When I told my wife bye this morning and I love her, she said “I am grateful we are still here”. I just thought on that for a while. First it was the numbers I can’t forget. Oct 1, 2017 - 10:05 pm - Route 91 - deadliest mass shooting in modern US history 58 dead (*60 now), 867 physically injured, thousands more emotionally changed. One man, 24 guns, explosives, 6000 rounds, with over 1100 rounds fired in approx 10 mins. At one point according to a report, 280 rounds fired in 31 seconds. Again that’s from one man... 9 shots per second. My memory of that time used to be much more about what was actually happening, like a replay rather than an analysis. Things like way the crowd looked like a rock skipping over water with ripples headed away from every person that was hit. Things like the panic and fear you could see in friends and strangers alike. Things like how with every new burst of rounds, decisions had to be made on how and where to move to safety. Things like strangers clutched on to you, begging you not to leave them behind. Things like the violence of what it looks like to see gun shot wounds happen in real time. So many more vivid moments. I can play back that 10 or so minutes like a video recording in my mind. Now though, thinking about it, I think more about its effect on people. Real people I saw experience the same events as myself, including my wife. Those minutes and the 3 years since have taught me a lot about people and a lot about myself. I think about how thousands of people all experiencing and reacting to the same events can see/feel in such a wide variety of ways. I think about how normal that is, and about how different each of us must be to have such different reactions. I mean that in terms of internal makeup, internal chemistry, life experiences, stress exposure, and so much more. It’s one of the biggest ways I have changed since Oct 1. It instantly made me a more understanding and empathetic person. Now it’s a reminder to not judge or expect certain reactions from people. In light of all that is happening now, it can not negate the triumphs that Christ has allowed me to witness in my 30 years of living on this earth. In retrospect, I’ve grown to love myself, in spite of insecurities, learn(ed/ing) who I am, absent of familial voices, and discover(ed/ing) what I am destined to accomplish in this lifetime. Now, I’ve screwed up many times, hurt those I love the most, defamed my own character and came to moments in life where I didn’t recognize who’s reflection was staring back at me, but thank God for forgiveness, growth, repentance, acceptance, love, family and friendship that brought me out of a dark place; multiple times. During this quarantine, I’ve lost some people that I truly loved, I’ve had some really tough conversations, I’ve endured some long hours sitting in front of a computer screen with eyes straining to stay open, and I’ve battled feelings of depression; but, out of it all I’M STILL STANDING. As I journey into 30 & Beyond, I take with me the lessons learned from the past, the wisdom of my elders, my experiences, and my missed/blocked opportunities; I live without fear and reservations, and I seek to fulfill everything that God has predestined for me to have. As a Black man, I do not take it lightly that I am breathing in a world that stands on our necks or shoots us and still tells us to freeze. I do not call it luck that I am college educated and employed during a recession. I do not forsake the fact that I have access to shelter, food, clean water, and toiletries. There’s certain things I can’t help writing about. And @chadwickboseman is one of those. Since he passed away, I couldn’t stop looking further into his story. And I kept writing as I read. I felt by sharing some of my thoughts it might brighten up a few newsfeeds. • I’m not religious, but Chadwick seemed the closest we’ll get to a person following the guidance of a higher power. Humans like him are impossible to find these days. Most people, especially celebrities, we know every detail about. If they get a new puppy, we know the breeder. If they’re drinking coffee, we know what type of creamer they used. We know Who’s dating Who. We know Who got arrested for What. We share everything. And we have this need to know everything. Then we draw an opinion, assumption, or judgement about said person. It’s a vicious circle we’re all going in together. • I started believing that privacy was no longer valuable. And selfless acts of kindness weren’t either. Chadwick proved both wrong. This guy was walking around for 4 years with the weight of a terminal cancer diagnosis. And nobody knew. He was visiting children with cancer. Nobody knew. The worst news someone could possibly receive, he received. But continued moving forward with even bigger steps. His most impactful years were the ones when death was looming over his head. A time in life you’d figure someone needs help most, and he was out helping others. It might be the