The last major #USNavy ship sunk in #WWII, the cruiser USS Indianapolis (CA 35) delivered the final blow that ended the war. 75 years later, they’ve left a legacy of resilience and sacrifice. Honoring the service, sacrifice and resilience of the crew, @usnavycno has asked the Fleet for a moment of silence and members of Congress will present the survivors with the Congressional Gold Medal during a virtual ceremony today at 1100 EDT. The story of the WWII service and ultimate loss of Indianapolis is an important chapter in the story of the U.S. Navy. Days after delivering components of the atomic bomb later dropped on Hiroshima to a base in the Pacific, the cruiser was attacked by a Japanese sub just after midnight on July 30, 1945. Sinking within minutes, more than 880 of the ship’s 1,196 Sailors and Marines went into the water. After four to five days of exposure, drowning, and shark attacks, only 316 survived. Eight survivors remain alive today. While the ship’s final act has made her the subject of enduring public interest, it was her remarkable success in battle that made her and her crew legends. Japanese pride: The Battleship Musashi Codenamed Battleship Number 2, the battleship Musashi was one of the two Yamato class BB, often overlooked by her sister. Designed in 1937, the ship was massive, with guns calibers forbidden by the Washington treaty, and with the capability of fighting against several ships at the time. The general concept of it was that this ship would be so powerful, that Japan would equilibrate the naval battle by this type of ships, against the industrial capacity of the United States (yet, we would later discover why this concept was wrong and why after Midway the Yamato Class became kind of useless). The ship was constructed on top secrecy, avoiding the detection of it by the foreign powers. Under the same secrecy it was built, the ship was successfully launched on Nov 1st, 1940. Some modifications were made to the ship, and, after the little delay, it was commissioned on may of 1942 for trials. During its time in Kure on July 1943 (where it was sent and designed as Yamamotos flagship), it was modified and 4 Type 22 fire control radars were installed. Between 5 Aug 1943 and 10 Feb 1944, Musashi remained mostly in port at Truk; the only sortie she embarked upon was the Oct 1943 movement to Brown Island, Eniwetok Atoll, Marshall Islands in response to a possible American invasion of Wake Island and raids against the Gilbert Islands. After losing lot of equipment she was carrying to Palau to a typhoon, the ship was hit by 1 torpedo fired by an US submarine. After reaching Kure, it was repaired and were added several guns. On 18 Oct, Vice Admiral Takeo Kurita engaged in Operation Sho-Go by taking a powerful surface fleet that included both of the Yamato-class battleships. The fleet sailed into the Sibuyan Sea west of Leyte of the Philippine Islands, aiming to hit the vulnerable American transports on the other side of the island. On 24 Oct 1944, an aircraft from carrier USS Intrepid spotted the fleet. By 1018, Musashis lookouts reported about 30 incoming hostile aircraft. ON THIS DAY… in 1916, Yelcho arrived into Punta Arenas in Chile. Onboard the vessel was the crew who had left England with Ernest Shackleton two years earlier, 22 of whom had been stranded on Elephant Island for 137 days, with little to keep them going other than the belief that their leader would one day return to rescue them. On 30 August 1916, that day came. - The Yelcho rescue was all the more impressive given that the vessel was deemed unfit for purpose prior to departure; her steel-built steamer was not strengthened against the thick ice and she had no proper heating system. The Japanese Maritime Self Defence Force #JMSDF is being represented at the exercise by guided missile destroyer, JS Ikazuchi and Helicopter Carrier, JS Kaga. Rear Admiral Konno Yasushige, Commander Escort Flotilla Two (CCF2) is heading the JMSDF complement while #IndianNavy (IN) complement is being headed by Rear Admiral Krishna Swaminathan, Flag Officer Commanding Western Fleet. The IN complement comprises guided missile destroyer INS Chennai, guided missile frigate INS Tarkash and replenishment tanker INS Deepak. JIMEX-2020 includes anti-submarine and advanced air defence #exercises as well as other tactical manoeuvres that cover a wide spectrum of maritime operations. August 30, 1943. A special day at Portsmouth Navy Yard as two brand new fleet boats are prepared for launching on the same morning. Balao-class boats USS BANG(SS-385) and USS PILOTFISH(SS-386). USS BANG would be credited by JANAC with 8 ships sunk for 20,181 tons. She would be transferred to Spain in 1972, and scrapped in 1983 after a long career. USS PILOTFISH wouldnt be credited with any sinkings in her five war patrols, however, she did perform life guard duty on many occasions, performing well in this capacity. She would hold the distinction of participating in the official surrender ceremony in Tokyo Bay. This was probably the height of PILOTFISHs career. She just never seemed able to pick up the scent trail of a target worth a torpedo. Herself would be deemed a target worth an atomic bomb in 1946, serving as a target for Operation Crossroads at Bikini Atoll. The two surviving Littorio-class battleships Italia (formerly lead ship Littorio, shown closest to the camera) and Vittorio Veneto after reaching Malta in September 1943. Their sister ship Roma, which had been flagship of the Commander in Chief, Naval Battle Forces, Admiral Carlo Bergamini, was sunk by a pair of German PC 1400 X guided glider bombs, dropped from Dornier Do 217s while the contingent was en route from La Spezia. This loss of fleet leadership made for a tricky situation within the remaining ships, proceeding cautiously into the unknown only a day after orders arrived to sail for an Allied port instead of resisting invasion. They were met by their escorting Allied ships on the 10th, and arrived in Malta the next day. Breechblocks were removed, except for anti-aircraft guns, and an Allied presence was initially established aboard; there had been thoughts of scuttling upon arrival, but these intentions were subjugated by the placing of the battleships under the senior Italian officer at Malta, Admiral Alberto de Zara. aboard the battleship Caio Duilio, which had arrived from Taranto the previous day. - The two surviving Littorios were moved to Alexandria beginning on 14 September, along with the bulk of the fleet that had come over to the Allies at Malta; most of them would return to Italian ports in short order, to rejoin the fight after Italy’s declaration of war against Germany on 13 October. The Littorios were not so lucky, and were shuttled off to the Great Bitter Lake for several years of internment. Though there was talk of sending them to the Far East against Japan as the core of an Italian Allied Task Force, the requisite equipment installations, systems compatibility conversions, and subsequent training would have kept them from the Pacific Theater until at least the end of 1946, and the plans were discarded. - @haze_grey_history on Instagram

