Big money was already dropping in San Francisco electoral campaigns before #Salesforce founder Marc Benioff pledged his support of #PropositionC, and it continued to drop — mostly in opposition to the measure known as “Our City, Our Home.” Since then, Benioff has had a very public debate with #Square and #Twitter founder Jack Dorsey — on Twitter, of course — who contributed $125,000 to the No on C campaign, according to the latest reports from the City’s Ethics Commission. But Dorsey isn’t the only billionaire by The Bay throwing down big wads of cash. Square, the mobile payment company on which Dorsey also serves as CEO, forked over another $25,000 to the “no” side. Also, ride-hail titan #Lyft drove in $100,000, while online payment firm #Stripe deposited a whopping $419,000 so far to C’s opposition. As of October 25, the Chamber of Commerce-led bloc raised about $1.5 million from 16 people and organizations in hopes of defeating a measure that would house homeless people and provide housing services by means of a proposed gross receipts tax that could raise $300 million — a tax applicable only to companies making over $50 million annually. The “yes” side, minus Benioff and Salesforce’s $6.4 million contribution, generated about a half-million dollars, most of which is pooled by 145 other individuals and community-based organizations. Can stretching before training decrease muscle growth? - A 2017 study used a within-subject design to answer this question. The subject performed unilateral knee extensions for 4 sets to failure, twice per week for 10 weeks. For each subject, one leg performed those knee extensions without prior stretching, and one leg performed those knee extensions following some pretty intense static stretching before the first set: 2 sets of 25 seconds, at a discomfort level of 8 (on a 0-10 scale). - Strength gains were similar between conditions, but the legs in the non-stretching condition experienced larger increases in vastus lateralis cross-sectional area: 12.7 ± 7.2% v. 7.4 ± 3.7%. In fact, all but one of the subjects experienced more quad growth in their non-stretching leg. This difference in hypertrophy may have been driven by the effects of stretching on performance: subjects averaged almost seven more reps per session with their non-stretching leg. - The biggest takeaway ISN’T that stretching is bad. The biggest takeaway is that any stretching you do pre-training should not be intense enough or take place close enough to your working sets to negatively affect performance. If you do some light stretching, or if you stretch early in your warm-up (so performance has time to rebound before you start your work sets), you should be fine. - Study reviewed: Effect of the flexibility training performed immediately before resistance training on muscle hypertrophy, maximum strength and flexibility by Junior et al. - This study was previously reviewed in more depth in a 2017 issue of MASS. This letter is in no way directed to condemn the people, participants and artists who have taken part in the Rotterdam Pride, except for the threatening presence of the mentioned groups. 📢After Wednesday’s Pride network 010 meeting, in which representatives of some DIY non-profit queer organisations were invited to attend, while other voices like Resist their Reignbow, more critical of the Rotterdam Pride organisation were left out, we decided to reach out to the broader queer community and collectively write this letter. 📢During the Pride 010 Network meeting Pride Rotterdam was discussed. Many of the present organisations feel Rotterdam Pride has failed them and a big part of the LGBTQIA+ community. 📢For example by the presence of Dutch White Nationalists organisations such as Roze Leeuw and Pegida, both online and offline at Rotterdam Pride. Their racist and islamophobic ideology is against what we feel is one of the most important pillars of pride: inclusivity. While they were allowed to walk the Pride Walk under the banner of ‘free speech’, Reclaim Our Pride was physically and violently isolated from the march by the police and literally put in the back. 📢Furthermore the commercialisation of Rotterdam pride by, for example, partnering up with KPN, Unilever, ABN Amro. How does muscle activation in the bench press change with increasing loads? A 2017 study by Król and Golaś had subjects perform bench press reps with loads ranging from 70% to 100% of 1RM. The researchers used EMG to estimate muscle activation throughout the lift. The image above shows how pec, triceps, and anterior deltoid EMG changed between submaximal (70% of 1RM) and maximal loads. Overall, it suggests that muscle activation doesn’t increase similarly for all prime movers as loads increase. Specifically, the pecs may already be near maximal activation with submaximal (70%) loads, whereas the anterior deltoids, and especially the triceps, experience larger increases in activation as loads get heavier. One potential implication from this information is that specifically training the triceps may give you a bit more top-end “kick” when you’re attempting maximal lifts. Another potential implication is that bench press training for pec hypertrophy may be best accomplished with somewhat lower loads. If pec activation is near-max from the first rep of a set, even with moderate loads, training heavier (say, in the 5-8 rep range) may simply be sacrificing the number of highly stimulating reps you can accomplish for your pecs over the course of a workout. This man’s “research” has played a huge part in the anti-vaccine rhetoric for over two decades. I vividly remember Jenny McCarthy coming on Oprah and endorsing his claims. I sat there, jaw dropped, thinking, “this is going to change everything; this is really, really bad.” I knew, after looking into the study, that there’s no way it could be valid. Twelve people is not a study. Back in the day when I was in the lab, my studies included of hundreds of subjects, whether that be vials of virus, plates of cells, or (I’m sorry) many, many animals. Then I’d repeat, repeat, repeat, before ever putting out a peer-reviewed paper. Following that, several other labs would repeat my results to be sure my claims are not false. No other lab could reproduce Wakefield’s results. His paper changed everything. We’ve spent years trying to turn this around, but once something is out there, it’s hard to take it back. A 2017 meta-analysis by Williams and colleagues examined all of the research comparing periodized and non-periodized training, finding that periodized training tends to produce larger strength gains (d = 0.43). After further adjusting for nested effects funnel plot asymmetry, the effect size decreased (d = 0.23 ± 0.05) but was still significant. In other words, periodized resistance training tends to cause larger strength gains than non-periodized training, but the overall effect is pretty small. Simple, right? Not necessarily. A drawback of periodization research is that periodized groups generally get to train at higher peak intensities than non-periodized groups. In other words, a non-periodized group may train with 75% loads for 9 weeks, while a periodized group may train with 60% loads for 3 weeks, 75% for 3 weeks, and 90% for three weeks. Overall, volume and average intensity are matched, but only the periodized group gets the opportunity to train with near-max loads before post-training testing. In other words, the studies may not be testing the effects of periodization itself, but rather the effects of peak training intensity. A pair of studies from Antretter and colleagues (google “Antretter Hatfield System and they should pop up) are the only studies comparing periodized versus non-periodized training with volume, average intensity, and peak intensity matched. They did so by having the non-periodized group train at multiple intensities within each training session. Those studies found that periodized training didn’t lead to larger strength gains than non-periodized training. In other words, periodization may not INDEPENDENTLY improve strength gains. However, periodizing training gives you more flexibility with training designs. In other words, periodizing your training is probably still a good idea, but you shouldn’t treat it like a magic bullet. This study was previously reviewed in more depth in a 2017 issue of MASS. Reposted from @guardian: @oxfaminternational and the Stockholm Environment Institute have released a new report and its not flattering for the wealthiest 1% of the population. It found that they were responsible for emitting more than twice as much carbon dioxide as the poorer half of the world between 1990-2015. The richest 10% of the global population, comprising about 630 million people, were responsible for about 52% of global emissions over the 25-year period, the study showed. Globally, the richest 10% are those with incomes above about $35,000 (£27,000) a year, and the richest 1% are people earning more than about $100,000. The report argues that, if left unchecked in the next decade, the carbon emissions of the world’s richest 10% would be enough to raise levels above the point likely to increase temperatures by 1.5C, even if the rest of the world cut their emissions to zero immediately. Introduce an added cost to luxury emissions such as private jets, SUVs or super yachts. Use the extra cash to fund universal social protection, health and care. 3.
