It seems fitting that the fireworks in Los Angeles are still booming as I remember this enormous and energetic soul; a flurry of rainbow heat trailing behind as he ascends to be with Jeff and the angels. Iāll miss his smile, his laugh, and most of all his radiance. I spent hours as a kid poking through the stuff in his garage, nothing short of fascinated by this retired drag-racer/ boxer/ navy man/ preacher / lays potato chip salesman with old sailor tattoos and a collection of cowboy boots. Thereās so much I still donāt know, but Iām thankful to have experienced the magnitude of your presence Delbert Sepkovic, and will miss it for the rest of my days. Ive been a builder all my life. I started working along side my Dad at just 3 or 4 yrs old. I was always beside him with a hammer in my hand, just like you see here. Taking a break from Instagram was very timely as my Pawpaw passed away this past Tuesday. Spending more time with my family was exactly what was needed. I will miss so much about him but am thankful I can grieve with hope. Iām so thankful for my family, and my mom in particular, who reminded us to call our pawpaw, send him thank you cards, and to cherish his unsolicited (but wise) advice. š¤ Iām thankful for how he shaped my mom and how she raised me and now how I raise my boys. He loved making people laugh, working hard, and giving holiday gifts. Today marks 10 years since my dad passed away. Itās still probably the day I can recall the clearest in my mind, and I often thought about what it would feel like 10 years from then. What I can say is that thereās not a day that goes by that I donāt think about my dad. I could honestly write even more of a novel, but will leave it at people have said that grief is a life long process and I think thatās true. The pain never goes away, but you learn to grow with it and if you allow it, will hopefully help positively shape you into who you want to be. In the past 10 years Iāve come to know too many friends & acquaintances who have lost their parents or close loved ones as well. But Iām here to say that I know first hand those people will always be with you, and continue to help you shape your life. I was thinking of a way to honor my dad and ultimately decided on a donation and came across a great charity that I wanted to share in case anyone else may be looking to honor a loved one. For Peteās Sake Cancer Respite Foundation provides cancer patients and their families with opportunities to take a family vacation or have the funds to travel to see loved ones when they may otherwise not be able to. I landed on this because of its direct impact, and when I think back to this day 10 years ago, and the days that followed, I remember how much it meant to me to have the support of my friends and family, and know how important that time with the people you care about truly can be. I also encourage everyone to try to share love and kindness on a general daily basis. I think itās true that everyone is fighting their own battles no matter what they may be, and the world, especially now, can always use some extra love - whether thatās on a larger scale, or even the smaller scale of choosing to be kind in everyday situations. This is one of my favourite photos from my childhood. I dont know if I was actually there when my little sister Stephanie got into the eggs and mom snapped this photo, but Ive turned the pages of our photo albums so many times, I feel like I was. My sweet sister passed away recently. She got hit by a car while she was out for a run. She was only 31. She had just bought a house and had so many things lined up for her. She loved her career and was passionate about her horses. Im still grappling with the fact that she is gone. Just like that. There will be no new memories. No chance to call her up and ask her about her home renos, or get tips on how to curl my hair. I have to keep reminding myself is that nothing can take away what we shared. The memories I have will last. Im so thankful that my mom took so many photos of us when we were growing up. Were sending our warmest congratulations to Dr. Mark Hosler, associate professor of music, who retired this spring after 44 years of teaching. Mark has been an amazing advocate and teacher of the arts at Clemson for over 20 years and his leadership and insights will be greatly missed. Iāve had a wonderful teaching career, and Iāve loved every minute of it. As I reflect on it, Iāve been so fortunate to encounter so many outstanding students and colleagues along the way. The performing arts faculty and staff, the thousands of students Iāve taught over the years and the hundreds of high school teachers and support staff members Iāve served with have all provided me with so many fond memories. During his breaks, he would ask newly arrived immigrants to sit for an intimate portrait. In total, he took around 200 photos. ā£ Ellis Island was active for more than 60 years, from 1892 to 1954. During that time, more than 12 million people passed through, often escaping political and social turmoil back home. Today, we celebrate what would have been Dr. Pete Dawsons 90th birthday. It has nearly been a full year since we lost this incredible man. As we all look back to what Pete meant to us, what he did for us, were also reminded of what he would be telling us during these difficult times, what would be his words of encouragement? A Piece of History: š½ Today we were visited by Frances, granddaughter to John Miller, the man who built the building that now houses Le MarcheĢ, in 1904. She brought us this photograph, which pictures her father, Ian, as a baby with her grandmother, Annie Miller, outside 4393 St. George St, in 1920. When Pascal and Janaki restored the building to what it is now, they removed layers of stucco and linoleum to reveal the original siding, floors, and beautiful fireplaces built by Francesā grandfather centuries ago. Even then, in 1915, the space functioned as John Miller Grocery and still lives as our market today.
