The Bridge Street Complete Streets Project in #SalemMA will get underway next week. Project Summary: Scope of work includes reconstruction of Bridge Street between Flint Street and Boston Street and a section of Goodhue Street. The proposed roadway work will realign Bridge Street and construct separated bicycle facilities on both sides of the roadway. There will be geometric changes made at the both the Boston Street and Flint Street intersections. Boston Street will receive new pedestrian signals and Flint Street intersection will receive all new traffic and pedestrian signals. The project will also include roadway pavement milling and resurfacing, ADA compliant sidewalks, crosswalks and ramps, drainage modifications, new LED lighting, new signage and pavement markings, new tree plantings, and construction of bio-swales and other landscape areas. Project Work Hours: 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. for day work Project Work Limits: Flint Street to Boston Street Two Week Look-Ahead: Week of September 28th: -Contractor J. Tropeano will start to mobilize to the job site. -Temporary traffic management barriers will be installed. -Erosion controls and a staging area will be set up. -Test-pits and excavations to begin. Week of October 5th: -Contractor to install drainage structures and pipe. -Contractor to install new hydrants. Traffic management: Two-way traffic will be maintained through the work zone. Installing a window- well that was not as stressful as I had anticipated.🥳 . We knew a crucial component for resale value would be having a window in the van. Luckily, the two back doors already had windows installed from the factory (not all Promasters come this way). We opted to get a window for the passenger side from Van Windows Direct because well, they had a big sale🤷🏼‍♀️. . Inside the Promaster there are preexisting lines that outline the window. We took a 1/8” drill bit and drilled guide holes from the inside out. We then taped the outline of the window with clear packing tape (protects the paint and keep the metal sheet from falling out). Using a grinder we made a small slot for the jig saw to fit into. We then used the jig saw to slowly and carefully cut the outline of the window, reapplying tape as we went. . Once the window was cut out we were left with a big ole hole. We added a .375 edge trim (this thickness is Promaster specific and the window company advised this, we did not figure that measurement out) and cut it to size (we ended up taking it off to add a little layer or primer for rust). We bought the glue kit from the company after figuring out urethane primer goes for about $70/can. We added urethane primer, let it dry for 10 minutes and then laid down a continues line of Sikaflex P2G glue with little dollops on the sides. . Then we pressed and played. We had to do this part quickly because the glue is not forgiving. We added as much pressure as we could and then taped it down with blue tape to hold it in place overnight! . Overall it was pretty straightforward and I was surprised by how simple it was when we went step by step and didn’t get overwhelmed. Anyone else installing a window? Berkeley Food Network’s Sarah Palmer takes delivery of a bushel of friseé from the Edible Schoolyard Project’s Geoff Palla. Working in partnership with local organizations like the Edible Schoolyard and winning $600,000 grant from Bayer allow the Berkeley Food Network the ability to meet increased demand resulting from the pandemic. Before the pandemic BFN was distributing food to an estimated 6,000 families per month. Welcome to the final day of Zero Waste Week. or is it? I think of this week as a bootcamp, and now its over to you to keep up the great work for the next 51 weeks! Today’s challenge is all about valuing our food and caring and sharing. Sometimes, no matter how good our intentions and how clear our systems are, we are going to find we have things that we are not going to eat. This is the same all the way down the food supply chain. This week, you’ve cleared out and cleaned out your fridge and created an Eat Me First shelf, so you will direct people to the right foods in order to avoid waste. This way, you’ll never again be missing that ingredient you bought specially for when you come to make a particular dish. You’ve been shopping in your freezer to make sure that never again will you not have the room to be able to freeze anything you wouldn’t get around to using by the Use By date. Now you’ll be able to bag a bargain when you see one and you can do that all important thing of keeping your bread in the freezer. You’ve shared a tip for better food storage, you’ve made a use it up dinner with #LetsIgnoreBestBefore and you’ve prepared some store cupboard recipes to cut down your meal planning efforts, reduce the amount of perishable food you buy and make sure you have enough flexibility in your meal plans so you’re not wasting food if your social or work plans change. Wow! what a week. What we’d like you to do today is to look back at your achievements and tell us about them. Have you saved some food from becoming waste? While the rate of new coronavirus cases has been creeping up statewide and dozens of schools have closed temporarily due to infections, some Connecticut districts plan to begin to transition from hybrid models of online and classroom learning to in-person classes for all students five days a week. Superintendents say the decision to proceed relies heavily on public health metrics and their abilities to mitigate risk, but they advise parents not to view the shift as a permanent escape from the hybrid model. With the looming prospect of shutdowns later in the fall and winter, state officials have repeatedly emphasized the importance of all students receiving some in-person education, while they still can. “The question is if it is spreading in schools and if our mitigation efforts are working,” West Hartford Superintendent of Schools Tom Moore said. “If the situation changes, we will adjust, and we monitor it daily.” With more students learning in the same school building, districts are working to heighten health and safety protocols and adjusting for the possibility of increased contacts among students and staff. Every year, World Car-Free Day is celebrated on 22 September to encourage motorists and commuters to imagine their localities with car-free for a day.
