I am in such disbelief today. One of the most amazing people I ever knew passed away last night. My Grandpa. Back in July, I chose to go home to Ohio for a week and saw much of my family, including my Grandpa. I had no idea that was the last time I would see him. You left too soon, Grandpa. You were a role model for me and so many others. And you always told me that in life “it’s not what you know, but who you know.” You were a social butterfly and I was always impressed by how easily you could strike up a conversation and make friends with anyone. I will always remember our trips to get ice cream, going to the zoo, the museum. You came to all my plays and film screenings. You were so supportive. And when we were little and misbehaved, you would joke and say you would “send us to the moon.” Your legacy and lessons will live on through your kids, your grandkids, and beyond. Four years married today, first year celebrating with a baby and a pandemic. Oliver broke my lip last night, we are in another teething stage. Post-partum hair loss is triggering, when the baby pulls my hair it now comes out in chunks. He doesn’t know what that does to me, neither does Logan. Where will I put my strength today? To celebrate four years I made Marc Bittman’s scones that came out repulsively chewy. One of the comments in the New York Times article says you have to be a monkey to mess this recipe up, so easy! I tell myself that person doesn’t have a teething, screaming, head-banging 6 month old. It helps. So yea they came out like shit. Still, the shit scones were baked, sitting on the table, waiting. Today I put my strength in many places; Refusing to feel defeated by my broken lip, ignoring the chunks of my hair sitting in our bathroom trash, and accepting that it’s just unclear whether or not I’ve brushed my teeth this morning. And then, collectively, we put our strength in eating the shit scones that were staring us in the face, Logan going as far as telling me he’ll have another. This is certainly one the hardest things I’ll have to live with. My father meant so much to me and so many others. From coming to terms with my sexuality, to pushing me to pursue my dreams in fashion, my dad always had my back, and that meant the world to me. I’m so grateful for the many memories I have with him. Some of which included taking me to my first Lady Gaga show, shopping with me on every vacation, and being the best personal trainer! He was someone I will forever look up to as a mentor, father, and husband to my mom. From day one he honored everything my brothers and I wanted to do with our lives. We were all so different and he valued that beyond words. He was the happiest when he knew we were all doing what we loved and I will forever hold onto that. On one of our first dates I asked James if he wanted kids. His response was “I was meant to be a Dad.” After seeing him in action this past month, I’ve never heard a more true statement. He’s the ultimate co-parent, Dad & best friend. . He woke up for every feeding with me, changed the majority of diapers, became the swaddle pro, cleaned bottles, did laundry, cleaned the house, let me nap as much as I wanted, loved on our little girl every moment he could & held me as a cried every night the first two weeks. He’s supported me beyond words during my postpartum recovery & made sure I had time to myself to reenergize during the tough days. . Today is his first day back at work & we will miss him endlessly but the memories from this past month of us all together will be some of the best, & hardest. I didn’t think there was a day where my dad couldn’t put a smile on my face, whenever I was down he would always lift me up somehow, I strive to be like my dad and hope when the day comes to get married and have kids, I raise my kids how he did or at least try too. I’m gonna miss you coming to my soccer games and telling me to shoot the ball and stop dribbling, I’m gonna miss the dad advices and talks everyday and someone who is always on my back to make sure I’m not straying off in the wrong direction. I’m gonna miss hearing your voice and seeing your face. My dad has been battling lung cancer for a year now, and he was still the happiest guy on earth and never was mad or angry, still full of jokes and made everyone around him feel at ease. My dad was also the dance king and I hope I can match his energy one day because I’m like him in a lot of ways. There is so much more but it would be too much to say. I know that god has a very special man up there with him, so please take care of him. Dad one day I will see you again and keep next to me because I want you to see the life I’m gunna live and the family I will be around. I hope to be the man you were. I’ve never known a joy like this. What an interesting journey it has been to find and create my tribe. The depth of my joy now would not be anywhere what it is without all of the heartbreaks, trials, and tribulations along the way.
