Hiked Annies Canyon trail in Solana Beach last weekend with some friends. We werent sure whether wed be able to do the ladder at the top with two kids walking and one in a hiking backpack. It was pretty busy, so once we were heading towards the top it would have been hard to backtrack, as the canyon is too tight in places for two people to pass. Turned out it was fine. Though when we got to the top my son said I was squeezing his hand so hard it hurt. I was gripped -- literally! revisiting old classic climbs is like hanging out with old friends; good memories and appreciation for the special times in the past and seeing them in a new light. While i seem to be getting fatter this line is way thinner than when @just_one_step_guiding (pictured) got the VIP tour of Crested Butte adventures. Currently it’s my MOG thigh width for 4 swings and calf width for another 3m....and just nothing for the other 30m except tool torques, fist jams, clawing at crystals, laybacks, foot jams and lots of “K.I.T....Keep...It...Together” while the sparks fly in the night. 7peaks! 💪24.48 miles with 8,334 of gain👀 Yesterday I ran/hiked across 7 major peaks in the Eastern San Gabriels. This hike had less mileage than the two 30 mile/9 peaks hikes from last month but had significant more elevation gain. This was one of the hardest days on the trail yet and its all training for the big one in October - The #FoolsTraverse I need to be kinder to myself. I can be really hard on myself and forget to celebrate achievements because I expected a better outcome. Fuck that noise! Im thankful to be fit enough to do this and super proud of this awesome shit I do! Modern man with all it’s technological advancements & benefits has forgotten a many deeper of truths almost as if he has been dulled into a neurotic nihilistic state of trance, restlessness, A Go-Go-Go mentality-is that what life has been reduced to vain acting & producing? Contemplation, silence, introspection, the state of calm & pause, allowing one to return to oneself & find oneself again is foreign to modern man. For many it seems that all he knows is “distraction” (The literal meaning of dispersion(dispersion of energy/focus) Through escapism he constantly looks outward for new tensions, sensations & stimuli-almost as psychic narcotics anything as long as he can escape oneself from oneself. Constantly chasing the latest noise, entertainment, News, gossip, the frenzy of sports or political rallies in a regime of masses-all the bread & circuses & so on. Every expedient that seems to have been brought into play above is destroying any kind of genuine inner life with oneself & the creator(whatever that may be to you) preventing any internal defense of one’s personality-almost like an artificially galvanized being, the individual waits to be programmed/swept away by the collective current-until moments like these storms put a cog in the wheel of the machine to a halt. En 1998, a los 19 años, partiendo en la montaña, el Apu hace 21 años, recordando la primera vez que subí un 5000... y cuando recién se abría un largo camino que me acompañaría y evolucionaría hasta ahora... en La foto volviendo del Leonera, me sentía tan mal que pensé nunca en mi vida podría volver subir montañas... ( jajaja... obvio fui por el día sin aclimatar! ) no tenía idea de aclimatación, ni de altitud.. todo se aprende... luego 2 años después armamos una expe en el D.A.V. a Cordillera Blanca y en los veranos guiando en el Aconcagua.... de ahí no paro nunca más... todo se ama cuando se conoce....Sin duda ha sido lo más estable de mi vida y la máxima fuente de sabiduría ...ha sido la montaña. A couple days ago we got a good weather window in Torres del Paine. Last time rain forced us down after a few pitches followed by the 20km back empty handed. This time with weather on our side we climbed the North tower via Taller del Sol with an adventurous night time descent via Moncino. Finding the rappels proved mildly epic in the dark putting us back at the bivy no earlier than 8AM after an all-nighter. On top of the towers you really feel how wild and remote these mountains are. The human brain is a funny thing. For example, we seem to forget about pain, discomfort, and fear fairly quickly. A couple weeks ago, @scottjurek and I set off at midnight for the Longs Peak duathlon. This entails riding from Boulder to the trailhead (30miles +5500ft of climbing) and then hiking 7 miles to the summit (5k feet of climbing). And then back home. I’d hiked Longs twice before, but totally forgot how LONG it takes to scramble to the top of that crazy-ass-super-exposed-endless boulder field-cliffs everywhere-OH MY GOD I’M FALLING-mountain! #NationalPublicLandsDay #HikingHighlights #Dunefield On a hike though the dunes youll find yourself enticed to go just a bit further, just a little higher, to get that view youve been waiting for. There are no established trails on the dunes, rather wind scoured ridges to follow, taking you up each un-named and ever-changing peak. The most popular destination on the sand is High Dune. This dune is the tallest dune visible from the Dunes Parking Lot. A mile and a half (as the crow flies) to the summit with a 700-foot elevation gain, you can experience a view of the entire dunefield. These 30 square miles of sand display dramatic shadows and colors at sunrise and sunset. Avoiding the middle of the day will reward you with cooler temperatures and more stunning viewscapes. Be sure to hike in close-toed shoes, bring plenty of water, and be prepared for the heat. Other popular activities on the dunes include sand boarding and sand sledding. We do not rent these inside the park. Checkout our website for more information on where to find these fun items. Lastly, a select few people find themselves drawn to try and hike the tallest dune in the park. Previously, this was Star Dune, a 755-foot, day long commitment. Our park geologist has recently crowned a new king, Hidden Dune, a 745-foot, day long commitment. Star dune has shrunk to 734 feet. ⛰️ AL RESCATE DE LA CAMPANA Es una de las montañas más emblemáticas de la cordillera de la Costa, pero la experiencia de alcanzar su cumbre tiene un aspecto muy negativo: las rocas de la cima están todas rayadas. Sin embargo, un inédito proyecto de limpieza y restauración está en marcha para solucionarlo. Impulsado por la Fundación Andestrek @fundacionande con el apoyo de la Escuela de Ingeniería en Medio Ambiente de la Universidad de Valparaíso, Conaf y Sernatur, el proyecto Por una cumbre sin graffiti: Rescate en La Campana @limpiezalacampana busca remover los rayados de la cumbre que se han ido acumulando durante décadas. Tras aprobarse una experiencia piloto que se realizó en 2017, la iniciativa fue finalmente autorizada por Conaf el 21 de julio de este año, y ahora espera reunir el financiamiento necesario para comenzar, si todo avanza según lo planeado, a partir de marzo próximo. En un área de unos 4.500 metros cuadrados hay más de 300 rayados en las rocas. Algunos son antiguos —hay nombres tallados en las piedras con fecha 1884— y otros recientes, pintados con látex, óleo y hasta corrector líquido y esmalte de uñas. “Cuando yo subí por primera vez en los 70, ya estaba rayado, dice Marcos Liberona, fundador de la Fundación Andestrek y gestor de la campaña. Es muy decepcionante. Se ha rayado por casi nueve décadas, y hay tallados aún más antiguos, según las fechas escritas. Ocurre que a través de toda la ascensión vas observando un paisaje hermoso, lleno de bosques, pero cuando vas llegando a la cumbre y comienzas a ver los Andes al fondo, aparecen esta piedras con nombres que parecen lápidas de cementerio. He visto a turistas extranjeros que quedan sumamente impactados. La alteración visual es como una bofetada”.
