🗽🗽🗽ADOPT A MILITARY SLANDER FAM MEMBER FOR THE HOLIDAYS!🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸 Check our FB post (link in bio) in top announcements for the sign up link. With everything going on in the world, Slander Fam is striving to bring some positivity and give back as much as we possibly can. The holidays can be a hard time for a lot of people, but imagine being away from friends and family. We have quite a few Slander Fam members that are active military, and we want to bring some brightness in the midst of all this darkness going around. So we came up with a way for us to do just that... We recently sent a package to one of our favorite Slander Fam members who is deployed. This was just from the admins, as we’ve all become friends with him over the years... but it got us thinking, that especially for the holidays coming up... there may be some Slander Fam members that may want to do the same... The idea would be to have all ACTIVE military Slander Fam sign up, provide their address as well as a list of things they like (most likely hot sauce and microwave Mac & cheese etc). Then once we have a list of those people, we would assign them to a Slander Fam member, to ADOPT one active military fam member for the holidays... so we would provide you with the info, you would to make a box full of their fave things, and send it to them directly. Just to give you an idea of how much it would cost, a relatively small box, not super heavy, would be about $20 to ship, then you would spend about $30 in goodies... so plan on spending around $40-50 before signing up. You also have the ability to split the cost with a fellow Slander Fam member, or just donate $40-50 for me to go shopping and make the box for you. We don’t have a lot of active military in the group, and have decided to open this up to ANY SLANDER FAN WHO IS ACTIVE MILITARY. So if you know a Slander fan that is currently active military, even if they’re stationed in Japan or Hawaii, please sign them up! Note we would need their full address! One Man Army: Gurkha Dipprasad Pun On the night of 17 September 2010, Sergeant Dipprasad Pun, 31, was on duty alone at night when he heard some noises and realized he was surrounded. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Pun opened fire with a machine gun, a rifle and a grenade launcher. He single handedly fought off up to 30 Taliban trying to storm his position near Babaji in Helmand Province, southern Afghanistan. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ At one point he had to use the tripod of his machine gun to beat away a militant climbing the walls of the compound. 🗣🗣🗣 Long Post Alert I wanted to share my promotion journey because I know a vast majority of people who do test for the next rank typically disagree w/ how the promotion strats are distributed. Last year I tested for MSgt, for the first time w/ a “Promote” rating. When I signed my EPR a few weeks before the testing cycle began, I was actually pretty surprised at my rating & let it get the best of me. I felt discouraged and this affected how much time I put into studying as a first time-tester. Always being told I’m young. No stratification. I checked all the boxes but it wasn’t enough. The truth is, the Air Force is still working to get things right, we will never be perfect. One thing I did learn, through this process was not to discredit the individuals my leadership felt were more competent to be a SNCO just because I know I did push myself to be a good leader. I didn’t study like I needed to because in my heart I genuinely believed I wouldn’t make it. When my leadership at Tinker gave me a certificate with MY line number on it, I didn’t believe it. What I genuinely learned is leadership, sustained superior performance & progression will get you promoted. Continue to be a leader. Don’t be so salty you didn’t get stratted that you don’t put forth the effort to study. Don’t discredit those who were stratted by your leadership. You’re on the same playing field as 85% of those you test against. ThrowBack: Haha 15 year old “Who me?!” This Is a Testament of how I learned that believing in people’s gifts and strengths can change the trajectory of someone’s life. Because it happened to me. I was/am a fatherless child and I believe Sgt.Mike not only has filled my life with so much golden gems but many of my other high schools friends lives. It’s when you look back and everything makes sense on how life was talked about. I was a teenager who didn’t believe in myself until someone believed in me. I know that feeling very well. That was such a huge lesson for me as a teenager. The power of someone owning total faith in you. And now I see this circumstance pop out in my life, again and again in my own little world now after several years. I believe in my people so much I wish they knew the extent of how I feel about them. That’s why I don’t give up. Even when times get