Civil Rights icon Ruby Bridges was born on this day in 1954 in Tylertown, Mississippi. In 1960, Bridges and three other first-graders—Gail Etienne, Tessie Prevost, and Leona Tate—were the first Black students to attend formerly all-white public schools in New Orleans. Etienne, Prevost, and Tate attended McDonogh 19, while Bridges was the only student of any race to attend William Frantz between January and May 1961. Federal marshals accompanied all four students to protect them from angry, sometimes violent, protestors. Happy Birthday Ruby! Nellie Griswold Francis founded the only Black women suffrage organization in Minnesota, is credited with writing and shepherding the anti-lynching statute that passed in Minnesota in 1921, twice served as a delegate to state suffrage conferences, and was quite likely the first Black woman to lobby the MN Legislature. A multitalented woman of action, Nellie Griswold Francis worked tirelessly for women’s suffrage and civil rights. Nellie professed in a speech published in The Appeal in 1921: “Your children will reap the harvest of our solidarity — of our determination to stand together, to fight together, and, if needs be, to die together.” She was committed to advancing women’s rights, especially the right to vote and the rights of Black women. Her founding of the Everywoman Suffrage Club (eventually the Everywoman Progressive Council) in 1914 helped ensure that the voices of BIPOC women were also being heard. Her work with the NAACP, the Urban League and the National Association of Colored Women’s Clubs - not to mention her friendship with Booker T. Washington and Ida B. Wells - are a few of many instances of her leadership and outreach. Nellie would also go on to serve as president of Pilgrim Baptist’s Ladies’ Aid Society, personally secure money from Andrew Carnegie for a new church organ, form a successful singing group (the Folk Song Coterie), buy a house in a white St. Paul neighborhood despite threatening pushback from the neighbors, meet with two U.S. presidents, travel to Liberia with her husband William T. Francis (MN’s first Black diplomat), and take part in many efforts aimed at achieving women’s suffrage. Want to learn more? Mr. Florentine Ariosto Jones Born in New Hampshire 1841. He fought in the Civil War as an enlisted man in 13th Massachusetts Infantry Regiment. He gave his occupation as “watchmaker”, and there is a photograph in the Library of Congress that may be of the young Jones holding a pocket watch. There is a resemblance to a photograph we know to be of him as an older man. . •Soon after the war was over, he worked for E. Howard & Co., one of the best watch companies in the USA, rising to the position of Superintendent. However, in 1867 he went to Europe looking for a place to begin his own company. His goal was to combine “all the excellence of the American system of mechanism with the more skillful hand labor of the Swiss” to produce watches for the American market. . •Jones crossed the atlantic to build his own manufacture in Switzerland. He met Moser in Le Locle and the seed for the first watch company in the northeast of Switzerland was planted. In 1869, Jones rented a building that belonged to Moser in the Rheinstrasse, and in 1874 he was already expanding to a new plant. Today, we celebrate what would have been Dr. Pete Dawsons 90th birthday. It has nearly been a full year since we lost this incredible man. As we all look back to what Pete meant to us, what he did for us, were also reminded of what he would be telling us during these difficult times, what would be his words of encouragement? We are so blessed to be continuing on the mission of our beloved founder. As Pete would remind us, Onward and Upward. A message from Petes daughter, Anne Dawson. Today my sweet dad would have been 90 years old. From all the thoughtful messages I’ve been getting – I know he is in the hearts and minds of so many around the world that miss him as much as we do. There is no doubt in my mind that he is having a huge celebration in Heaven with my beautiful mom and so many wonderful friends that are up there with him. Were sending our warmest congratulations to Dr. Mark Hosler, associate professor of music, who retired this spring after 44 years of teaching. Mark has been an amazing advocate and teacher of the arts at Clemson for over 20 years and his leadership and insights will be greatly missed. I’ve had a wonderful teaching career, and I’ve loved every minute of it. As I reflect on it, I’ve been so fortunate to encounter so many outstanding students and colleagues along the way. The performing arts faculty and staff, the thousands of students I’ve taught over the years and the hundreds of high school teachers and support staff members I’ve served with have all provided me with so many fond memories.