most inspiring thing I’ve ever seen. • He’s proof that you can’t take your wealth, fame, possessions, or instagram followers with you to the grave. The only thing that will survive you is the impact you had on others. • He was a living example of a Maya Angelou quote I absolutely love. “People will forget what you said. People will forget what you did. But people will never forget how you made them feel”. • 99.9999% of the things you worry about don’t actually matter. Read that again 👆🏽. We’re all dying. I met @mr_drinkard in 2011, when I was 18 years old. I was visiting my cousin at the @universityofga during spring break and he was visiting his brother. We flirted and exchanged numbers, and I didnt think anything of it until we were both on the same plane back home to Illinois. It was a strange coincidence. We sat next to each other the entire flight and exchanged social media. But, we didnt communicate for a whole year. We both had our own things going on. It wasnt until 20102 that we started subtly flirting with each other, and he finally slid into my DMs asking why wed lost touch. We started talking again, and I would visit him often at school. College was a growing experience for us. He was the hot-shot Basketball player who could have any girl he wanted, and I was the Indian girl who had to keep him a secret. @mr_drinkard chose me, chose my culture, and chose to understand why I couldnt tell my parents I was dating someone at 19-years old. I kept him a secret for the next four years. It wasnt until I moved to Atlanta in 2015 that I finally decided to tell my parents. I was so loved and accepted by @mr_drinkard family and felt he deserved the same. My family is full of interracial couples, but we would be the first Indian and Black. When I first told my parents in 2016, it was more disappointment than anger. They were shocked that I could hide such an important part of my life from them for so long. Finally, in 2016 he met my parents. Today, we spend holidays together, and my Dad gave his blessing for marriage this past Christmas. We celebrated eight years of love on September 1st! More on them below.⁣ ⁣ In 2015 I attended a mastermind seminar with @stumclaren and he was sharing how Michael Hyatt had a collective group of 9000 clients paying $30USD a month for his subscription biz.⁣ ⁣ He said the secret sauce to building a loyal subscriber base was focusing on building a flawless membership site and an A1 customer experience, instead of doing what most marketers do and focusing your attention on upsells or bonuses.⁣ ⁣ Towards the end of 2015 is when Tiffany and I were building our business, and everyone said our prices were too low. They said it would never work. It was just 3 of us, not the 20+ team you see today. The difference is I saw the opportunity. He came home so sad to have this conversation with me, I cried, I was disgusted, the conversation with the school and parents that followed were extremely uncomfortable. The following week the boy slapped him in the face, then kicked him down in the mud at lunch time, he came home after school full of mud on his pants and when I emailed the teacher she replied “oh I didn’t notice”. My heart ❤️ hurts for humanity and although I can never put myself in your shoes, I see with my eyes wide open and I stand with you, support and love you all! A snow storm is raging outside. My first ever in Toronto, having arrived in the softness of spring only a few months before. Though I didn’t make this cake, it stands for me as an important reminder of many aspects of what it means to learn, collaborate, celebrate together. It is also a cake, but bear with me. January 29 2019 while leisurely strolling through the aisles of my local TJ MAXX I received a text from @topherpatt that read. “Do you want to spend New Years in Ghana?” To which I quickly replied yes! But... how? As this was the year of return and every flight was packed to the gills, jumpseats included. I also hadn’t renewed my visa for Ghana and was therefore at a complete loss. Well.. the rest as they say is history, Christopher somehow managed to not only get me a visa but on a flight to Ghana that same night!!! (Go figure) This spontaneous albeit not very unusual course of events would set in motion a life changing journey neither of us had any idea we’d be taking. There in Ghana, as we celebrated the year of return amongst friends and loved ones from both near and far we, Christopher and I conceived 2 future Queens on the motherland continent itself😂😇😊😊☺️ So... this Mother’s Day is a first of many for us both, and I am both humbled and excited. Talk about a glow up 💁🏻‍♀️🤣 From little baby Freshman in college having our second long distance relationship reunion to real life adults at their first friend group wedding! 🥰 The road in between hasn’t been linear or by the book. It hasn’t been all sunshine and roses. But what I can tell you is this... No matter where we are, no matter where I am, this guy is my rock.
