The news of Ruth Bader Ginsburg passing is heartbreaking & my thoughts go out to her friends & family. And as we grieve, we must also keep going. This is what those who fought the good fight would want from those of us who are still here to fight. We must remain focused on what we must continue to fight for. We must not give up. We can not afford to get knocked down & to not get up again. 2020 has been rough beyond measure but so will 2021 & beyond if we don’t realize the history & the patterns of violence that led us here. Things won’t just be better with a new year—the problem isn’t 2020, it’s the systems that have continued on from b4 1619 to 2020, and will continue on beyond 2020 if the work for real & sustainable change remains undone. And it won’t be paintings of Black Lives Matters in the streets that will get us there...that ain’t it. 2020 didn’t just happen in a vacuum. There are generations of crimes against humanity that we’re experiencing the impacts of today. And the global crisis of COVID-19 has magnified & exacerbated the disparities that exist in every system & structure in our county & globally. From mass incarceration, housing insecurity, wage gaps, inequitable education, food apartheid, medical racism and so much more. It’s all been there for generations & we can’t blame it or attribute it to 2020–when this year is over all of these problems will remain if we’re not getting to the root & dismantling the systems that created the outcomes we are experiencing today. Which is why we must not stop this work. We must keep fighting. It may seem like the losing team is humanity bc of the gross history of dehumanization that has led to this point, but we must always choose humanity. We must remember that it’s white supremacy & the other forms of oppressive systems that sever the humanity & connection within us & it is the work of anti-racism & all that comes with it that humanizes us & unites us. As LGBTQ+ Filipino/a/xs in Canada, we recognize our rights and privileges that our LGBTQ+ kapatids in the Philippines do not have, while also understanding that our struggles are linked. The celebration of LGBTQ+ resistance here in the diaspora cannot happen without fighting for the liberation of our LGBTQ+ kapatids and of all Filipino people in the Philippines. As COVID-19 cases continue to increase rapidly in the Philippines and the heightened fear, we think of those who are stuck with homophobic and transphobic family members, LGBTQ+ families who are denied assistance because they are not a recognized as a “traditional family”, LGBTQ+ workers who lost their jobs like those from ABS-CBN, and the many other struggles of LGBTQ+ people across classes, sectors, and the country. But we also know our people back home won’t give up easily and we have fierce and militant kasamas who are fighting back and speaking up!⁣ ⁣ It is a big lie that the Philippines is one of the most LGBT-friendly places in the world. LGBTQ+ people in the Philippines are not protected by the state and are denied protection no matter how many rainbow flags are raised on the streets and businesses celebrating Pride every June with their rainbow products. Until today, 20 years later since it was first filed, LGBTQ+ Filipinos are still fighting for the SOGIE or Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity and Expression Equality bill or the Anti-Discrimination bill. Duterte himself has perpetuated homophobia by saying that being gay is a disease that can be cured, has repeatedly used gay as an insult, and would not recognize same-sex marriage as the president of a predominantly Catholic country. Despite all of this, we recognize the efforts over the years of establishing support and services for LGBTQ+ Filipinos, by the people for the people.⁣ ⁣ Just last June 26, members of Bahaghari, GABRIELA, and other allied organizations were unlawfully arrested and detained by the Philippine National Police for peacefully protesting in Quezon City. Advocates and family members hold a vigil in honor of Victor Ray Cruz, an inmate at the Metropolitan Correctional Center who died of coronavirus.⁣ ⁣ In a new story, @maya.gauri lays out how lax procedures and failure to properly quarantine inmates has helped fuel the massive, deadly spread of COVID-19 within the Metropolitan Correctional Center downtown.⁣ ⁣ One key decision that appears to have facilitated the spread of the virus within the facility happened when a local hospital recommended that instead of bringing an inmate in for a procedure, medical professionals do it at the jail with phone support from the hospital. The inmate was brought to the hospital regardless, and wasn’t quarantined upon his return. In coordination with the start of fall term at Linn-Benton Community College and Oregon State University, the Linn-Benton Loop and Albany Transit System will restore most previously run routes and hours of service on Wednesday, September 23, 2020. Routes and hours of service have been temporarily reduced since March due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The transit systems in Linn and Benton counties are currently operating under Level 2 of the Governor’s re-opening plan and Oregon Health Authority (OHA) guidance. Under Level 2, public transit buses are required to limit the number of passengers on board to maintain three feet of social distancing. Face coverings are required for passengers. OHA additionally requires social distancing between the bus drivers and passengers which means buses will continue to load and unload passengers through the back doors and fares will not be collected. Individuals with disabilities requiring mobility devices may continue to load through the front door ramp. Protesters suffered...injuries from chemical agents, blast balls, flash bangs, batons, and rubber and plastic bullets. These weapons caused deep bruising and scarring, permanent hearing loss, bleeding, brain injuries and burns from chemical agents. Open and unsanitary landfills contribute to contamination of drinking water and can cause infection and transmit diseases. The dispersal of debris pollutes ecosystems and dangerous substances from electronic waste or industrial garbage puts a strain on the health of urban dwellers and the environment. As we go about our everyday life, it is important to ensure minimisation of waste. Where waste cannot be avoided, recovery of materials and energy from waste as well as remanufacturing and recycling waste into usable products should be the second option. Recycling leads to substantial resource savings. For example, for every tonne of paper recycled, 17 trees and 50 per cent of water can be saved. LAST NIGHT ❤️ Very special words by @christmasonthestreets Another 330 meals went out yesterday to mark WEEK 6 of the #AUnitedFront Initiative and the official meal count, inclusive of all charities involved, is at 14,760! There were a number of conversations that took place last night that reminded us of the importance of this work. One of our friends, currently staying in crisis accommodation said, “We don’t deserve this. We don’t