There is a war happening everyday in Skid Row and it’s happening between the street residents and the ever growing rat infestation. I nearly fell over backwards when Chelsea pulled this gun out of her duffel bag: “Wanna see what I just got?” She said, “I just bought this so I can shoot rats.” Turns out it’s just a very intimidating pellet gun and for Chelsea it’s an extra line of defense for the rodents that get into her tent. For the many who make their homes on the sidewalks of Skid Row rats are a huge problem. They get into tents and steal your food and their feces can be found everywhere they travel. In 2018, reports of street residents getting typhoid fever and typhus began to emerge and the numbers are still on the rise. Typhus doesn’t come directly from the rats but rather the fleas they carry and in the summer months the flea population runs rampant. The rats are just one more health threat our unhoused community has to deal with on a daily basis. #skidrowlosangeles #skidrowla #skidrow #losangeles #dtla #downtownla #streetlife #streetphotography #suitcasejoe - @suitcase_joe on Instagram

Few producers inspire or are as esteemed as the grande dame of Burgundy, Madame Lalou Bize-Leroy. Described as a trailblazer, intuitive, and passionate, her love of the vines and understanding of the Burgundy terroir make her one of the most respected individuals of the region. . Her great-grandfather, François Leroy, founded Maison Leroy in 1868. He was a winemaker and owner of vines in Auxey-Duresses (where he lived), Meursault, Pommard, Chambertin, Musigny, Clos Vougeot, and Richebourg. Initially, he sold his wines through Comptoir des Propriétaires de la Côte d’Or, in Beaune. Her father, Henri Leroy, joined the family business in 1919. A friend of Edmond Gaudin de Villaine in 1942, he became half owner of Domaine Romanée-Conti which is still held by the Leroy family today. . In 1955, Madame Leroy entered the family business. Her father is credited with having begun building the reserves of the cellar in 1919. With his focus on Domaine Romanée-Conti, the wines collected are storied in their elegance and poignancy. She tastes through the range once a year to decide what is ready for release. It is a collection of mature bottles which captivates their audience. She has no contracts with growers. She buys the wines if she likes it and will pass on wine if she does not. From collectors to wine writers, the wines of Maison Leroy are epic. . . . . . #maisonLeroy #laloubizeleroy - @martineswines on Instagram

Zarina Hashmi Born in Aligarh, India on 1937, Zarina Hashmi who goes by her first name is an Indian-born, American artist whose work spans from minimal drawing to printmaking and sculpture which more or less evokes and explores the idea of home, distances, trajectories influenced by her extensive travels. Zarina received a degree in Mathematics and is fascinated by architecture which reflects in her use of geometry and structural purity on her works. Having an identity of an Indian woman born as a Muslim, she uses visual elements from Islamic religious decorations, especially the regular geometry commonly found in Islamic architecture. She has been one of the very few women amongst the Indian artists of her time to include M.F. Husain, V.S. Gaitonde, Tyeb Mehta and Nasreen Mohamedi. Her artistic practice expanded after marriage and departure from Aligarh in 1958 during sojourns abroad when she lived in Bangkok, Paris, and Bonn with her husband, a diplomat in the Indian Foreign Service. While living in Paris in the mid-1960s, Zarina studied with Stanley William Hayter at Atelier 17 and was one of the many Indian artists living and working there at the time. Upon her return to India in 1968, Zarina moved to Jaguar and lived there, alone, for six years. She left Delhi for Tokyo in 1974 where she worked with Toshi Yoshido at his studio and immigrated to the United States the following year. Zarina built out her loft, a community of friends and was part of the city’s burgeoning feminist art movement. She supported herself by teaching at universities across the country then traveled back home to India, fought eviction from her apartment, had exhibitions in India, Pakistan, and New York, and continued visiting her family in Pakistan after they moved in 1959, the new country that they, but not she, would call home. Zarina’s relationship to her homeland and newly adopted country mirrored the fraught relationship both have had with their Muslim minorities. #Aligarh #India #ZarinaHashmi #minimaldrawing #printmaking #sculpture #moreorless #evokes #explores #feminist #art #movement - @artstoryindia on Instagram

Jailed civil rights lawyer Nasrin Sotoudeh has been hospitalized with a dangerous heart condition, according to BBC Persian. Meanwhile, Iranian state forces are blocking anyone from seeing her while insisting that her family pay the hospital bills. Sotoudeh, who has been imprisoned in Tehran on trumped-up charges since 2018, has been denying food for 40 days to demand freedom for all political prisoners in Iran. Learn more about her case on our website. With tremendous sadness, we share news of the passing of Jane Walentas, the Sharpe-Walentas Studio Programs executive director.⠀ ⠀ We will miss Jane’s extraordinary leadership, marked by her generosity, enthusiasm, and dedication to fellow artists.⠀ ⠀ In 2014, Jane and the Walentas Family Foundation became stewards of the Studio Program, determined to continue its mission of supporting working artists.⠀ ⠀ An accomplished artist herself, Jane received her BFA from Moore College of Art & Design and MFA from NYU. She is perhaps best known for the carousel that bears her name in Brooklyn Bridge Park, which she restored by hand over 27 years in her own DUMBO studio.⠀ ⠀ We are lucky to have known Jane and borne witness to her uncompromising commitment to the arts. Her legacy will live on with the hundreds of artists who have worked in our studios and all those to come.⠀ ⠀ We extend our deepest sympathy to the Walentas family as we mourn the loss of our brilliant friend.⠀ ⠀ Image descriptions: 1) Jane and David Walentas at their home in DUMBO, Brooklyn. 2) Jane and David with SWSP artists in 2015. 3) Jane working in her studio in 1986. 4) Jane with her favorite carousel horse. - @swstudioprogram on Instagram
