This past September I had the pleasure of spending a week in the wilderness with some good friends and family. For the past handful of springs I’ve been entering a bunch of banked slalom events all over Colorado. The atmosphere of these “competitions” is one of my favorite parts about snowboarding culture. It’s a gathering of passionate people coming together to challenge themselves and have some fun—together. “When you compete against everyone else, no one wants to help you. But when you compete against yourself, everyone wants to help you.”-Simon Sinek. I think this perfectly illustrates the ethos around this community. Energy is high, lots of laughs, side bets, jokes, heckling, high fives, hoots and hollering. In the end it doesn’t hurt to end up third right behind some amazing people as well 😉. A year ago, this week, I was in my final days of rehearsal and going into tech for “An American in Paris” @westchesterbroadwaytheatre — learning this show in 10 days was one of the hardest things I had to do, plus, I was subletting trying to find an apartment to sign a lease with @luketherose and @tylermiclean ... to say I was stressed is an understatement. I don’t recommend being in rehearsal and moving at the same time. It’s very stressful. LOL. But God worked a miracle. We ended up finding a place, and I went into tech. This show was very special to me. It was the first show I booked since moving to NY back in 2019, it marked my NY debut, I met so many amazing friends, not to mention this entire cast was a dream come true. Just the most supportive and loving people. I miss them. During our run of “ An American in Paris” was when I first heard the words “coronavirus.” It was a whisper of discussion. Little did I know, it would change the course of the new year in 2020. Little did I know that the whole country would be quarantined. Little did I know that I would be back in California for 3 months. Little did I know that New York City would look and feel very different. Little did I know that Paris would be my last show for a while because theatre would go dark for an undetermined amount of time. I really hope theatre comes back soon. I hope all of the performing arts come back soon. I miss going to see theatre. I miss going to the movies. I miss singing in church. 12 years ago today, I spoke my last words with my dad. We spoke at midnight. He was in the hospital for 6 days having tests ran on him bc he wasn’t feeling right and was getting tired easily. He called me to wish me a happy birthday and ask me how football practice was. I was a sophomore competing for a starting position at Bishop Ahr HS which at the time was Top 10 team in the state. I said to him on the phone that I didn’t think I was going to start because I was competing with 3 senior linebackers and 3 D1 WR’s in front of me. My dad got pissed and said immediately “Jake, get that thought of your head. Believe in yourself. No one one outworks you. you’re the best athlete on any field you step on. No one is better then you. Get that in your head. It’s a winning mentality.” That next morning he passed away completely unexpectedly on the morning of my 16th birthday. Little did I know that convo I had with him the night prior was the last convo I’d ever have with my father and at the same time it was the greatest advice I have ever and will ever hear again. That year I became the starting linebacker and starting WR for one of the best teams in the state. My dad taught me the greatest thing in life is to work hard and believe you’re the best at what you do. Life is short. Be a good person, work hard and do the right thing. Just like my father. Competition has always been a reflective process, and while this year was probably the most difficult it’s ever been for me in terms of finding strength and my voice, it started and finished with amazement and gratitude for what I’m fortunate to have. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ I’ve been lucky enough to work with @haciendalapapayaec for the third year in a row, to share some of the most amazing coffees I’ve ever experienced and the work of a team devoted to excellence and refusing to settle for less. On this end, I also have a team in @dunecoffee comprised of coworkers and coaches, but most importantly, friends, who are all selfless to a fault and believe in each other. Today were sharing some of our fantastic #UHIGrad stories, including Rachael Cross, who graduates with an honours degree in Geography 🥳👏 Rachael is now studying a Masters in Environment and Development at the University of Edinburgh with a view to pursuing a career in environmental consultancy. “My degree has confirmed the field of work I want to go down and given me a wide range of knowledge and skills for my future career, she said. “Geography was always one of my favourite subjects at school, so I knew I wanted to study it at university. We covered a wide range of topics and the small numbers within class made this a really friendly and positive experience. There was lots of group involvement and interaction between tutors and classmates, which I really enjoyed. The support from tutors was really good, and they always went out of their way to help.” She worked with MOO Food, a local food charity, as part of her work experience placement. I know it’s been a while since my last update, but progress has been slow recently. After taking a few days off for some much needed rest, @manda.237 came to visit in Shenandoah and made this week the best week on the