tough I stay because it is easier to leave than stay. Officer McLeod recently came to the Cambridge Police Department after graduating from @southernscsu on a full athletic scholarship, where he played basketball and joined the @scsu_owls 1000-point club. I could see the positive impact that police in Cambridge have on the youth, and I wanted to be a part of that and give back to the community that raised me. Describe your connection to the community. I have lived in Cambridge my whole life. I lived in the Port, Coast, and North Cambridge. I went to elementary school at Morse Elementary School. Corporal Ciara M. Durkin - Remembering an American Hero Army Corporal Ciara M. Durkin, 30, of Quincy, Mass.; was Killed In Action on this day in 2007 at Bagram Airfield in Afghanistan. Ciara was assigned to the 726th Finance Battalion, Massachusetts Army National Guard, West Newton, Mass. Durkin was a 1996 graduate of Fontbonne Academy in Milton and joined the Army National Guard in October 2005. Ciara was the type of person who would go out of her way to help someone in need. In April of 2004, they credited Ciara with helping save the life of a contractor who fell 26 feet after slipping off a ladder in the building that she had worked. She was passionate about her job, which included making sure the soldiers finances were in order and that their families were getting benefits. She wanted to be somewhere where she could help. Durkin loved life and her family. While home on leave, she made time for all her nieces and nephews and helped one of her sisters finish some home remolding projects. She talked about buying a home with her brother Pierce. Ciaras family and friends are always in our thoughts, especially today, as they remember their loved one. Well shit...this is rough. After the books success, I was contacted and asked by the The Global War On Terrorism History Project to be forwarded a very special opportunity. They are dedicated to educating the public about the American Service Member’s experiences during The Global War On Terrorism. They accomplish this by setting up a traveling display which contains uniforms, helmets, and other items, all of which have the history of the service member it used to belong to. Its going to be hard giving these items up and never seeing or feeling them again. But, its for a good cause. Brent and his team will tell our stories and use these items to paint pictures for future generations. I am sending them my Patrol Cap, a piece of shrapnel pulled from my vest on my first deployment and the same top I wore during the Battle for Blessing my second deployment. As soon as I opened the box...the smell of the blood, sweat and dirt thats still on the jacket spilled out and onto my face. Today marks 5 years in the Army!⁣ “The greatest achievement is to outperform yourself.”⁣ ⁣ It is easy to convince yourself that something isn’t worth your time or that it isn’t for you because it exposes your weaknesses. It is hard to seek out experiences that expose your weaknesses. It is even harder to follow through with the experiences in order to turn those weaknesses into strengths. ⁣ ⁣ For the last five years I have spent most of my time exposing myself and all of my weaknesses. Lance Corporal McDonald was serving with the Special Operations Task Group in Afghanistan when he was tragically killed in a helicopter crash on 30 August 2012 (local time Afghanistan). Lance Corporal McDonald is survived by his fiancée Rachael, his mother Myrna and stepfather Bernie, and brothers Percy, Roger and Gary. Thirty-year old Lance Corporal McDonald was born in Carnarvon, Western Australia in 1982. He joined the Army on 31 May 1999 and was posted to the 1st Battalion, The Royal Australian Regiment (1 RAR). On completion of his Selection and Training Course and Reinforcement Cycle, Lance Corporal McDonald was posted to the then 4th Battalion (Commando), The Royal Australian Regiment, now the 2nd Commando Regiment, in August 2008. Let’s take it back 4 years when I enlisted into the CT National Guard at Fort Bragg, NC while serving as a Squad Leader In THE 1st Battalion 504th Parachute Infantry Regiment of the 82nd Airborne Division. At the time I wasn’t sure what the Guard would bring but I quickly found a home within Butcher Company 1/102nd Infantry Regiment. September 2016 - I had the pleasure of being the medical technician for this stud. At the thought of not passing my test and prolonging his inpatient stay he was extremely anxious and sad. While prepping him he shared his life story with me. I cheered him on during his test and thankfully, he passed. Shortly after he was discharged. He urged me to come to the Veteran’s Day event the following weekend so that I could meet his wife. He greeted me with a huge hug and smiling face. He explained how thankful he was that I was his technician that day. The best way I celebrate Veteran’s Day is by serving other Vets.