deserve you coming out and giving us these meals every night.” When we asked him why he thought he didn’t deserve it he said, “I’ve stuffed up so many times. My family, my friends – none of them will ever take me back but you guys spoil us. Even when you could have stopped because of the restrictions, you make sure we’re looked after every single night.” We reminded him that we’re all just doing the best we can with the cards we’ve been dealt in life; all of us have stuffed up at one point and none of us are perfect because we’ve all needed a number of chances at some stage. He looked up and said, “It sounds silly but the truth is, you coming out here every day since we’ve been given these rooms has been what has kept me going. It’s not even about the food. You show us that there are still people who care and that is enough to help me get through, even on the hardest of days. I look forward to seeing you every week.” The truth is, this feeling is mutual. His words are what keep us going. Reminding him that he always has been, and always will be, worthy of a meal was our pleasure. Him reminding us of the importance of this movement was an even bigger blessing. For as long as the world needs COTS, we will be serving on the frontlines. Once again, we want to thank every single person who has contributed to keeping this initiative going. The Rahbar Intiative is a project started by a group of Pakistani students passionate about improving social mobility in Pakistan. While applying to Colleges abroad, many of us have felt that the experience tends to exclude students from low-income backgrounds who often are unable to obtain the guidance and support that they need to apply to their dream schools. A second wave of COVID-19 outbreak in China is inevitable, said Zhang Wenhong, Chinas leading infectious disease specialist and head of the Shanghai COVID-19 medical team, despite that the Chinese mainland has reported zero new domestic COVID-19 cases since August 16. ⠀ We should make plans for at least another year, Zhang said. ⠀ At a forum hosted by Antai College of Shanghai Jiao Tong University on Sunday, Zhang analyzed the situation and challenges China faces regarding epidemic prevention. As second waves of COVID-19 have emerged in a few European countries, Zhang noted that China will also witness an inevitable resurgence of the virus, which is expected to happen in the coming winter. ⠀ Currently, China is at risk of importing the epidemic. In the past few days, inspection teams from Beijing have visited each province to inspect the local COVID-19 prevention system, so as to prevent scattered imported cases from spreading widely, Zhang said. ⠀ According to Zhang, the non-fatality of COVID-19 is what makes it fatal to global prevention. The coronavirus is highly contagious, but its fatality rate is relatively low, unlike Ebola, SARS, or the H1N9 avian flu. In Zhangs opinion, the low fatality rate has led to the continued spread of the virus around the world. ⠀ Zhang expected that the pandemic will continue for quite a long time. A less contagious virus will always be around. This includes 8 excessive force complaints, 6 racial profiling & discrimination complaints, and 5 harassment complaints. Yesterday, we were able to push the San Diego County Board of Supervisors to make important amendments to the budget before it was finalized. Because of community efforts, many families will be able to benefit from rental assistance, tenants will have access to more counseling and legal services, some essential workers will be able to receive stipends, and more County materials will be available in people’s native languages. But our fight is far from over. When we look at this budget overall, it still does not meet the needs of our communities. We need a Board of Supervisors that is connected to the people they represent, and that is willing to address the racial and economic disparities in our County. Rally and Outreach in Richmond Hill, Queens. Together, we counted over 300 households (approximately 900-1000 individuals). Currently, only 51% of Richmond Hill and South Ozone Park has responded to the 2020 Census, which means these already under-resourced and underfunded communities will only get half the federal funding for housing, healthcare, schools, and so much more. The action centered the voices of documented and undocumented LGBTQ people, Indo-Caribbean, Afro-Caribbean, and South Asian immigrants that live in these thriving multicultural communities, as call-to-action to be heard and build political power and respect by being counted in the 2020 Census. During the first Match Day celebration of its kind, the UCSF School of Medicine class of 2020 logged onto their computers the morning of Friday, March 20 to be greeted by a video from Catherine Lucey, MD, MACP, Executive Vice Dean and Vice Dean for Medical Education. . “We couldn’t be prouder of the matches you have made. Most importantly, we couldn’t be prouder of what outstanding UCSF medical students you have been throughout your pioneering careers here – as the first Bridges class and as the first class to ever have a virtual Match Day. This virtual celebration wasn’t exactly in the plans, but I know you will adapt to this change just as you have so many changes along the way. And you will do so with the incredible wisdom, strength, and professionalism you have shown us since you started.” . This year, all 158 graduating UCSF School of Medicine students matched to clinical training, internship, or residency programs at hospitals. Sixty-five, or 41 percent of the class, were accepted to fields related to primary care, including internal medicine, family medicine, and pediatrics, and the other 59 percent matched in non-primary care specialties, including emergency medicine, anesthesiology, and obstetrics & gynecology. . Seventy-three percent of the class will continue their medical education journeys in the Bay Area and across the state. The rest of the class will complete their training in leading hospitals in 18 other states across the country! . This week is the first week of teaching for many educators, and BIPOC teachers of 2020 are carrying a huge load. 🎒 Tone policing 🎒 Constantly proving our worth 🎒 Racism 🎒 Micro aggressions (which is still racism) 🎒 Paren’t fears and concerns 🎒 The homophobic and transphobic structures embedded education (especially harmful to queer BIPOC educators). 🎒 Personal mental health & anxiety 🎒 Our own fear for our health and life 🎒 Under resourced and/or no info from state leadership 🎒Digital barriers: Having to transition back and forth to virtual and in person 🎒 Responsibility for public health and economy, esp now after educators are listed as essential workers. 🎒 Being expected to teach, and work efficiently while our community members are being murdered and fighting for our liberation. 🎒 All the while being a part of our own families. These are just some of the loads BIPOC teachers are carrying on their backs. How are we supporting educators in our community? Educators, how are we supporting and caring for ourselves?
