If you are or ever have suffered from anxiety, you are probably familiar with the many ways people have responded to your pain. While people are typically really well intentioned, their comments can be insensitive, unhelpful, and at times plain hurtful. One of the things I learned in the midst of my struggle was that I needed to share my feelings with those who were close to me and who were trustworthy. This took time. Read that again. Being vulnerable did not happen overnight. But once I shared, I found that I was met with overwhelming support, and that support benefitted my healing process immensely. How can you know if it’s anxiety or if it’s intuition?⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ .⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Anxiety: combo of fear, worry, and the actual feeling state of anxiety. It can be worry which is future oriented thoughts resistant to uncertainty and ambiguity. It can be fear, actual fear of imminent threat. It can be the feeling state of anxiety which is physiological arousal like difficulty breathing or sensations of tightness.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ .⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Intuition: It’s a deep sense. A knowing. Impressions. Clarity. 6th sense. Even when related to fear or warning, intuition is more calm and grounded. It’s resolve. It’s in your gut. It’s typically relieving instead of panic inducing.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ .⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ How do I know this? I don’t. It’s a hypothesis like every single thing I say. I’m not my ideas, but I have ideas. This one is from my intuition, job experience, and personal lived experience. Most of my counseling hacks are simply my observations of patterns mixed with my personal anxiety and intuition. Some examples of this: walking or sitting in nature and noticing how many sights, sounds, smells, and colors you can note; exercising; doing art; gardening/weeding; listening to or reading a book that is NOT on the subject causing anxiety; meditating; praying; journaling; dancing; jumping on a trampoline (you all know I love me some trampolining!).⠀ . ⠀ You will notice that these activities give the thinking mind a breather. They remind the mind that it doesn’t have to be solely responsible for solving or getting rid of your anxiety and fear. Perceived danger Actually immediate danger Etc. . & these causes, cause the human body to naturally response with anxiety. =stress hormones circulating the body. =mind scanning/focused for any more danger/anything that you perceive to be a problem . THEN You can add to that fear believing that your symptom is something WORSE! . GUESS What? This adds to the response, feels worse, can become an anxiety circle. I.e now scared of these feelings*normal. . WHAT HELPS REDUCE ANXIETY👇 Understanding that this is a human response & the stress hormones such as adrenaline & cortisol, can effect every part of the body & be different for all. . Its not easy when experiencing anxiety to be ok with the thought that this BIG feeling is just anxiety. So test it . 🌱Ask a doc for a check up . 🌱If it passes in between 10 mins & 30 mins. Its probubly anxiety response from a cause such as the above. . 🌱If you notice that when you think about anxiety you feel worse, its the thoughts that are causing you anxiety. The FEAR of it=keep talking kindly to yourself, that this will pass . 🌱if you notice that a small feeling in your body is frightening you & then you feel worse.its the fear again. Remember get a little check up to clear up your worries. . 🌱if when you find you have something coming up, a trip, speaking infront of people, something thats challenging you &you at worrying about that or that youll feel anxious. Its the FEAR again. Speak to yourself. This is a feeling it wont stay forever it will pass. 🔥Brain Train Tuesday🔥- Crush your anxiety FAST with Belly Box Breathing Before you get started, make sure that you’re seated upright in a comfortable chair with your feet flat on the floor. Try to be in a stress-free, quiet environment where you can focus on your breathing. Keeping your hands relaxed in your lap with your palms facing up, focus on your posture. You should be sitting up straight. This will help you take deep breaths. Step 1: Slowly exhale Sitting upright, slowly exhale through your mouth, getting all the oxygen out of your lungs. Focus on this intention and be conscious of what you’re doing. Step 2: Slowly inhale Inhale slowly and deeply through your nose to the count of four. In this step, count to four very slowly in your head.try Feel the air fill your lungs, one section at a time, until your lungs are completely full and the air moves into your abdomen. Step 3: Hold your breath Hold your breath for another slow count of four. Step 4: Exhale again Exhale through your mouth for the same slow count of four, expelling the air from your lungs and abdomen. Be conscious of the feeling of the air leaving your lungs. Step 5: Hold your breath again Hold your breath for the same slow count of four before repeating this process. Everyone has anxiety at sometime or another. Theres everyday anxiety which is a natural response to stressors in your life. Theres *anxiety* which is this layer of wrongness that likes to blanket you and follow you around while you worry over everything and nothing. Then theres ANXIETY - which makes you feel like you cant properly breathe and the world is about to end at any moment. Here are some tips that might help with the first two. (As always - everyones mental health is different and Im only writing from my own experiences, what works for me might not work for you and thats okay!) Three ways to help someone with anxiety (a THREAD) : 1) Educate yourself about what can help anxiety : If you know the specific type of anxiety your friend has, you can utilize some of the online anxiety help resources for that particular issue. 