As nurses, our first principle in patient care is to Do No Harm. Every hour of every day we endure verbal and physical abuse from patients. We administer medications and restraints when needed for the safety of the patient and ourselves. These restraints require a doctor’s order and specific safety checks (every 15 minutes for the first hour) to ensure we are fulfilling our duty to Do No Harm. (SWIPE for details of what is monitored). Clearly, there is a specific system put in place to ensure nurses are held accountable for protecting the wellbeing of patients. Police MUST be held accountable as well. And we shouldn’t ever need video evidence of this, but sadly, that is what is now required to prove a wrongful death. This is nothing new. This has been happening for a very, very long time. The system is flawed. The system needs some serious revamping. The DOJ needs some pointers from the DOH. My heart is aching for so many reasons. “Every Labor Day, we celebrate the incredible contributions of the labor movement and working people to our nation’s progress. This year, with 13.6 million workers currently unemployed and around one million new people applying for unemployment benefits each week, many working families have little to celebrate. While many Black workers have been deemed essential, our country continues to treat them like they’re disposable—even as a national racial justice movement has declared that Black lives matter. Millions of “essential” workers also get little or no paid sick leave or health coverage and consequently must choose between their health and their livelihoods. Indeed, the COVID-19 pandemic has laid bare the ways our current economy fails to meet the everyday needs of working people. Black workers have been hardest hit by both the pandemic and its economic fallout. They are disproportionately more likely to lose their jobs as a result of the pandemic. And Black workers who are still working are more likely to be employed in low-wage essential service jobs, and are therefore more likely to face greater exposure to the virus than other groups. Though they make up about one in nine workers overall, Black workers comprise about one in six of all front-line industry workers, according to a recent report by the Economic Policy Institute. They are disproportionately represented in employment at grocery stores, public transit, warehouses, and child care. When we announced our vision for a new Central Square a few weeks ago, we released eight artist impressions. The images give you a sense of the broad range of activities that could take place in the new Square – from Lunar New Year celebrations to Vivid Sydney light displays, outdoor film screenings and bustling groups travelling to work or study. Today, in a typical and almost laughable Daily Telegraph hit-piece, I’m accused of being “divisive” and “one-eyed” because one of the images suggests the Square might be used for... a climate rally. Scroll across to see the terrifying image. While some on our Council may be “gobsmacked” that the City would consider its public spaces being used to demand climate action, I’m proud that this is part of our vision. The City is committed to addressing climate change, and Council has publicly endorsed the efforts of the @schoolstrikeforclimate movement. Central Square could be a home for markets, parties and concerts, a great place to walk through or sit and enjoy a coffee – or a space to rally as a community. Let’s hope by the time it’s completed there will be no need for climate protests. It’s been nine long years. . Peterson was walking home alone from a local convenience store one fatal night in 2011 when he was attacked and knocked unconscious. Once he came to, he found he was being sexually assaulted. Peterson immediately took to defending himself by shooting Chavez with a gun he carried for his protection. Chavez later died. Although a rape kit, as well as evidence from a Georgia Bureau of Investigation, both corroborated Ky’s sexual assault, because he was Black and trans, the state believed he attempted to rob the assailant. Peterson was later charged for involuntary manslaughter and sentenced to 20 years in prison. Peterson is finally coming home, and we like to help him cover travel expenses as well as help him and his family get back on his feet. . THE GOAL: Raise $10K in support of Ky. We want to offset the difficulties for him to find and secure work and housing. I am going to post this and not read the comments or personal messages I receive because of it. I regretfully took it down, and I am here putting it back up thanks to @keeepelevating People pick the words this woman wrote apart all you want. I for one feel the medical system is completely flawed and ass backwards, a place where big pharma makes a buck off your dis-ease when I know damn well from personal experience that all dis-eases can be cured with raw foods, hydration, movement and breath, but I let needing to express that in that moment go because her message speaks volumes of truth when it comes to