On this day, 75 years ago in the Pacific, my father, U.S. Army Cpl. Paul E. Poetter, listened over the radio as the Second World War officially ended on the deck of the USS Missouri. Pride and optimism poured from his pen on September 2, 1945, as he wrote to his sweetheart, Willie Mae Lewis—my mother—with the breaking news: the war was over. This year, as Ive written about my fathers letters home, Ive often thought about his steadfast hope and patience, as we seek our own victory over a stubborn foe and trust that happiness hovers on the horizon. And in the distance, in my fathers words and my mothers replies, I see the beginnings of SCAD—two dreamers with grit and moxie who would one day empower me to create something seismic. Nellie Griswold Francis founded the only Black women suffrage organization in Minnesota, is credited with writing and shepherding the anti-lynching statute that passed in Minnesota in 1921, twice served as a delegate to state suffrage conferences, and was quite likely the first Black woman to lobby the MN Legislature. A multitalented woman of action, Nellie Griswold Francis worked tirelessly for women’s suffrage and civil rights. Nellie professed in a speech published in The Appeal in 1921: “Your children will reap the harvest of our solidarity — of our determination to stand together, to fight together, and, if needs be, to die together.” She was committed to advancing women’s rights, especially the right to vote and the rights of Black women. Her founding of the Everywoman Suffrage Club (eventually the Everywoman Progressive Council) in 1914 helped ensure that the voices of BIPOC women were also being heard. Her work with the NAACP, the Urban League and the National Association of Colored Women’s Clubs - not to mention her friendship with Booker T. Washington and Ida B. Wells - are a few of many instances of her leadership and outreach. Nellie would also go on to serve as president of Pilgrim Baptist’s Ladies’ Aid Society, personally secure money from Andrew Carnegie for a new church organ, form a successful singing group (the Folk Song Coterie), buy a house in a white St. Paul neighborhood despite threatening pushback from the neighbors, meet with two U.S. presidents, travel to Liberia with her husband William T. Francis (MN’s first Black diplomat), and take part in many efforts aimed at achieving women’s suffrage. Want to learn more? Tune in to the premiere of “Citizen” on Monday, October 5th, TPT’s new documentary on the history of women’s suffrage in Minnesota. 📷:: Nellie Francis, ca. 1924. 1904 ST. LOUIS EXPO: The ice cream cone made an unexpected debut at Expo, a concept born by chance between two neighboring food vendors at the fair. When an ice cream vendor ran out of serving dishes, a concessionaire selling waffle-like pastries rolled up one of his desserts into the shape of a cone as a quick solution. Topped with a scoop of ice cream, the ‘cornucopia, as it was called at the time, proved to be a lasting and tasty invention. #ExpoHistory #Expo1904 #USAExpo2020 #USAPavilion Image credit: Lyons family Missouri History Museum - @usaexpo2020 on Instagram

‘Disappointed, almost sad’, that ‘a girl of strong personality and promise should want to muddle around with sticky clay’. These were the apparent feelings of an unidentified painter, when Margaret Butler decided to pursue sculpture over her watercolour painting. Born in Greymouth in 1883, Margaret’s muddling, gained the admiration of Europes foremost sculptors in the 1920s. She exhibited works at the Salon des Tuileries, Société des artistes français, and the Société nationale des beaux-arts. In London, her bust The blind girl, was shown at the Royal Academy of Arts in 1935. Despite this international success, Butlers recognition back home wasnt a fair reflection of her talent. This was perhaps best expressed by art historian Mark Stoker when he noted: ..invisibility dogged Margaret Butler within her lifetime and beyond it. We should make amends and ‘out’ this remarkable talent in New Zealand art. Image 1: Margaret Butler working on The Shepherdess [unfinished], 1930, Paris, maker unknown.