2) Destigmatize and normalise their anxiety : Communicate that you dont see their anxiety as a weakness, character flaw, or a sign of them being incompetent in their life, work, or other roles (such as being a parent or friend). 3) Offer your support but dont take over : Sometimes loved ones are so gripped by an anxiety disorder that they’re in pure survival mode and need more hands-on help to get things done. In less extreme circumstances, however, it’s best to offer support without taking over or overdoing the reassurance. Here we go again... 🤯 These are just some of the worries that have been whizzing around my mind after watching the Government announcements yesterday. I’ve made no secret of the fact I struggle with anxiety & although I’m feeling much better than a few months ago, this ‘second wave’ will certainly challenge that. I think it’s so crucial we talk about our mental health. Whilst it’s great to want to remain positive & ‘just get through this’ it’s also important to admit if you’re not OK. I am 𝐧𝐨𝐭 an expert on this by any stretch, but some of the things I can recommend to help with anxious thought patterns are: 🔹 Write worries down, even overnight, to try to avoid them taking over your brain 🔹 Discuss how you’re feeling with a loved one 🔹 Exercise regularly - a mixture of HIIT & yoga works best for me 🔹 Be conscious of your diet & alcohol consumption and how this affects how you’re feeling 🔹 Practice mindfulness or meditation, learn about breathing techniques - the @calm app is great for this 🔹 Schedule time every week to do something nice for YOU. Doesn’t have to be big - mine is a bubble bath & face mask 🔹 Take a break from social media & screens, including news sites if the news contributes to your anxiety 🔹 If you feel that your anxiety or worries are getting to the point you can’t cope, always seek professional help. The word “anxiety” is banded around a lot and unfortunately misused in a lot of cases. There’s a distinct difference between the two. ⠀ I often use the analogy of a 𝒔𝒕𝒓𝒆𝒔𝒔 𝒋𝒖𝒈 to signify the origins of anxiety. When stress gets too much, the anxious response kicks in because the brain gets confused - it thinks we are in danger and doesn’t understand why we have so much stress. THE SOLUTION TO MANY THINGS IS THE OPPOSITE OF OUR FIRST, NATURAL REACTION. When we are triggered into anxiety, the human reflexive reaction is to ramp up our fear and vigilance. Like frightened animals, we look around - whiskers twitching - looking for the impending doom. The thing is: for most of us, all of the predators are in our own minds and projections. Shit! What now?? Not to fear - there is a surefire way to extinguish the fire that anxiety ignites. We must stay, instead of run. YOU ARE NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR YOUR FIRST REACTION TO ANYTHING IN LIFE. Your first reaction is a reflex. You can’t help it. But you are responsible for your second one. Let the anxiety get your attention. Feel the rush of fear (you can’t help this) and then... then... allow it. Welcome it. Ask it to sit with you. Let it flow over and through you. Know that anxiety and excitement are experienced exactly the same physically in the human body. What if you could be excited right now instead of anxious? Just play with it. Feel it out. Laugh out loud. This isn’t all so serious... if we don’t cling so tightly to it being so. We can’t live without anxiety - it’s the first indication from our brains that we need to stay awake, and aware of potential danger. But when we shift our perspective on this loving reflex, we can change our nervous system’s reaction and therefore change our lives. This is so important. I do it for myself all the time. Anxiety Attack vs. Panic Attack ⬇️ A panic attack is an intense and sudden feeling of fear, terror, or discomfort accompanied by several other mental and physical symptoms. The symptoms of panic attacks are often so extreme that they cause severe disruption. According to the DSM-5, a panic attack is characterized by four or more of the following symptoms: Feelings of unreality (derealization), Feeling detached from oneself (depersonalization), Fear of losing control or going crazy, Fear of dying (mental symptoms) and Heart palpitations, pounding heart, or accelerated heart rate, Excessive sweating, Trembling or shaking, Sensations of shortness of breath, difficulty breathing, Feeling of choking, Chest pain, Nausea or abdominal distress, Feeling dizzy, unsteady, lightheaded, or faint, Numbness or tingling sensations (paresthesias), Chills, Hot flashes (physical symptoms).
