled at a mighty 57% abv it packs a #whiskypunch! The sound of the Whisky got my taste buds excited but alas the balance, well: just doesn’t balance. The warm smokiness I love from the Caol Ila is hindered by the Red Wine finish, yet the finish doesn’t deliver a rich, chewy sweetness I was longing for. The flavour feels a little lost; like a disharmonised relationship which has either gone sour or needs longer to over come difficulties. Would I buy a €99 from The Islay Cask Company? Yes, but purely because of my relationship & love for the Rhinegau. For me, it’s a personal buy. 😂😂 Storytime! 🤭🤭 . I want to start off by saying that this post is in no way bashing hair stylists, I admire what you do and its actually something Id love to do 🤭😍 . I had been in Spain about a year or more and went to the hairdressers I always went to. The usual woman that cut my hair wasnt there but another woman cut my hair who had been working there since before I started going so I know she was experienced 😅 what happened or what went wrong? Im not entirely sure, maybe something got lost in translation or maybe she was just having a bad day.. We are human and we all have bad days and make mistakes no matter what profession were in or how long weve been doing it for 🤷🏻♀️ . I didnt have the courage to go back and ask for it to be fixed 😅 and I also felt scared to find a new hairdressers or go back and risk wasting more money and coming away unhappy. . I eventually decided to try cutting my hair myself last year, right around the time I started taking care of my waves 🤭 My mindset was: Ive got nothing to lose, if it turns out bad Ill get it fixed and if it turns out great then Ill be saving so much time and money doing it myself 😂 . Over the past year and a half I have tried modified versions of the unicorn cut and Ive tried the pigtail cut and I think Ive had similar results with each one Ive tried 🥰 . This is Erin. For over a year and a half, we have been working on transitioning from some heat damaged hair. The photo on the left was taken in April 2019. The photo on the right was taken this week. This is the first time that I did not find any straight pieces of hair, despite the amount of length taken off in the first cut. Mechanically damaged and chemically damaged hair must be nurtured. It’s so important to see your stylist regularly to help you devise a plan to get your hair back to being healthy unless you plan on shaving it all off 🤣 Stand alone @olaplex treatments are very helpful, getting a few inches cut at a time and learning how to manipulate your hair without heat to help it match the rest....these are just some of the ways to have a smooth transition. I’m so glad I take before and after photos. It’s so nice to see the progress even more than a year later. It also brings me joy and that’s what I’m holding onto especially with the climate of the world right now. - In 2017 I realized I have curly hair. In 2019 I figured out how to style it. Here is my journey.
What Helped Me The Most In This Journey⤵️ 1️⃣Knowing the three important factors to choose the right products for your hair. Find out your texture, density and hair porosity. I have a post about how you can determine these 3 factors in my highlights “how to choose products”. Go check it out. 2️⃣Paying attention to ingredients. Understanding how to read ingredient lists has transformed my curly hair journey. Knowing your hair is part of reading labels. This will save you so many trial and error fails because you can understand what you’re putting in your hair and how your hair responds to it. In my highlights by “ingredientlist” you see what to look for or to avoid. Check it out. 3️⃣Experimenting a lot. I follow the rule what will work for my hair doesn’t mean it will work for your hair. For example I have high porosity, medium density and fine hair. My hair likes coconut oil as a ingredient. It also occurs that another curly has the exact same properties of the hair but the hair doesn’t like not against coconot oil as an ingredient at all. So all I can say is pay attention to how your hair reacts with certain ingredients. Don’t follow the one rule you know your hair as the best. What helped you the most in this journey so far? You can still have long hair and have volume! It’s all about the haircut, the products and the styling. @workoutwithericanix has some of the BEST hair! It’s my favorite color and I always love making long hair bigger. She is also just such a joy to have into the studio- she’s funny, thoughtful, caring and so laid back. She just puts you at ease! - Day 1 CG! I used to find curls in the bottom layers of my hair and decided to see what happens if I really try to get the waves to come out.
- I did a big chop in October and have been slowly nursing my poor at-home bleach blonde hair, hot pink hair, and cherry coke hair back to health. Last night I didn’t use conditioner for the first time and I like the results, but my hair has been looking like the one on the right for a while :)
