General Erwin Rommel with his Leica III camera, probably donated by Goebbels. General Rommel was an avid photographer. On June 5, 1940, near Condé-Folie, tanks of the 7th Panzer Division, commanded by Rommel, crossed the Somme River over a small bridge, under fire by French artillery. At around 7:30 am, one of the missiles hit the PzKpfw IV tank, number 321, thus blocking the passage. Erwin Rommel at that time watched the situation from the hill we see behind him. After taking a few photos, he ran down the embankment to help remove the wreckage of the tank. After several unsuccessful towing attempts, it was decided to push the tank onto a side road, thus clearing the main route of the crossing. Thats when the photo below was taken, showing the general in front of the 321 tank. During the First World War, commercial photographers took pictures of the Canadian Expeditionary Force units before they went overseas. Intended primarily as a visual record for the military, these images were also bought as mementoes by loved ones in Canada. The 2nd Divisional Cyclist Company, which drew men primarily from Toronto, Montreal, Kingston, Vancouver, Winnipeg and Halifax, arrived in France in September 1915. On the battlefield, the cyclists delivered messages or acted in a reconnaissance role. From the initial adoption of a rigid racial and physical selection of their members, it was spent in the last years of the Second World War to also recruit foreign volunteers of German ethnicity or however ideologically linked to National Socialism despite their origin. The Waffen-SS participated in almost all the battles of the Second World War; their soldiers gave proof of combativeness, efficiency and strong ideological motivation to the point that, on the one hand, they were guilty of brutal episodes of summary violence against civilians and prisoners of war and, on the other, often showed an excessive and reckless disdain for danger. . . . 🇮🇹Le Waffen-SS (SS Combattenti) erano una forza armata della Germania nazista nata nel marzo 1933 come braccio militare delle SS. Could France really beat Germany in ? The Saar offensive. In 1939, Germany invaded Poland which, according to legend, was abandoned by the British wanting peace at all cost and the French cowards. This is of course false, but there are also reasons why the French did not attack Germany in September 1939. First of all, it should be said that for the possible French attack which will take place in the Saar, only 9 divisions could be liberated, consequence of the total lack of preparation of the French army, both in mobilization and in equipment. When they crossed the German border on September 7, the French, after advancing a few kilometers, came across thousands of mines, bridges and cut trees and other traps. The losses are so important in the minefields that the French are sometimes forced to retreat. The French only fell on abandoned villages where everything important was destroyed and a few German soldiers who inflicted however 2000 losses on the French who only had time to approach the Siegfried line. In mid-September, faced with the weak advance of the units engaged and the situation in Poland, the French high command ordered its troops to fall back behind the Maginot line. We will now see why the French did not rush regardless of the losses towards the interior of Germany. First of all, you have to understand the French strategy. They come out traumatized by the 1st world war and base their strategies on defense, behind the Maginot line which absorbed a significant part of the national budget. It is simply impossible for the French to abandon the Maginot line. In addition, on the German side, the defenses are well organized. The Siegfried line, although less powerful than the Maginot line, is still impressive for the french. Further south, the Rhine river and the mountains of the thick black forest prevent any intrusion. The 22 German divisions of Army Group C under General Van Leeb guarding the French border would have had ample time to delay, with limited assistance from the Siegfried Line, the French offensive, Belgium and the Netherlands being still neutral to the time. During the Battle of France in 1940, the 8 tanks of this remaining model were grouped together in the 51st Battle Tank Battalion. June 12, 1940, while the battalion took the railroad to go to the front and after various adventures, the tanks including the Poitou were all scuttled on June 15, 1940 at 7 pm while the trains which transported them were stuck in a curve behind five other trains themselves blocked by a convoy of burning fuel at the entrance to the village of Meuse. A single tank whose firing of charges had not worked (the n ° 99 Champagne) was taken by the 10. Panzerregiment of the 8. Panzerdivision and sent to Germany in the region of Berlin. Le 27 janvier 1968, le sous marin la Minerve coule au large de Toulon avec 52 personnes à bord. ⚓ Chaque été, lorsque jallais à Toulon et quon était sur un bateau, je me disais quils étaient peut-être pas loin de nous... 🌊 Un sous marin qui disparaît, quon ne retrouve pas, cétait un mystère et ça me fascinait. Jai demandé aux libraires de la ville, si il y avait des documents sur cette histoire à lire, rien! Et en juillet 2019, je lisais les infos sur mon tél et je vois : La Minerve, brisée en trois morceaux repose bien au large de Toulon, par 2.370 m de fond. Lattente a du être insupportable pour les familles mais le plus triste cest quévidemment il ny aura ni corps, ni ossements retrouvés.
