Wir dürfen euch den nächsten, entzückenden Passagier der Arche vorstellen: Das Waldschaf wurde 2009 als alte Rasse in die Arche aufgenommen - seither wächst und gedeiht es wieder. Meist in kleinen Beständen gehalten, diente der Nachfahre des Torfschafes einst vor allem der Selbstversorgung mit Wolle, Fellen und Fleisch. Mit der rasanten Entwicklung der Textilindustrie zahlte sich die Haltung von Waldschafen jedoch nicht mehr aus. Die Folge: Der Bestand ging drastisch zurück – Mitte der 1980er Jahre konnten nur noch wenige Restbestände verzeichnet werden. Dies hatte massive Auswirkungen auf die genetische Vielfalt der Waldschafpopulation, sodass der Rasse das Aussterben drohte. Mittlerweile ist das Waldschaf allerdings wieder in ganz Österreich verbreitet. Die Hauptzuchtgebiete liegen im ursprünglichen Verbreitungsgebiet, dem Mühl- und Waldviertel. Sogar ein eigenes Gen-Erhaltungsprojekt wurde ins Leben gerufen. Diese Entwicklungen sind nicht zuletzt Hans Kjäer zu verdanken, der sich dem Erhalt der alten, vom Aussterben bedrohten Rasse verschrieben hat: „Ein wichtiger Meilenstein war dabei der Aufbau eines internationalen Abstammungsbuches in Österreich, in dem die österreichischen Herdentiere mittlerweile zur Gänze registriert sind.“ Was den Charakter des Waldschafes auszeichnet? Es ist äußerst robust, genügsam und wetterhart. Breed of the Week Oxford Down The Oxford Down has been successfully used throughout Northern Europe and is a generally hardy breed capable of surviving in most conditions. The breed is easily bucket trained and won’t jump fences. The development of the Oxford Down began in the 1830s from crossbreeding Southdown and Hampshire Down ewes with Cotswold rams. Many of the early flocks were based around Witney hence the name Oxford Down and in 1889 the Oxford Down Sheep Breeders’ Association and the first flock book published. The breed became immensely popular and was widely exported throughout Europe and North America. In the latter half of the 20th century the breed’s popularity declined as farmers focused on producing smaller joints. The Oxford Down is a breed capable of producing fast growing, well conformed lambs from most ewe breeds. Animal rights activists have successful caused the cancellation of an Easter sheep racing “Grand National” after receiving almost 50,000 signatures on an online petition. . The race, which has been an annual event for over 30 years, had a flock of sheep with dummy jockeys tied to their backs run a course, jumping over obstacles, to reach treats at the end. . Farm owner Will Dorrell, 27, claimed there had been threats of violence without providing any evidence: “It’s a real shame but I’ve got to think about our safety. . “We’ve been branded ‘scum’, ‘vile’, ‘evil’ and ‘butchers’ and had threats of physical violence. . “Some have suggested coming down with bolt cutters and setting the sheep free and some have threatened violence towards the animals, which is ironic considering they promote animal welfare.” . There are not any whips or abuse used upon the sheep during the race, only treats and the end of the course, but a spokesman for The Vegan Society stated that the sheep at Hoo Farm Animal Kingdom, near Telford, Shropshire in the UK, were being exploited.