police brutality. Yes. Some nurses are shit and drug people as restraint. I would like to hope thats not what she does. If his windpipe was infact not crushed and you want to argue that and deter from the message this woman was doing her best from her heart to show solidarity then go ahead, I dont have the time for petty arguments. Bottom line is, death doesnt need to be a result. We literally all watched him die and we all know it didnt have to go down that way. Period. This brings me to breath. I have been contemplating for days on how to address this. I have let so many hateful personal messages from family, friends, aquaintences and strangers really get under my skin the past few days and thats my bad. But I saw a post from @audrabear sharing what I have been so fearful of sharing because of the backlash I have recieved. But here it is. Be so mindful of the mantras we are creating surrounding our breath. Do not give away your power. Celebrate that we all have breath and are working in unison to create change that is long overdue. In heterosexual, dual-earning families with kids under 13, mothers have reduced their work hours four to five times more than fathers. There are a few reasons why that might be happening. Kids go to mommy first; women are doing more emotional labor than ever. I have seen a lot of folks suggesting this is what families sign up for when they have children. Or, suggesting that its just about money. Many families need two incomes to stay afloat, for one. And it should go without saying that preventing women from contributing to society outside the home for a year if not more is an incalculable loss. But apparently I have to say it. Anti-racism and anti-oppression are key in the Harm Reduction and HIV/HCV movement - Racism and Classism have always been twin forces in the War on Drugs and the War on Drug Users. One of our critical realizations as an organization is that holding an intention of being accessible is not enough. For context, I pay multiple six-figures in taxes annually. Does that mean I have a terrible CPA and don’t know what I’m doing? No. It means I make a lot of money, take all of the the appropriate deductions available to me, and then pay the amount of taxes that are expected for someone in my income bracket. It means, I’m not starting hundreds of businesses that generate no revenue and lose money consistently for the sole purpose of offsetting all of my healthy profits and earned income. Should you take tax deductions and do what you can to lower your tax liability? Sure. But if we want to live in a society that isn’t destroyed by capitalism than we need to normalize wealthy people paying taxes. And yes, wealthy people should be paying more than low-income and middle class people. It’s amazing the comments I receive when I share that I have a six-figure tax bill. As if I’m a chump, a loser and not in the know on how to avoid paying taxes. I have a CPA, a financial planner, a bookkeeper and a CFO. I’m also a lawyer who has actually read significant sections of the tax code. I do not lack in relevant tax knowledge or strategy. I’m just not a fucking scum bag like the asshole in the White House. If we want to create a different world, one where our most vulnerable citizens don’t carry enormous financial burdens so that billionaires and millionaires can avoid paying taxes so they can buy yet another Ferrari, lets reconsider our stance on some of these issues. (MY 14-YEAR OLD SISTERS LED THIS MARCH) However, this rally and march was disturbed by a UVA student, Morgan Bettinger. Morgan drove around the public works truck blocking the street that demonstrators were convened on, & felt compelled to say, not just once, but twice, that protesters would “make good speed bumps.” The second time she repeated it loudly to a Black protester and added “good fucking speed bumps.” This is deeply chilling as we know there have been dozens of. car attacks on protesters across the U.S. in the last few months. Morgan’s actions are not to be trivialized. Her words were clear, her words come from a language of violence, and we should take her at face value. To the UVA administration: it would be unconscionable to know that a student at your University, in a town with its own car attack on protesters in near history, would feel emboldened enough to say not once, but twice, that protesters would make good speed bumps, & not take immediate action against that student. There is nothing honorable about endorsing white supremacist terror tactics. UVA must take swift action to expel Morgan Bettinger. UVA has a duty to protect its Black students from people espousing white supremacist ideologies on its campus. “New Jersey will soon require its public school students to learn another subject: climate change, from recycling and clean energy to conserving water and protecting the state’s beaches. The state will become the first in the country to infuse climate change into the curriculum at every grade level, officials said. The mandate takes effect with the 2021-22 school year.
