On this day in 2000 Ariel Sharon delivered a massive insult to the Palestinian people and also Muslims everywhere by barging through the al-Aqsa mosque compound in Jerusalem (with his and all officials shoes on to boot). Riots ensued and were met with tear gas and rubber bullets that caused permanent disability to hundreds of Palestinians. The uprising that ensued was known as the al-Aqsa intifada and over the course of 2 years it claimed over 1,000 Palestinian lives and resulted in over 13,000 of our youth being held captive, effectively destroying a generation of the resistance.
