😳I wasn’t always a happy person. Or positive. In fact, I pretty much used to be an Eeyore. 🛑 You know when it stopped? ⭐️ When I decided I was sick and tired of my life and I was ready to do whatever it takes to change it. 💥I started eating better and working out and lost weight and gained the confidence to leave a bad relationship. 💥I started setting goals and ran my first half marathon and gained even more confidence. 💥I decided I was sick and tired of being broke and I changed that. Worked more, sold everything I could, changed behaviors, practiced gratitude, read up and studied personal finance and changed my financial life and future forever. Each event spurred a new one and a new habit and a new level of happiness. I’m not even close to who I was 10 years ago. I can’t even believe it myself most days. I get to live this life, do what I love, help others, make changes and choose my direction and happiness every single day. If you’re not happy, change it. Pick just one attainable thing on this list and get started. Make it a habit and other habits will come! 👉🏼What about you? Do you fear carbs, especially after 6? Its one of those things that is said so often it becomes fact. But repetition doesnt make it true. Lets look closer...⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Trying to cut back or avoid carbs during the day can drive up cravings for sugary foods in the evening. Do we dig deep to avoid pasta with dinner but struggle to stay out of the kitchen in an evening picking frenzy?⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ If we havent met our fuel need in a day, our body will give us signals to get this fuel in. Your cells dont particularly care if this fuel comes from quinoa or jelly babies but of course one carries more health benefits than the other.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Some studies have shown our sensitivity to insulin is lower in the evenings but this does not mean we should therefore avoid carb. Whats key is to regulate our fuel intake with what our body needs and in truth we probably need less carb for Netflix than we do for a morning school run, followed by work, followed by chaos, followed by... you get the gist.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ So balancing your carbs brings you benefits both in terms of productivity and hunger management - you may need slightly less of them in the eve depending on what your afternoon was like but they certainly dont need to be avoided. Why “if it’s not a hell yes, it’s a no” doesn’t always work, try this instead: I hear so many coaches spouting this advice, and I used to subscribe to it too, but I have a problem with it. It’s oversimplified and isn’t helpful in many scenarios. Don’t get me wrong, I am the first to advocate for you to say no when something doesn’t feel right or aligned with your inner knowing. Or to support you to say no when you don’t feel you have the time, energy or capacity to deliver on an ask without feeling resentful, tired, or run down. But what about when you do have the capacity, but it’s still not a “hell yes”: Do you say yes or no? For example, a friend asks me to help them move. Definitely not a “hell yes”, but also not a no, and maybe not a yes either. The only way for me to decide would be to check in with myself as to whether I have the capacity to help – do my schedule, energy levels, and health allow? Here’s my process: ⚡️When someone asks me to do something with or for them, I notice my initial gut reaction. Do I feel excited or do I feel unsure or do I feel a sense of dread? Often, but not always, I get a clear, impulsive yes or no and just take note of it. 🦥Next I buy myself some time to really feel into it by saying something like: “Can I get back to you tomorrow/later?” The linear tendency to get things on the calendar, have a plan, and resolve things quickly can prevent many people from being in this limbo state, but the in between (some could call this procrastination) can be helpful for determining what the most self and other-honoring thing to do is. 🦦Over the next 24 hours, I allow myself to float through different scenarios and considerations around the ask, feel into what my body is telling me, and look at my calendar to decide if I actually have the time to help/do what is being asked of me. Of course, not all decisions require or can afford 24 hours, so I adapt as needed. So yes, it is important to acknowledge what is a bodily, intuitive yes versus a no and to be self-honoring AND to give ourselves some space to take into account other factors before impulsively saying yes or no to requests of our time/energy.
