Aso Ebi: Wine & Gold I’m spending more time with my works. Purposefully expanding on the aspects that celebrate my culture, identity and history. The legacy of black female headdress in fashion and culture. The Ife head, tribal marks, and legacy of mapping the black body. I’ve been sitting on this work for a few weeks now. I finished it and took some time to observe and ‘dig deeper’. Made at a time when I was feeling very overwhelmed and deep in anxiety. My usually steady hand veered off course while I was sculpting the lines down the center of the face. I could have ‘corrected’ it, but the gesture seemed true to my feelings at the time. Eine Kletterheimat durch alle Jahrzehnte, sei ihm das Wettersteingebirge geblieben, sagt der bald 90-jährige Münchner Kletterpionier Hermann Huber. Ich kann das nachvollziehen – vom winterlichen Abenteuer am Blassengrat mit zarten 14 Jahren bis hin zur Erstbegehung von Vogelfrei in der Schüsselkarspitze-Südwand durfte ich in meinen Hausbergen große Erlebnisse sammeln. Umso glücklicher war ich, als mich @jakobschweighofer von @whiteroomproductions einlud, an einem Filmprojekt über das Wetterstein teilzunehmen. Das Ergebnis unserer Zusammenarbeit ist am Montag, 7.9., um 20.15 (Österreich) und 21.15 (Deutschland) auf @servustv zu sehen. Hauptakteur in Wettersteingebirge – Grenzgang ins Ungewisse ist @michiwohlleben, dessen Überschreitung des gesamten Wettersteingrates auch Teil der Filmtour 2020 bei @bofffilm ist. Besonders freut mich, dass Hermann Huber aus der Frühzeit des Kletterns im #Oberreintal erzählt. Und vor den Leistungen des Leutascher Solo-Kletterers @albert.9er ziehe ich einfach nur den Hut. Camilo Cienfuegos I’ve never been a fan of that famous picture of Che Guevara that has garnered so much adoration among Americans who lack context & so much hate among Cuban Americans I have empathy for those who simply see a revolutionary figure who wanted to “fight the power” just as I have empathy for those who know he killed thousands of innocents as head of the firing squads, & had fun doing it But it’s always annoyed me how famous that photo has become. If there should be an iconic image of any Cuban revolutionary, it should be this photo of Camilo Cienfuegos Camilo was faithful to the cause of a free Cuba but did not subscribe to the communist ideologies of Raul & Che. Originally from a working class background, the boyish & bohemian Camilo was a man of the people El cubano feliciano did not believe in exacting revenge on prisoners after the war in the name of “revolutionary justice” - understanding that to do so would be to diminish the character of the movement Camilo quickly began rivaling Fidel in popularity & during one of his speeches, the people chanted, “¡Deja que habla Camilo!” They had no idea they might be sealing his fate On October 28th, 1959 - Camilo’s plane disappeared mysteriously on a night flight from Camagüey to Havana. He was presumed dead & his body was never found Officially, Camilo died a martyr for the Revolution. Unofficially, many believed Castro had his plane shot down. Some say he fled to Ybor City - we’ll never knew Growing up in exile, there is no gray area when it comes to the Revolution - we’re told it was entirely unnecessary or that everyone involved was evil. Figures like Cienfuegos, José Hecheverría, & Frank País are never mentioned My abuela actually lived near Camilo in the Havana neighborhood of Lawton. We are deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Molly Neptune Parker. Molly was a Passamaquoddy basketmaker from Indian Township in Princeton, ME. She made baskets in the traditional form for more than 75 years. In 2012, Molly was named a National Heritage Fellowship recipient, one of our nations highest honors in artistic achievement. In 2018, the Maine Arts Commission featured Mollys work in our inaugural Maine Arts Awards celebration. She was the matriarch of four generations of living basketmakers, and we were honored to visit her home to film this segment about her lifes work. Storytime. Twenty three years ago, I had only 7 years experience in pottery at the time. I had just purchased a house with my now ex wife and our nearby Red River of the North started to flood. The sudden melt of 120 some inches of accumulated winter snow fed the river from huge prairie lands of Minnesota and North Dakota. The newscasters made increasingly alarming flood predictions. The towns started organizing sand bag filling and positioning of bags as citizens volunteered. Lots of neighbors came out, it was an emergency and we did the work that we could do and prepared knowing the citys plan and the predictions coming from officials. We couldnt just listen to the news and not be working towards a solution. Fargo and Moorhead made it through in good shape from that flood. They said it was a 500 year flood but its been every few years since. When the waters receded I found a pile of fine clay by a path along the river, close to home. I took about 25 pounds of clay home in my back pack. I mixed it with some ash from my woodstove and made these bottles. I had to put the glaze on a freshly thrown piece to get it to stick. Cannabis, hemp, or marijuana? What is the difference?⠀ ⠀ Prepare yourself – this is a pretty complex topic!⠀ ⠀ Cannabis sativa literally means “cultivated cannabis.” It was coined in 1753 by botanist Carl Linnaeus and referred to a tall variety in Europe and Eurasia with long, narrow, light green leaves.⠀ ⠀ Sounds like hemp, right? It should, because it also had a very low THC percentage.⠀ ⠀ In 1785, naturalist Jean Baptiste Lamarck discovered another variety in India with a high THC percentage. He cleverly coined this “Cannabis Indica.” Yet another variety was found in Afghanistan in 1974 with a high THC percentage and broad, dark green leaves.⠀ ⠀ Sounds like our indica strains, right? ⠀ ⠀ Strain names, or cultivars, like indica and sativa, are actually misnomers. While they represent marijuana, or high THC varieties, both marijuana and hemp are both legally classified as cannabis sativa. ⠀ ⠀ “Cannabis” is also a species name, so technically hemp and marijuana are both cannabis. They’re just different varieties.⠀ ⠀ Congrats if you’ve made it this far! He is a Pre-Colombian pot (missing his ears) from the Chorrera culture, which is from the coastal region of Equador, who produced highly sophisticated and artistic pottery, often inspired by nature, animals, birds, fruits and marine life.