The USS New Mexico is pictured here at right with the USS Pennsylvania at Pearl Harbor in 1943. ⠀ She was the first battleship to have a turbo-electric transmission and was launched in 1917. At the start of WWII, she headed for the Pacific Ocean. Silhouettes — Haven’t done one of these in a while. Japanese battleship Yamashiro silhouetted against the horizon after her big 1930-4 modernization, which resulted in the extensive bridgework the class is known for. Yamashiro’s reconstruction took lessons from Fusō’s, which was considered less successful; improvements to Yamashiro’s pagoda, for example, negated the need to move the third turret as was done on her sister, while her stern was lengthened by 25’ during initial work, rather than afterwards as with Fusō. Other improvements included an elevation change to 43° for the main battery and 30° for the secondary, the addition of torpedo bulges and additional armor, complete replacement of machinery, and the deletion of a stack and her hull-mounted torpedo tubes. Yamashiro would go on to become the last battleship to be defeated in battle by enemy battleships, succumbing to torpedo and gunfire damage at the Battle of Surigao Strait. - @haze_grey_history on Instagram

5/13 USS Missouri (BB-63) - On 17 april 1945 she was instrumental in an operation where an enemy submarine was sunk. As part of Okinawa campaign she had shot down 5 enemy planes, repelled daylight attacks and been involved in shore bombardment, just to name a few. Then on 9 of May she arrived in Ulithi, then onto Guam on 18 May and 27 May she was again conducting shore bombardment against Japanese positions on Okinawa. #pearlharbor75 #mightymoments - @pearlharbor75 on Instagram

FS Dunkerque ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Dunkerque was the lead ship of Dunkerque Class Battleship built for the French Navy in the 1930s. The class also included Strasbourg. The two ships were the first capital ship to be built by the French Navy after WW1; the planned Normandie and Lyon Classes had been cancelled at the outbreak of war, and budgetary problems prevented the French from building new battleships in the decade after the war. Dunkerque was laid down in December 1932, was launched October 1935, and was completed in May 1937. She was armed with a main battery of eight 330mm/50 modéle 1931 gun, arranged in two quadruple gun turrets and had a top speed of 29.5 knots (54.6 km/h; 33.9 mph) ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Dunkerque and Strasbourg formed the French Navys 1ère Division de Ligne (1st Division of the Line) prior the Second World War. The two ships searched for German commerce raiders in the early months of the war, and Dunkerque also participated in convoy escort duties. The ship was badly damaged during the British attack after the Armistice that ended the first phase of Frances participation in WW2, but she was refloated and partially repaired to return to Toulon for comprehensive repairs. Dunkerque was scyttled in November 1942 to prevent her capture by the Germans, and subsequently seized and partially scrapped by the Italians and later the Germans.
