If you haven’t stepped outside of your comfort zone, you may be missing out on some great opportunities in your life. This event changed my life and taught me what being mentally tough is all about, The Bataan Death March. 1. I only did it back in 2018 because I was in the field and some guys mentioned rucking this event in the heavy division (minimum 35 pounds) and I was like, “sure why not” with no train up for it whatsoever; terrible idea to not train at all for a marathon. 🤦♂️ 😂 2. We begin the ruck and as soon as the event starts these guys start casually walking and I let them know that at this pace and on this extremely difficult course with with all the sand and rucking up mountains/hills, we’re never gonna make it in under 12 hours for 26.2 miles so I dapped them up and started running/walking which is what we originally planned. 😂 3. I was in the top 26th out of 633 competitors and everything was smooth sailing for the 1st 19 miles and outta no where I straight up hit a wall going up hill. This is where I learned about being mentally tough because I had never been in a position like this before in my life. So many negative thoughts came in my head for the last 6 plus miles because now my ruck and boots just felt flat out heavy and were wearing me down. My physical abilities had always carried me along my fitness journey during everything I’ve done but not there at that moment. I ended up finishing 70th out of 633 competitors (only 521 finished) and my body was literally tore up for a week but I didn’t care because this event started a new chapter in my life, endurance training in combination with strength training. Don’t be afraid to step outside of your comfort zone! *** And no I wouldn’t recommend running a marathon with no train up lol. He created, trained and led his own militia (Coluna Infernal) with one objective: to kill communists. The training Roxo put his men through was utterly merciless. He would shoot at their feet unexpectedly in order to not flinch under fire. He forced them to jog, climb mountains and wade upstream through rivers for hours, all while wearing backpacks filled with heavy boulders. Accidentally making a noise during practice ambushes was punished by a vicious beatdown. As a result, Roxo’s men could move in complete silence, cover huge distances and still have enough energy to immediately attack the enemy upon arrival. Roxo firmly believed in fighting fire with fire, prisoners were rarely taken and he always reminded his men If you see anyone taking me prisoner, shoot me. He had a $100,000 bounty on his head and only lost 3 men under his command. The Coluna Infernal would don rags or enemy uniforms and stealthily join the victims of communist mass abductions, only to later slaughter the unsuspecting terrorists in their own camps. The man himself did not miss a single chance to participate— 15 were personally killed by Roxo during one attack. His soldiers’ kill-count exceeded that of all Portuguese regiments stationed in Mozambique at the time. In 1976, during a patrol near the Okavango river, his Wolf (APC) hit a landmine and was tipped over, crushing Roxo beneath it. The rest of the crew tried to lift it free, but it was too heavy. Roxo simply lit a cigarette and smoked it until he died. Not a single moan or complaint. Side note: During one of his hunting trips in the wilderness, he was attacked by a leopard. Keitel was born in a village near Gandershiem, Germany on 22 September 1882, he was the eldest son of Father Carl Keitel (1854–1934) who owned a large estate. After his education instead of taking over his fathers estate he joined the Army in 1901 becoming an officer cadet in the Prussian Army and married in 1909. . Keitel served on the Western Front During World War One and fought in Flanders. He became a captain after being wounded couple of times. After the war he stayed in the army. . He rose through the ranks in the 1920s and even became Minister Of War in 1929. In 1933 was promoted to command a division In 1938 Keitel became head of the Wehrmacht. . The other Generals disliked Keitel for being a yes man of Hitler for instance Field Marshal Paul Ludwig Ewald von Kleist describes him as a stupid follower of Hitler and was often mocked. Keitel was described as being easily manipulated and nervous personality. One Officer asked Keitel who he was. Upon finding out he became horrified at his own failure to salute his Superior as he was head of the army. However General Franz Halder said Dont Worry its only Keitel he was generally ignored and Officer bypassed him to salute other superiors. . In 1945 Following Hitlers Death. Karl Donitz became Fuhrer of Germany. Albert Speer reported to have Described Keitel being the yes man of Donitz as he was to Hitler. Keitel signed the second signing of Surrender to the Soviets on 8th May 1945. . Keitel signed and issued orders for example to Kill Soviet Prisoner of War or to kil Jews whether combatment or not. Keitel supported harsh occupation of nations such as In France. Due to this he was senteced Guilty in the Courts on evidence of his signings. He was hanged in Nuremburg Prison in 1946. His last words were call on God Almighty to have mercy on the German people. Today we introduce CSULB’s Military Science Instructor, Sergeant First Class Bradley Tollberg. • SFC Tollberg’s hometown is North Branch, Minnesota and he decided to join the Army straight out of high school. His primary reason for enlisting at the age of 18 was to obtain a greater sense of purpose and direction. He now hopes to continue his education and obtain his Bachelors in Sports and Health Science while balancing being a good husband and father. • Since enlisting as a teen, he has deployed to Germany and twice to Iraq. However, his favorite assignment from his 14 years in the Army was being a Drill Sergeant at Fort Jackson, South Carolina. He considers this assignment to be his most enriching experience as he helped mold ordinary civilians into soldiers. • As for his current assignment, he plans to aid CSULB’s ROTC program in building future leaders by incorporating his own enlistment experience. He also looks forward to teaching and getting to know his students. His word of advice for future commissioned officers is to never limit your academic or physical performance to what you think you can do. • When he is not on duty, he is either traveling, exercising or spending time with his family. August 26th 2012 I get tasked to have my platoon go into a village that hadn’t seen NATO forces for a very long time. The intel that I gathered led me to discover that the village was being used as an enemy stronghold and they roamed freely during the day. I’m not going to get into the politics of war in this post, but I’ll just say that my recommendation was disregarded... Fast forward we’re on the ground and things immediately kick off on a bad note; aerial surveillance identified a spotter in the village...We continue to push forward and reach our dismount point. Switching to travel on foot, we push into the village where I encounter the next unusual occurrence, a group of children who would not come to me when I offered them some of the snacks that I always carried on patrol. Instead, the group of children waived for me to come to them, I ignore their gestures. We continue moving forward and then, as if things couldn’t get worse, we get a call that our surveillance is going down due to bad weather. A very eery feeling comes over everyone as we knew this significantly increased the chance of us being ambushed. I reach the entrance of the village with the lead element and we come across a Y-Junction where an odd situation begins to rapidly unfold. At the left fork we noticed a large group of people being ushered away from us and at the right fork was a small gathering of people waving for me to come over to them. I direct a group of my men to set up a machine gun team to cover down the right fork while I take a team to investigate the fleeing mass of people. I took off with my team fully expecting to get into a firefight...I was wrong, instead an enemy Soldier was hiding behind a wall amongst the people at the right fork; amongst the same people who had just waved me over to them several minutes before. This enemy Soldier popped out from behind the wall and let off a long spray of bullets from his AK-47. In 2011 The Columbus Museum contracted Savannah-based photographer Ellen Susan to take likenesses of several soldiers from nearby Fort Benning, using nineteenth-century techniques. The artist had previously created similar portraits of service members from Fort Stewart and Hunter Army Airfield in southeastern Georgia. About this haunting overarching group of images, the artist explained: I felt that the 150-year old collodion process could be a meaningful way to photograph contemporary soldiers, to provide a counterpoint to the anonymous representations of soldiers seen in newspapers and on television. The necessarily long exposures of this slow process often result in an intensity of gaze that asks the viewer to look longer, and the grainless, highly detailed surface brings out minute details of each individual.