trail! She got the entire AT experience in one week, blinding fog, pouring rain, hitchhiking, beautiful views along the Shenandoah ridge line, and a bear encounter! She even pushed herself to hike a 22 mile day! Trail running and launching a startup are two things that I love. They both are quite an adventure with peaks and valleys. I think I’ve fallen in love with the journey and while the destination is a goal, the path is what makes me feel alive. While it was quite beautiful passing through Kendall Katwalk, I didn’t stop then, I kept going, with each turn, led to another mile, and the beauty of the PCT just kept unfolding. Preparation for the Adventure I will say that my planning and preparation for these adventures is teaching me to mitigate risk as best I can and always have a Plan B. In startups the types of risks that I think about are market, financial, people/team, and legal risks. On trail, it’s about wayfinding, nutrition, water filtering, training, my Garmin inReach (safety). Plan B is knowing that your Plan A probably isn’t going to go exactly as planned. The Mountain will Humble You The mountain doesn’t care what the results of your last race are. It doesn’t care what University you went to or how successful you were in your corporate career or how much money you have. Its an equalizer and you will find out what you’re made of at your core. Startups are kind of similar, better leave your ego at the door, because that big corporate title doesn’t mean anything, you no longer have the clout of the Fortune 100 Company to attach to your name. It’s just you and the little resources you’ve got. It’s also an equalizer. So if you’re into power, wealth, status, don’t come near the mountain or startups, you’re just going to find a lot of miles that want to break all that. Membership dues have been decreased to $25 single, $40 family and 10 bucks to out of region riders. The email notifying you that membership renewal are due may have old prices in it. Were doing our best to come up with a season kickoff event on October 24th at LTS snowpark that stays compliant to Covid19 regulations and is fun for everyone. More details to follow 3. The club has purchased an Ortovox beacon station with 6 stations to better aid our area and riders in practicing Avalanche burial scenarios. На мой взгляд, это лучшее место, для знакомства с горами. Простой, приятный маршрут, отлично читаемая тропа, даже в темное время суток. Более того, на протяжении всего подъема и спуска дорогу вам будут подсказывать метки ( расположенные на деревьях ) красные/белые. Гора доступна даже для людей без личного транспорта. Всего за пару часов, с небольшим ) можно добраться из Владивостока, на электричке ( ст. Анисимовка ) далее 6км по грунтовой дороге до горнолыжной базы «Грибановка» и финальные 3 км до вершины. Фалаза имеет две вершины, с обоих открываются отличные виды, главное выбрать хорошую погоду. Today is Father’s Day and a challenging first for us. We celebrated our dad as best as we could, getting in all the things he would’ve done on his perfect day; ✅ Worked in the workshop and built part of a deck ✅ Fished from the end of the dock ✅ Made a trip to Fleet Farm ✅ Made a trip to Menards for some tools ✅ Took a beautiful boat ride ✅ Went to his favorite restaurant on the bay ✅ Ordered and ate Walleye ✅ Drove by the Maritime Museum and the Tower he was helping to build ✅ Finished the day by stopping at our childhood ice cream stop that we all used to stop at It was a tough but great celebration of him. So today is #lesbianvisibilityday . I was looking back through old photos thanks to Mom and Dad being bored during Covid and deciding to digitize old photos. As I look back at my younger self, I’m filled with many thoughts and feelings as I’m sure most people are. I post these three on visibility day because I think it’s easy to see I’ve always been me. There have been times where being me meant I felt ashamed for the way I expressed my gender and how I experienced my sexuality. I felt like I had to change/stifle/hide to be able to be loved. Visibility days are to remind our circles that we exist and to give representation. The reason for that is the reality that there are groups that are more at risk for anxiety, depression and suicide especially when they don’t feel seen. I post this to say I am here and I’ve always been here. I’m finally fully at home in my own skin and confident in who I am. I get excited to get dressed every morning for myself and to feel good about how I look because I’m no longer dressing to fit how others believe I should be dressing. I’m cutting my hair not to fit a stereotype but because I like the way I look. I post this because visibility matters and I am so thankful to be out of the shadows and the darkness that lives there. My role is to be visible, your role is to see and to accept that I exist, to acknowledge that we may have had similar life experiences and also vastly different experiences. We navigate the world differently and the only way to begin to understand is to listen to stories and acknowledge their validity. So today for #lesbianvisibilityday , enjoy the fact that my go-to hat is still Cleveland Indians (sorry @alifeuls for the misuse of indigenous peoples as a mascot) and that even my younger self was rocking flannel like a good PNW resident. Along with that a reminder to have grace on your former self. We are constantly growing and there are times I wish I could go back and give my younger self more courage and confidence.
